K9 Loses Week-long Battle

Earlier this week, we told you about how two dogs gave blood to help save the life of a Boise, Idaho, police dog who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest during a manhunt on Nov. 11. After surgery to remove a lung, K9 Jardo was recovering well and seemed comfortable at home. But on Wednesday night, things took a tragic turn. Jardo was rushed back to WestVet Emergency Center when his handler noticed he was acting strangely. The 6-year-old Belgian Malinois died after going into cardiac arrest. “Jardo served our community and though we were blessed with these few extra days to share with him, he ultimately gave his life in the protection of fellow officers,” said Boise Police Chief William Bones, according to a Facebook post on Thursday. The department thanked the community for the hundreds of cards and letters that have poured in for Jardo, and said a memorial is planned for next week. — Read it at Idaho’s KTVB

Feds: Barrier Around Harambe Failed to Meet Standards

A federal inspection of the barrier at the enclosure around the gorilla habitat at the Cincinnati Zoo found that it was not in compliance with standards when a 3-year-old boy fell into the exhibit on May 28. Only a month before the incident, however, the barrier system was found to be compliant in a U.S.D.A. inspection, the zoo said Thursday. Harambe, an endangered 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was shot and killed in the incident to save the little boy. — Read it at NBC News

Excited Dog Reunited With Owner

Five months after he disappeared, Tucker the Collie was back in the arms of his owner, wiggling with excitement, wagging his tail and giving lots of kisses. When the Central Nebraska Humane Society found Tucker, one of his front legs was caught in his collar. Tucker sometimes has seizures, and it’s believed his leg was likely caught there during an episode. “What's even better than seeing the video of the reunion is being on the receiving end of those kisses!” said one of his owners, Lisa Widga, in a Facebook comment. “I am so lucky to be one of people who got those kisses! Tucker has a large human family that loves him very much! I am still so completely blown away over his coming home!” — Watch it from Good Morning America via Facebook

Polar Bear Caught on Video Petting Dog

A sweet viral video shows a polar bear in Manitoba, Canada, with an unlikely pal. David de Muelles, who shot the video, said he stopped his tour bus near a sled dog sanctuary when he saw the bear petting and nuzzling one of the dogs. “This big bear had just woken up from a cat nap and stopped right by the dog,” de Muelles said. “The bear then just started gracefully petting the dog like a human.” — Watch it at the Huffington Post
