Delighted Dogs Splash at Park

Everybody in! All summer, they watched as the kids went off to splash around at the water park. Finally, the dogs had their day at a Lakeview Park in Idaho. The pups — including many very happy Retrievers —were allowed to run and play in the spray ground on the park’s last day of the summer season, and they were caught on a video that’s guaranteed to make you smile. Ticket sales raised money for a new dog park in the area. Many local pools and water parks around the country let furry friends have some fun just before they close for the summer. — Watch it at Today

Study: Dogs Understand What You Say and How You Say It

A new study finds that different parts of a dog’s brain react to the meaning of the words you say, and to the tone you use to say them. The Hungarian researchers used MRIs to record the dogs’ brain activity. A trainer spoke common words of praise to the dogs, including “good boy,” “super” and “well done,” and then neutral words like “however” and “nevertheless.” The words were spoken in both positive and neutral tones. The positive words spoken in a positive tone prompted strong activity in the brain’s reward centers, while all the other conditions resulted in a lot less response in the reward centers. The results of the experiments were published in the journal Science. — Read it at The New York Times

Cat Lost in Cross-Country Move

The Skelly family is relieved and grateful after their lost cat was found at a Michigan rescue center on Friday. Graham Skelly and his son Simon, 10, were traveling from Seattle to their new home in Virginia on Aug. 21, when they stopped at the center in New Buffalo. They were walking their 14-year-old cat, Milkie, on a leash, when the tabby got scared by a dog and took off into the woods. The father and son searched for Milkie for two hours before they had to leave, but thankfully, an employee of the center found and safely trapped the cat five days later. Graham Skelly returned to Michigan from Virginia to pick up Milkie on Sunday, and the senior cat could be heard meowing when a reporter interviewed him by phone. — Read it from the AP via Yahoo

Sea Lion Pup Explores With Mom

A sweet video shows a 2-month-old sea lion pup named Catalina making her debut in her outdoor exhibit at Washington’s National Zoo. The pup snuggles with her mom, Calli, and splashes in the water on the zoo’s American Trail. Calli also took the time to introduce her little one to the other members of the colony, including her dad, Jetty, and two females, Sidney and Summer. Happy splashing, Catalina! — Watch it from the National Zoo via Facebook

Owner Reunited With Long-Lost Cat

Smelly the cat disappeared from his Orlando, Florida, home eight long years ago, when he was 8 years old. At the time, he was one of three cats and a dog in Kathleen Critchon’s home. Since then, her other pets have passed away, and she now has three little boys — who were thrilled to meet Smelly last week after Critchon got a call saying her cat had been found. Critchon made the two-hour drive to Gainesville, where Smelly was found on a street and brought to a vet by a Good Samaritan. “If only he could tell his story. I want to know how he got to Gainesville. Did he trek there over the last eight years? Did someone pick him up and move to Gainesville with him?” Crichton asked. She hopes Smelly was taken care of, but says he’s doing well. Despite his advanced age, Smelly is just as feisty as the day he wandered off, said Critchon. — Watch it at Orlando’s WFTV

Researchers Find Great White Shark Nursery

For the first time, a team of researchers has found a great white shark nursery in the waters of the North Atlantic. “We have just been totally overwhelmed by the abundance here and the volume of sharks we're seeing,” Ocearch researcher Chris Fischer said of the area off Long Island, New York. The group was able to tag nine baby great whites. Among them were two young females, who they named Montauk (for a nearby town) and Gratitude. The tags should allow the scientists to track the sharks for about a decade. — Read it at Discovery News

Puppy Survives More Than 400 Bee Stings

A veterinarian in Arizona says a newly adopted 18-month-old puppy is lucky to be alive after being attacked by bees outside his home last week. On Aug. 20, owner Jeremy DeNoyer let his dogs, Lady and Tramp, outside into his yard. “My smallest dog, Tramp, was yelping,” DeNoyer said. “I figured he just wanted to come inside. And when I saw him, I opened up the curtains and [saw] he was just swarmed by hundreds of bees.” DeNoyer tried to rescue Tramp, but was stung 20 times himself. He called firefighters for help, and they were able to spray foam on DeNoyer’s home and the vacant home next door where the hive was located. Tramp had suffered more than 400 stings. “With as many stings as he had, he had more than enough to kill 50 percent of dogs his size,” said Dr. Cynthia Jones. Amazingly, though, Tramp responded to treatment, and on Thursday he got to go home, where he’s continuing to recover. — Read it at People Pets

Rare Tree Kangaroo Emerges From Pouch

An 8-month-old, endangered male Goodfellow’s Tree kangaroo is finally out of his mom’s pouch and exploring at Australia’s Perth Zoo. The baby was named Mian for a province in Papua New Guinea, which is the species’ native home. Mian’s keepers were able to keep a careful eye on his development while he was still in mom Kaluli’s pouch because they trained her to have her pouch checked. They used a small camera to peer inside and see milestones like when his toenails developed and when his fur first grew. The information they learned is expected to be helpful in managing the species. — See photos at Zooborns

Gobi Found in China

Earlier this month, we told you the incredible story of a little stray dog who spontaneously joined in a 155-mile ultramarathon across the Gobi desert in China in June and became inseparable from runner Dion Leonard. Leonard lives in Scotland, and as soon as the race was over, he started making plans to bring Gobi home with him — but knew it would take about four months to get her through medical checks and quarantine. There was an outpouring of support from all over the world, but earlier this week, Leonard got word that Gobi had disappeared from the home of a friend she was staying with. He immediately flew to China to join a search for her but feared they’d never find her. Luckily, a local man recognized her in a park, brought her home and called Leonard. “When we got there, I walked through the door and she came running towards me and ran around my legs and jumped up on me. It was love again at immediate sight,” said Leonard. He says he now plans to stay in China with Gobi until he gets the clearance to bring her home. — Read it at the U.K.’s BBC News

“Sleeping Beauty” Frog Discovered in Peru

Researchers in Peru were surprised to find a little brown frog with bright red legs. They’ve spent the last two years confirming that the species, which measures less than an inch long, is new to science. It was named Pristimantis pulchridormientes, or the sleeping beauty rain frog, in reference to the mountain range where it was found in Tingo Maria National Park. Locals describe the range as looking like a sleeping woman. The description of the new species was published in the journal ZooKeys. — Read it at National Geographic

Firefighters Save Blind, Deaf Dog

Sam, an 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel, is lucky to be alive after tumbling into a 40-foot well near his Maryland home that was open for repairs. The blind and deaf dog’s owner dropped a ladder into the well so he was able to at least climb out of the water while Prince Fredrick Volunteer Firefighter Team rushed to the scene on Tuesday. The crew set up a rope system and lowered a firefighter into the well. He picked up the scared dog and they were both pulled to the surface. Thankfully Sam was out of the hole within 30 minutes and didn’t suffer any injuries. — Read it at People Pets

Escaped Cat Found Under Seat on Plane

As passengers on an Air Canada flight were getting ready to disembark in Vancouver this week, a couple who was traveling with two cats in carriers realized that one had escaped during the flight. One of the flight attendants walked down the aisle asking if anyone had seen a cat, and was surprised when one passenger nonchalantly said yes. The man surprised even the woman sitting next to him when he said the cat was right at his feet. The friendly cat had no problem with the flight attendant collecting him to return him to his owner. “Anyone who’s ever tried to pick up a cornered cat knows they can be a little feisty but not this one,” said passenger Kath Thompson, who snapped a photo of the runaway kitty and the flight attendant who found him. — Read it at Canada’s CTV News

“Birthday” Puppies Celebrate Parks

As the National Park Service marks its 100th birthday today, it has five adorable partygoers celebrating the milestone at Alaska’s Denali National Park. The Huskies are 1 month old and are the latest in a long line of sled dogs who serve as the only canine rangers in the park system. To remember this special anniversary, they’ve all been dubbed the “Birthday” puppies and given celebratory names: Happy, Cupcake, Piñata, Party and Hundo (in reference to 100). The park says the healthy puppies are spunky like their mom, Annie. Proposal Could Ban Swimming With Dolphins

The popular tourist attraction of swimming with spinner dolphins in Hawaii would be banned under a proposal from NOAA Fisheries, which argues the interaction is depriving the nocturnal animals of the sleep they need. “We can't function as well as we could with a good night's sleep, same with dolphins. Over time, their health may be impacted. They may not nurture young as well. They may abandon their young or habitat, and they may suffer long-term population impacts," said Ann Garrett of NOAA Fisheries. The proposed rules would prohibit approaching the dolphins within 50 yards by means including swimming, snorkeling or boating within two nautical miles from shore. The waters designated by the plan include areas between the islands of Maui, Lanai and Kahoolawe, where dolphins can be found throughout the day. If the guidelines are passed, they would go into effect in 2017. — Read it at CNN

Critically Endangered Primate Spotted in Vietnam

A new group of rare primates that includes juveniles and infants is raising hopes that the Delacour’s langur might not disappear within the next decade as feared. A team of scientists discovered a group of about 40 of the primates, but that still brings the total population to less than 250. “The fact that they are breeding is brilliant news,” said Akofa Wallace, a spokeswoman for the team from Fauna and Flora International. The langurs’ habitat is threatened by mining, and they also face threats from poachers. — Read it at Discovery News

Smart Seal Hops on Boat for Safety

A group out boating to look for whales in British Columbia, Canada, got an unexpected close encounter with a clever seal. The group was watching a pod of 12 orcas hunting, when their prey sought refuge on their 33-foot zodiac boat. “All of a sudden it popped up a little bit closer and just stared at the boat… the next thing you know, it was scrambling to get on the back of the boat,” said Kirk Fraser, who had taken his visiting parents out on Powell River, told Canada’s Global News. The seal fell off the boat three times before managing to hang on long enough to outwit the killer whales, who kept circling the boat and making those on board nervous. But the whales never touched the boat itself in the 45-minute ordeal. Fraser caught several videos of the incident and posted them on YouTube, where they’ve gone viral. — Watch it at People Pets

Dog Wins Near-Unanimous Vote

For this candidate, likeability and trustworthiness are no problem. Duke, a handsome 9-year-old Great Pyrenees, was handily elected to a third term as mayor of Cormorant, Minnesota, last weekend. He only lost one vote — and that was to his girlfriend, Lassie. The election takes place at the village’s annual festival, Cormorant Daze. Duke’s followers in the village, which has a population of just over 1,000 humans, are clearly loyal. “I don’t know who would run against him, because he’s done such great things for the community,” said resident Karen Nelson, reported the New York Post. — Watch it at St. Louis’ Fox 2 Now

Maine Puffin Chicks Die at Record Rates

Machias Seal Island in the Gulf of Maine, which is the residence of a colony of 6,000 puffins, is seeing the worst die-off of chicks that’s been recorded. The dismal news is being blamed on a decreased supply of fish in the waters where the parents forage for food for their chicks. Normally, about 60 percent of the island’s puffin nests produce healthy chicks, but this year that number is only 12 percent. The decline in the fish supply could be due to warming waters, scientists said. — Read it at Discovery News

Study: Hereditary Disorders in Dogs Are More Common Than Thought

A new study from Finland’s University of Helsinki finds that genetic disorders in dogs are more widespread than scientists had believed. In tests of 7,000 dogs from 230 breeds for 100 different genetic disorders, the team found that one in six of the dogs had at least one of the predisposing genetic variants in their genome. “The challenge is to harness that potential for practical use in improved veterinary disease diagnostics, sustainable breeding selections, personalized pet care, and canine genetics research,” said lead author Dr. Jonas Donner. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. — Read it at Nature World News

A law enforcement officer in Indiana didn’t hesitate to rush to the rescue of a dog trapped inside a burning car this week. Two men standing nearby the scene of the fire told Lake County Sheriff Deputy Chief Dan Murchek that a dog who belonged to one of them might still be in the vehicle and they couldn’t get to her. “I ran up to the car,” Murchek said. “I looked in the backseat and I could see the dog. It was in the backseat on the floor obviously scared.” On his second attempt, Murchek was able to battle the heat and smoke and pull Bella out safely to reunite her with her owner. “I was at the right place at the right time,” Murchek said. — Read it at CBS Chicago

Black Lab Puppy Greets Fans

There’s an adorable new face on NBC’s “Today.” On Monday, the anchors introduced viewers to their second “puppy with a purpose” — an 8-week-old black Labrador Retriever who is being trained by America’s VetDogs to become a service dog for a veteran. The pup’s instructor, Olivia Poff, will teach him basics like learning to heel, stay, come, push and retrieve objects, and eventually, brace when a person needs help standing up or sitting down. The puppy follows in the steps of a yellow Lab named Wrangler, who stole hearts while he appeared on the morning show until he was ready to move on to his formal guide dog training with Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Viewers got to vote on the new puppy's name, and their choice was revealed on the show Tuesday. He'll be called Charlie. — Read it at Today and follow him on Twitter

Study: Chimps Choose Cooperation Over Competition

Researchers at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Georgia have found that chimpanzees choose to cooperate five times more frequently than they choose to compete, challenging the notion that cooperation is unique to humans. The apes were given thousands of opportunities to pull cooperatively at an apparatus filled with rewards. Either two or three chimps were needed to get the rewards, and while there was plenty of opportunity for competition or aggression, the researchers found that they overwhelmingly chose to work together. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. — Read it at Phys.org

The famed penguin proudly strutted along inspecting the soldiers as he was given his prestigious new title. The first Nils Olav was adopted by the unit in 1972, and the current penguin is the third to fulfill the role. He’s visited by the troops every few years and has been promoted through the ranks and held many titles over the years, reported the Independent. “At the tattoo we, of course, have many inspecting officers but this is by far my favourite. Mailman Shares Sweet Bond With Pooch

Pippa has a special friend in Martin Studer, the postal carrier who delivers the mail to her home in Brisbane, Australia. Studer often shares photos of the dogs he meets along his route on Facebook, and the Golden Retriever is one of his favorites. Sometimes, though, there’s no mail for Pippa to retrieve. Hero Dog Dies Shielding Baby From House Fire

August 22, 2016 at 09:58PM by
>br> A dog named Polo lost his own life protecting his owner’s 8-month-old baby from a fire that quickly consumed their Baltimore townhouse last week. Erika Poremski said she’d stepped outside to get something from her car, and when she turned around, she saw flames coming from the house. She tried desperately to get back inside and get to Viviana and Polo, but couldn’t get back in. Poremski believes the 6-year-old dog could have run down the stairs and outside to safety, but instead, firefighters found him covering the baby with his body. Viviana only suffered burns on her arm and side thanks to Polo. Sadly, it was too late for Polo, but Viviana is in serious condition and recovering. “He was everything to me along with my daughter,” Poremski said. — Read it at CBS News

Dog Survives in 12-Inch Pipe

Edgar is a little banged up, but he’s back home and resting after being freed from a narrow drainage pipe in his Ohio neighborhood. Sean Ryan was working in his garage earlier this month when his two newly adopted dogs, Edgar and Oscar, took off after a squirrel. Sean and his wife, Juli, searched all night, but to no avail. In the morning, Oscar returned, but without Edgar. They continued searching for Edgar, never expecting to find him where they did. Sean was out on a walk seven days later when he thought he heard something that sounded like Edgar. The whining got louder as Sean got closer to the pipe, and he took a peek inside. “He saw me and that's when he sounded the alarm, he started wailing and crying and then barking like, ‘Oh my gosh you're here,’” said Sean. The fire department came to the 4-year-old Retriever’s rescue, carefully cutting the pipe open to get him out. The Ryans took Edgar for veterinary treatment, and he’s now recovering at home with Oscar. — Watch it at Cincinnati’s WKRC

Hero Dog Dies Shielding Baby From Fire

A dog named Polo lost his own life protecting his owner’s 8-month-old baby from a fire that quickly consumed their Baltimore townhouse last week.

Study: Turtles, Birds See Shades of Red Humans Can’t

A new study finds that a “red gene” in some birds and turtles that originated in dinosaurs gives them special color vision that allows them to see in shades of red that humans can’t detect. For example, two birds that look the same to us appear differently to birds with the CYP2J19 gene. Scientists think birds and turtles are the only land animals that still have the red gene. Zoo’s Pandas Celebrate Birthdays

The giant panda family at Washington’s National Zoo had one big birthday party on Saturday. Bei Bei celebrated his first birthday, his big sister Bao Bao marked her third, and their dad, Tian Tian, turned 19. All of their birthdays fall within the same week. But it was mom Mei Xiang who indulged in Bei Bei’s first birthday cake, packed with frozen juice, fruit and sweet potatoes, while the birthday boy himself stayed inside, away from the large crowd. — See photos from the National Zoo via Flickr

Visitors Witness Gorilla Birth

Rare Zebra Born in Toronto

An endangered Grevy’s zebra filly who was born at the Toronto Zoo to mom Tori on July 26 and made her public debut on Thursday. Her keepers report she started to walk 10 minutes after her birth, fulfilling an important milestone, and she’s “already starting to develop her own strong and confident personality.” The zebra species is primarily found in Kenya and Ethiopia, and the threats they face in the wild include loss of grazing habitat, hunting and disease. She joins a 2-year-old sister, Leia, at the zoo — and at least one of the zoo’s Facebook fans suggested naming the new little one Rey, for a Star Wars theme. — See photos from the Toronto Zoo via Facebook

Atlanta Panda’s Pregnancy Confirmed

There’s exciting news for another endangered species, too! On Tuesday, Zoo Atlanta confirmed with an ultrasound that its panda Lun Lun is expecting a cub. The panda was artificially inseminated in March. The image, along with Lun Lun’s hormone levels and her behavior, suggest a birth could take place within three weeks — so the zoo will go on panda watch Monday, monitoring the panda mom around the clock. Still, officials are cautiously optimistic, as the possibility that the pregnancy could fail remains. This would be the 6th cub for the experienced 18-year-old mom and her partner, Yang Yang, who’s also 18. Their most recent offspring are the only surviving giant panda twins born in the U.S., 3-year-olds Mei Lun and Mei Huan. — Read it from Zoo Atlanta

Study: Birds Know How to Reel in Food With String

Several animals have passed a test to see if they could figure out how to pull a piece of twine to get to a treat. Kangaroos, dogs, lemurs and gorillas are among the species that have pulled the twine and passed a variation of the test — and now a new study shows the bullfinch and the Carib grackle of Barbados were also able to successfully perform the task. The task was especially challenging for birds, who had to clutch the string with their beaks and then hold the slack with a foot while they went back for another pull with their beaks. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. — Read it at National Geographic

Raccoons in State Capitol Caught on Video

Surveillance footage captured two masked bandits sneaking down a hallway in the Oklahoma Capitol building after rummaging through a senator’s office and splashing around in a bathroom. The destructive intruders were a pair of raccoons. A cleaning crew caught them red-handed and trapped them in a bathroom until animal control officers could come and collect them on Wednesday night. “They didn't have any ID on them, no known address,” joked Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Hero Wants to Give Pup a Home

A police officer who helped save a struggling Australian Shepherd mix from a canal in Phoenix would love to give her a forever home. When the officer spotted the pup on Saturday, she was in search of water. But she got herself into danger when she leaned over the steep edge of a flowing canal to try to take a drink. The officer saw her tumble in and get swept up in the strong current, and called animal rescuers from the Arizona Humane Society for help. After several unsuccessful attempts to catch her as she treaded water for an hour, she passed out from exhaustion, the AHS said. Thankfully, one of the rescuers managed to grab ahold of her right before she slipped under the water and got her to the AHS’ animal hospital for help. She was malnourished and suffering from wounds she got while trying to climb out of the canal, but she’s been making an amazing recovery. “Poor thing has been through so much but she’s pure sweetness,” said Ashleigh Goebel of the AHS. The officer who initially found the pup plans to adopt her if an owner doesn’t come forward. — Read it at People Pets

Cute Goats Saved From Wildfire

The Henderson family had only about 10 minutes to flee their northern California home after they spotted smoke and ashes from a 4,000-acre wildfire rising from behind a neighbor’s house. They piled into the car with their three young girls and six of their goats, but had to leave about 10 goats behind because the scared animals were hiding and running away.  “We got the pens open so the goats could at least run, and then we had to get in the car and drive away,” said Mary Henderson. Thankfully, there were heroes nearby who saw the goats. Firefighters and even a freelance photographer who was documenting the blaze, Noah Berger, jumped into action. They managed to carry the little goats out of harm’s way. The Hendersons later saw a news story about the goats’ rescue, and they’ve located about five of them. They’re asking for help with finding the others who were pulled from the fire. — Read it at SFGate.com

Study: Many Dogs Prefer Praise Over Food

As much as your dog loves food, he might love praise from you even more. The more, the merrier. New research finds that the bigger a bird flock becomes, the faster the birds in it will fly. “I was surprised that it is such an important factor. They theorize that large flocks tend to include larger-sized birds, who move faster than smaller birds. Panda Keepers Find Second Cub

The Schönbrunn Zoo in Austria announced on Aug. 7 that its giant panda, Yang Yang, had given birth to a cub. But they started to wonder if she’d really had twins after hearing what sounded like the squeaks of not one but two tiny cubs coming from the nest box. Five days later, their suspicions were confirmed when they saw a second cub cuddling with Yang Yang on camera. The mom had conceived and given birth naturally, and the keepers hadn’t entered her den. Although pandas who give birth to twins in the wild tend to rear only the stronger of the two, both newborns appear to be doing very well so far, the zoo said. “Both pups have little fat bellies and mother panda Yang Yang is very relaxed,” zoologist Eveline Dungl said. “The little ones can be rarely seen on the pictures because Yang Yang warms them between her large paws most of the time.” — Read it at ABC News

Complex Rescue for Dog in Well

A team of firefighters and rescuers in Maryland came to the rescue of a Saint Bernard named Mabel on Monday after she fell to the bottom of a 30-foot dry well in her yard. Daniel Lemmon, a firefighter with the Harford County Technical Rescue Team, rappelled down into the narrow space to get to Mabel in a complicated rescue. He harnessed her and the team lifted her out using a pulley system. “She was an excellent patient. And I’m serious, because the dog cooperated 100 percent. She was so cooperative the whole time, no issues at all, didn’t snap at me, didn’t bark,” Lemmon said. “If there’s someone who’s the star of this, it’s really the dog.” Mabel seemed to be just fine when she was set back on the ground. She even took off running in circles, the rescue team said. A trip to the vet confirmed that she hadn’t been injured in her ordeal. “They couldn't find a sore spot on her, but they did recommend buying her a cape because she's obviously a super dog,” owner Leslie Ruhno said in a Facebook comment thanking the rescuers. — Read it at ABC News

Magpies and Crows Compete for Cheetos in Study

When she wanted to investigate how smaller magpies and larger crows compete for food, behavioral ecologist Rhea Esposito used bright orange Cheetos so she could see what was happening from her car, which was parked 20 feet away. In what she dubbed the Cheetos Challenge, the birds had to use a tool (a string) to pull the snack out of a hollow log. She found that the daring magpies were the first to explore and taste the Cheetos. The crows would repeatedly approach and retreat, but when they determined that the Cheetos were tasty, they would steal them from the magpies. Esposito presented the results of her experiment at the Ecological Society of America convention in Florida. — Read it from the AP via the San Francisco Chronicle
