A new Pit Bull ban in Montreal, Canada, comes after a 55-year-old woman was killed in a brutal dog attack earlier this year. But the ban, which goes into effect Oct. 3, has been met with outrage and online petitions to stop it. The new policy requires that residents who currently own Pit Bulls register them by the end of the year or the dogs will face the possibility of euthanasia. The Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals filed a lawsuit on Wednesday seeking to nullify the new legislation. — Read it at Time

Nearly-Blind Dog Pulled From Well

Firefighters in Georgia worked for three hours to save a 10-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever as he struggled to keep his head above water in a 40-foot-well on Monday. Bama, who’s nearly blind, had wandered over to visit his neighbor when he fell into the narrow hole, which was open because the neighbor was working on the well. The Henry County Fire Department arrived on the scene and lowered a firefighter into the well to save Bama. “The dog was really friendly, and when he was out, he even seemed like he was going around to thank everyone,” said department spokesman Capt. Michael Black. Bama’s owner, James House, was grateful, too. “I brought him home and hugged him — mud and all,” he said. — Watch it at ABC News

Study: Genes Influence Dogs’ Social Ability

Researchers in Sweden have found a relationship between five different genes and the ability of dogs to interact with humans. “Our findings are the first to reveal genes that can have caused the extreme change in social behavior, which has occurred in dogs since they were domesticated," said lead researcher Per Jensen of Linköping University. The scientists tasked 500 Beagles with a similar history of human interaction with trying to open a container with a tight lid to get to a treat inside. They then quantified the willingness of dogs to seek physical contact with a person in the room for help. The dogs seeking contact more often carried certain genetic variants. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports. — Read it at Science Daily

Family Finds Facebook Famed Dog

Two years ago, Captain Ron disappeared from his owners’ Tennessee farm. The family searched for their dog, who’d lost an eye due to a fungal infection, for months with no luck. But they were surprised and relieved to discover recently that the now 13-year-old dog is living contentedly at the Old Friends Senior Dogs’ Sanctuary. The Tennessee sanctuary often posts photos of Captain Ron on Facebook that get shared widely, and that’s how his former owners spotted him. The family has since moved out of state and they’re living in a situation where they can’t take Ron back. But they contacted Old Friends to tell them how heartwarming it was to know their beloved dog was living out his golden years in good hands and making people happy on social media. The sanctuary wrote on Facebook that they were happy to give Ron’s family, who “obviously loved him and cared for him deeply,” the peace of mind to know that their dog is “doing great.” — Read it at People Pets

Fat Cat Draws Visitors to New Hampshire Hotel

An adopted cat who weighs in at 31 pounds has become a celebrity both on the Internet, and at the Best Western Silver Fox Inn where he resides. Susan and Tor Brunvand adopted the now 8-year-old tabby from a shelter six years ago. Right after they brought him home, the couple says Logan started stealing food from their other two cats and slowly packing on pounds. The Brunvands say they’ve tried everything to get Logan to lose weight, but nothing seems to help. Guests at the New Hampshire hotel love meeting Logan and sharing photos and videos of him online. “He is one of the happiest, easiest cats I’ve ever had,” Susan Brunvand said. “He doesn’t think he’s fat.” — Read it at CBS News

Are Dogs Able to Sniff Out Lung Cancer?

A new study finds that dogs specially trained to sniff for lung cancer may have more work to do.

The dogs sniffed the breath samples of 122 people and correctly identified the subjects with lung cancer 78.6 percent of the time. However, they were only able to detect 34 percent of patients who do not have lung cancer.

“Our dogs made mistakes with both positive and negative samples," said study co-author Klaus Hackner, from Krems University Hospital in Austria. Hackner thinks the dogs’ success rate could be improved in a training program designed to reward them more often. The study was published in the Journal of Breath Research. — Read it at Seeker

Baby Koala Gets Stuck on Fence

A young koala was caught on video Monday when it got stuck on a fence while trying to follow its mom. The joey was squeaking as it did its best to get over the fence on a street in Burnside, Australia. Luckily, mom was nearby and climbed down a tree trunk to offer her help. She climbed up just enough so that her little one could safely grab hold of her fur and climb on her back. Once the joey was firmly holding on, they headed off into the shade of nearby tree together. — Watch it from Australia’s Farm Barn via Facebook

Blind Horse and Guide Horse Need a Home

A pair of horse friends is now waiting to find a home together at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. The duo has developed a special bond since they were rescued. Daisy, 10, is blind, and Angel, 17, sticks by her side as a guide. Angel doesn’t mind that Daisy follows her and occasionally bumps into her, and if they’re separated, Angel will whinny to her friend to make sure she can find her. “Sometimes you just need a friend who gets you,” the rescue group wrote in a Facebook post about the pair earlier this month. Daisy was found wandering in the summer of 2015, and met Angel when she was rescued from a neglectful situation. The rescuers noticed that the two were quite compatible and enjoyed each other’s company when they were housed together. — Watch it at USA Today

TSA Dog Named for Hero Retires

After working for six years to detect explosives at New York’s JFK International Airport, Ssiller the TSA dog is ready to relax in his well-deserved retirement. The 7-year-old black Labrador Retriever was named for 9/11 firefighter Stephen Siller, who wasn’t on duty but headed to the World Trade Center to help on the day of the attacks, and lost his life saving others. Ssiller is being adopted by his handler, TSA Inspector Christopher Neeson. “It's going to be a big change for him in retirement, one that he deserves for so many years of service to the mission. I imagine he'll miss working in the airport,” Neeson said. “My wife is in love with him, my children are in love with him, there is no way I could not have him.” — Read it at New York’s ABC 7

Kittens Take the Field for Their Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is still more than four months away, but some “catletes” are already preparing for the big day. The North Shore Animal League brought 100 adoptable kittens to the Hallmark Channel’s studio this week to start taping the adorable Kitten Bowl competition. After this week, the kittens will go back to the shelter, where they’ll be available for adoption, said Beth Stern, who hosts the special. “Britain’s Oldest Cat” Gets a Home

A sweet, very senior cat who was left in a box outside an animal shelter in London three weeks ago will now get the chance to live out his life in a loving new home. The staff at the RSPCA Southall Cattery discovered Banjo was microchipped in 1991 when he was about 2 years old, so they estimate he’s now between 25 and 27 years old. A shelter staffer says he’s the oldest cat they’ve had by far — the oldest before Banjo was about 13 to 14 years old. “He is such a charming, sweet old man, he is eating well and enjoying life in the cattery,” said staffer Aneel Odhwani, reported the U.K.’s Daily Mail. Banjo will be heading to his home with a “nice family” this week. — Read it at People Pets

Florida Dog Found 1,100 Miles From Home

Cynthia Abercrombie has no idea how her 10-year-old Great Pyrenees mix, Apollo, wound up in Massachusetts six weeks after he disappeared from his Florida home — but she’s thrilled to have him back. Apollo was found on Friday night, 1,100 miles from his home. She believes someone may have stolen him. East Coast Paws, a volunteer animal transport service, arranged to get Apollo back home to Florida. They organized nearly two dozen volunteers to drive an hour before handing Apollo off to the next driver, and reunited him with his emotional owner. “A great big thank you to all who helped get Apollo home,” Abercrombie commented on the group’s Facebook page on Tuesday. “I hope more volunteers will begin to help because of Apollo’s story.” — Read it at First Coast News

Traffic Noise Makes It Hard for Owls to Hunt

A new study finds that owls can lose nearly 90 percent of their hunting efficiency when the level of traffic noise is loud enough. Owls rely heavily on their sharp hearing to find food. In a study of 78 long and short-eared owls in Japan, researchers found that when traffic noise was lowest at 40 decibels, the owls lost 17 percent of their ability to hear the prey over road sounds. But when the decibel level reached 80, the birds lost 89 percent of their ability to hear their prey. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports. — Read it at Seeker

Baby Otter Settles in to New Home

Rialto is making himself at home at the Vancouver Aquarium — and giving out lots of sweet kisses to his caregivers. The sea otter pup was found emaciated, sick and alone on a remote beach at the edge of Olympic National Park in Washington State on August 1, and got 24-hour care for six weeks at the Seattle Aquarium. On Sept. 19, he made the trip to his new home in Vancouver. U.S. officials have deemed Rialto non-releasable because he was stranded at just a few weeks old, and never got the chance to learn how to survive on his own. The pup will be gradually introduced to the aquarium’s other otter residents. For now, he’s adorably cuddling with head veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena, as you can see in a video of his latest check-up. — Watch him at the Baby Otter Cam

Joey Cuddles With Stuffed Animal

Shayne, a koala joey who was rescued in Australia after his mom was fatally struck by a car, is finding some comfort in a stuffed animal koala who’s just his size. He’s being cared for at the Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital, where he’s been wrapped in cozy blankets as he clings to the toy as a coping mechanism while he learns to live without his mom. “He wouldn’t have lasted even a day in the wild by himself at this young age,” said the hospital’s director, Dr. Rosie Booth. The staff is giving him around-the-clock car and helping Shayne learn social and survival skills. They hope to release him back into the wild when he’s ready. — Read it at Today

Study: Horses Use Symbols to Show They Want Blankets

New research shows horses have the ability to read symbols on a sign and convey their desire — in this case, whether they want a blanket. The researchers spent two weeks training the horses to read three signs. One was pure white, one was white with a horizontal black bar and the third was white with a vertical black bar. The scientists said that after just 11 days, the horses had caught on and were using the signs to report whether they wanted a blanket. They said the horses also appeared excited at being able to communicate with their trainers in this way, sometimes responding without being asked. The study was published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science. — Read it at Phys.org

Police Officer Adopts Puppy Abandoned in Chase

At the end of a car chase in New Zealand in August, a police officer reached under the seat of the vehicle abandoned in the pursuit and found a “tiny, fat and scared” 5-week-old puppy. The police thought she might have been stolen in a burglary with the property that was found in the car. They brought her to a local shelter but no one ever came forward to claim her, so one of the officers involved, Marisha Allen, and her husband adopted the pup. They named her Chase, and she’s “thriving as a much loved family dog,” the New Zealand Police wrote in a Facebook post Monday. — Read it at New Zealand’s Stuff

Shepherd Escapes Shelter

Offers to adopt a 2-year-old German Shepherd have poured in to a California shelter after it released surveillance video and images of her deftly making her way out of her kennel and through three doors to escape last week. Ginger had been reluctantly surrendered to the Apple Valley Animal Shelter by her homeless owner days earlier, because he didn’t want her to have to live out of a vehicle. The shelter staff believes the heartbroken dog was trying to get back to her owner. Luckily, alarms went off and Ginger was found three days later a few blocks from her previous owner’s home. She’s now in a more secure area while the shelter staff reviews the many applications to adopt Ginger that have come in since her escape story made news. — Read it at California’s KSAT

Californians Can Save Dogs From Hot Cars

New legislation that was signed into law Saturday allows Californians to break into vehicles to rescue dogs or cats who appear to be in danger from excessive heat. Under the new law, the citizen must first call law enforcement to report the situation, but if they believe the animal is in imminent danger and authorities aren’t arriving quickly enough, the law gives them immunity from criminal liability for damaging the car to save the animal. — Read it at the Los Angeles Times

Poaching Takes Dramatic Toll on African Elephants

The International Union for Conservation of Nature said Sunday that Africa’s elephant population has suffered its worst drop in 25 years, due to poaching. Estimates from across Africa put the total elephant population at around 415,000 — down about 111,000 over the last decade. The numbers show “the truly alarming plight of the majestic elephant,” said IUCN chief Inger Andersen. “It is shocking but not surprising that poaching has taken such a dramatic toll on this iconic species.” — Read it at Phys.org

Puppy Falls Off California Cliff

A relieved Pit Bull puppy named Marshmallow had lots of love to give her heroes when they saved her from a dark hillside after she fell over a cliff in northern California on Tuesday night. The puppy’s owners had stopped on the side of Highway 1 to give Marshmallow a potty break, but said she hopped out of the car before they could get her leash on her. After she fell, the owners called Timber Cover firefighters at 10:12 p.m. They set up a system of ropes and pulleys, and searched for the dog for two hours. Finally, they spotted Marshmallow in a bush, about 250 feet down. “She was a little cold, definitely scared and (had) just a few minor scrapes to her face and her nose from sliding down the rock,” said training officer Nichole Lynn. “But she was super friendly and gave lots of kisses and cuddles all the way up the hill. She was a super sweet little puppy.” Marshmallow also had kisses for her owners as they were reunited and headed home. — Read it at California’s Press Democrat

Manatee Rescued in Massachusetts

A manatee rescued off the coast of Falmouth in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, will soon be headed for warmer waters. Manatees generally reside in the waters off Florida, but this wayward guy had been seen around Cape Cod since mid-August. The 68-degree waters there are cooling more now that it’s autumn. With the public’s help, the International Fund for Animal Welfare finally found the manatee on Thursday. Two dozen staff and volunteers worked to rescue the 1,000-pound marine animal, who was transported to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut for temporary rehabilitation. — Read it at Phys.org and see photos from the IFAW via Facebook

Survey: Most Retail Staff Unprepared to Accommodate Vets’ Dogs

A new survey from American Humane finds many retail employees are lacking training when it comes to service dogs specifically trained to help military veterans through post-traumatic stress. They found that 1 in 7 retail employees said they never received training on the questions they’re allowed to ask customers to verify an animal as a service dog, and more than half said the obviousness of a person’s disability plays a role in whether they think the dog is a legitimate service dog. It’s illegal for stores and restaurants to refuse to accommodate specially trained service animals. The survey was released at the start of a meeting in Washington to address the lack of nationally accepted standards for the definition, training, and credentialing of PTS service dogs. — Read it from American Humane

Police Officer Adopts Kitten He Saved

Hanford, California, Police Officer Kevin Wheat came to the rescue of a 3-month-old kitten — twice. The officer first met the 1.5-pound kitten when he responded to a call that the kitten had crawled into the engine compartment of a Dodge Caravan last weekend. It took an hour, but Wheat freed the kitten from the engine. He took him to the Kings County Animal Services shelter, and when the staff offered the cat to him first, he rescued him once again. “It was a perfect opportunity to give the cat a new home with tons of love and attention,” Wheat said. High School Football Players Rescue Cat From Storm Drain

September 22, 2016 at 09:44PM by
>br> Two Massachusetts football players showed their softer side before a game on Friday. They were headed home after school when they heard loud squealing coming from a storm drain, and realized it was a trapped cat. They ran to one of the boys’ homes and grabbed supplies including a crow bar to open the grate and a bucket with a rope to lift the cat out. Their plan worked. They pulled the struggling, wet cat out just in time. Although the scared feline then ran off, it’s safe from the waters in the drain. — Read it at Inside Edition

Stowaway Cat Travels to Belgium

Lola is enjoying lounging and loving scratches after apparently surviving a 4,000-mile, 4-week trip aboard a ship that sailed from Baltimore to Belgium. The cat was found when the last shipping container was pulled from the ship in Deurne, Belgium. Workers spotted a cat near the forklift and jumped in to rescue her. They gave her food and water, and used crowdfunding to get her treatment for an injury to her leg, reported the Baltimore Sun. In a Dutch video, Lola appears happy and well cared for while she rests and regains her strength. — Read it at People Pets

Citizen Finds Missing Police Dog

An explosives detection dog who ran away from his handler’s home in Prince William County, Virginia, Tuesday morning was quickly found by a local resident. Chuy, a German Shepherd, ran off while his handler’s wife was taking care of him. The dog’s handler, Virginia State Trooper Brandon West, told the public his dog would not bite. “Please if you see him try to play with him to get him to you and call #77 or 911,” he wrote. “THANK YOU to the area resident who spotted the German Shepherd, was able to get ahold of him, and called police. The beloved escape artist was located a short distance from his Nokesville residence ... and undoubtedly has a tale to tell about his adventures today!” the Virginia State Police posted on Facebook Tuesday night. — Read it at Washington’s WTOP

Endangered Hawaiian Chicks Transported to Refuge

In an effort to save the endangered Newell’s shearwater puffin, which lives only in Hawaii, experts removed eight chicks from their nests and flew them via helicopter to a protected habitat. The seabirds will stay there until they’re adults, when they’ll fly out to sea. "The predator-proof fence area within the refuge will provide a safe haven for the shearwaters which, like many other native Hawaiian bird species, are facing tremendous challenges with shrinking habitat and the onslaught of invasive species," said Heather Tonneson, project leader for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex. — Read it at the Christian Science Monitor

Dog Found After 5 Years

A Saint Bernard who was meant to be a companion animal for a Colorado girl with special needs has been found 800 miles away in Missouri, five years after she disappeared. Missy was found as a stray about a week ago in Hillsboro, Missouri, and two determined animal control workers tracked down her owners despite the outdated contact information on her microchip. One of the caring workers, Melissa Morton, is leaving Missouri Friday to drive the dog home to her family. “They do have two children who are special needs so travel for them is not easy,” said Morton. “We could put the dog on a plane and send it to them, but that's just really impersonal.” — Watch it at Colorado's 9News

Bridal Party Holds Adoptable Rescue Puppies Instead of Bouquets

September 21, 2016 at 09:53PM by
>br> Wedding photos are usually happy — but a couple in Pennsylvania found a way to make them even better at their Sept. 1 nuptials. They added puppies! Five 8-week-old sisters from a litter of Boxer and Coonhound mix puppies — plus one special Pit Bull named Biggie Smalls for the bride — added more bliss to the wedding party’s photos. All of the pups were from the non-profit rescue Pitties Love Peace, where the bride, Sarah Crain, works. Photographer Caroline Logan said there were no “dresses harmed in the making of the photos!” and found the puppies made her job easier, as her subjects were more relaxed and natural. — See photos at People Pets

Dog-Loving Boy Gets Puppy

In June, we shared a sweet surveillance video of 9-year-old Josh Breaux biking into his neighbor’s driveway in Louisiana and sneaking into her garage to hug her black Labrador Retriever, Dutchess. The video went viral, and the dog’s owner learned that Josh’s own dog had passed away last year, and he “misses having a pup to love,” his mom explained at the time. Well, now Josh can get his hugs in any time he wants. His family recently added a new member: a black Lab puppy named Drake. The adorable duo has quickly become inseparable. — Watch it at North Carolina’s ABC 11

Southern Sea Otter Numbers Improve

There’s some good news for Southern sea otters, who are considered threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Telescope counts and aerial surveys by the U.S. Geological Survey have for the first time put their population at a number that would allow them to be removed from the threatened list. However, the otters will first need to repeat their strong showing for two more years — and officials are still concerned that there aren’t enough of the animals at the northern and southern ends of their surveyed range. The three-year running average of the annual census count has climbed from 2,939 in 2013 to 3,272 with their latest count. — Read it at Seeker

Dalmatian Puppy Sneaks Into Fire Station

When a Dalmatian mix puppy was lost at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, he seemed to instinctively know where to go for help: the fire station, of course! The pup followed an engine returning from a call into a Hillsborough County, Florida, fire house. “He eagerly made himself part of the crew,” said a spokesperson. A video shared by the department on Facebook shows him having a fabulous time exploring the station and getting plenty of attention from the firefighters. Luckily, though, Chico’s family was found and they were reunited later that day. “We are all so happy for a happy ending to this story!” the department said. — Watch it at Florida’s WFLA

Everybody Loves Professor Tirebiter

We’ve often seen stories about therapy dogs visiting college campuses at finals time to help students through the stress. Now, the University of Southern California has made a full-time hire to fill that role: a 2-year-old Goldendoodle who’s trained as a facility dog. Professor Beauregard Tirebiter has taken up residence on the second floor of the school’s student health center, where he wears a uniform and holds office hours. His name is a tribute to George Tirebiter, the nickname given to a dog who was the school's mascot in the 1940s. USC is hoping Professor Tirebiter will help create a sense of community and provide therapeutic companionship for its students. USC says he’s the first full-time university facility dog in the country. — Watch it at ABC News

Hero Dives Into Muddy Hole to Save Dog

September 20, 2016 at 09:33PM by
>br> Grouse shooting has been a summer pastime for centuries for people in Scotland. In the sport, Spaniels scare the birds out of the grass. But last week, one of those dogs found herself trapped in a hole in the muddy moors of an estate. After an extensive search, the estate’s head gamekeeper found Jazz, and his fellow keeper dove into the muddy pipe hole to get her. “Once she was located it was a massive relief to everyone,” said Jonny Stevenson, who dug through 6 feet of wet peat to reach Jazz. She was “very happy to see us all,” he said. Jazz was reunited with her grateful owner. — See photos at Buzzfeed

Injured Cat Saved by Police

A black cat is expected to survive after being hit by a car in Boston’s Callahan Tunnel last Tuesday. Massachusetts State Trooper James Richardson spotted the injured cat lying by the side of the road and stopped to rescue him. Richardson brought the cat to MSPCA-Angell, where they discovered he’d suffered head trauma and a broken pelvis, but he’s now recovering with several weeks of “cage rest.” “We all love and root for animals and there was no way I was going to leave him — I’m really glad he’s now in safe hands,” Richardson said. The cat is now named Callahan, for the tunnel, and he’s believed to be a stray. He will be available for adoption when he’s better, in about six weeks. — Read it at the Boston Globe

Study: Pigeons Can Learn to Distinguish Real Words

The birds were on par with baboons in a complex task that involved determining the difference between four-letter English words and four-letter non-words. In an experiment, pigeons were trained to peck four-letter words as they came up on a screen, or to instead peck a symbol when a non-word came up. The four pigeons in the study eventually built vocabularies of 26 to 58 words and more than 800 non-words. The researchers said the pigeons were even able to distinguish words they’d never seen before at a rate significantly above chance. "We may have to seriously re-think the use of the term 'bird brain' as a put down," said study author Professor Michael Colombo of the University of Otago in New Zealand. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. — Read it at Phys.org

Rare Gorilla Born at Zoo Atlanta

A critically endangered female Western lowland gorilla was born Sunday at Zoo Atlanta to mom Kudzoo, 22, and dad Taz, a 27-year-old silverback. The sweet little girl is the granddaughter of the famed Willie B., a gorilla who was named for the former mayor of Atlanta, and lived at the zoo for 39 years before his death in 2000. She’s the third baby girl for Kudzoo, following big sisters Macy and Merry Leigh. The Western lowland gorilla is among the most endangered species in the world due to threats including poaching, habitat loss and emerging diseases. — Read it at Zoo Atlanta

Beloved Polar Bear Settles in at New Home

Nora captured attention from around the world when she was hand-reared at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio after her mom started leaving her unattended for long periods of time. Now 10 months old, the cub has started a new adventure: last week, she moved across the country to the Oregon Zoo. Her Columbus keepers, who she’s very close to, have been helping with her transition. They traveled with Nora to her new home, and one of them has been spending the first week there while she adjusts to her new care team. Nora is in quarantine for 30 days, following normal protocol, and her new keepers expect the zoo’s good-natured, 31-year-old female polar bear Tasul to befriend Nora and become a mentor to her once they’re able to introduce the pair. — Read it at the Oregon Zoo and see video via Facebook

Dying Dog Lives to See Owners' Wedding

September 19, 2016 at 09:51PM by
>br> Charlie, a 15-year-old black Labrador Retriever, had lived through a lot with his owner, Kelly O’Connell, since she rescued him when he was a puppy and she was just 19 years old. Earlier this year, though, Charlie was diagnosed with a brain tumor. O’Connell and her fiancé, who are both veterinarians, had been watching Charlie closely and hoping he’d survive to see their wedding in Colorado this month, but thought the worst when he started to decline just before the big event. Amazingly, though, Charlie rallied just in time for the wedding. “It was almost as if he was like ‘no I want to see this.’ He got better,” O’Connell said. He made it down the aisle, and in a sweet moment captured by the wedding photographer, the bride’s sister carried him back up when he couldn’t do it on his own. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place, but his people where so glad Charlie was there — and O’Connell smothered him with kisses after the ceremony. He passed away a few days after the wedding. — Read it at the Washington Post

Pup Rescued From New York Bridge

A 6-month-old puppy is recovering after a harrowing experience on a major bridge in New York City. Ronin was out for a walk with his owner’s fiancé in the northern part of Manhattan when he broke free from his collar and ran away on Sept. 10. He wandered to a very dangerous place: the George Washington Bridge, which connects New York and New Jersey. He was hit by a truck, but thankfully, two Port Authority police officers saw the incident and raced to save Ronin. They got him to a local animal hospital, where his injured leg was treated. The next day, he was reunited with his owner, Desiree Justin. “I told (the officers), ‘You saved my family, but you also saved my marriage,’” she joked. “They really restored my faith in humanity.” Now, Ronin has a new middle name: Lucky George. — Read it at the New York Daily News

16 Stranded Dolphins Saved

In a “well-choreographed dance,” rescue teams helped 16 dolphins who became stranded in shallow water on a beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during low tide last week. With help from the public, a team from the International Fund for Animal Welfare moved the animals onto stretchers and then onto special carts. They were placed in trucks that transported them to a beach with deeper waters. “These animals were just so stunningly beautiful, so it was sad to see them stranded but amazing to watch everyone get together and help out,” said Sarah Pechukas Slivka, a local resident. — Read it at ABC News

Pygmy Hippo Cuddles With Mom

An adorable 1-month-old endangered pygmy hippo was born to parents Sirana and Nato at the U.K.’s Bristol Zoo. The family was bonding behind the scenes until their exhibit was reopened to the public last week. “The calf is looking very strong and he certainly feeds well,” said the zoo’s curator of mammals, Lynsey Bugg. “Like any youngster, he wants to be close to mum at all times and is often seen by her side. He spends short periods of time in the water but is not quite as good at swimming as his parents, so we often see Sirana guiding her little one back into the shallow water. Young hippos tire easily.” It’s believed there are less than 2,000 elusive pygmy hippos left in the wild. — Read it at the U.K.’s Bristol Zoo

Cat Who Was Buried Alive Finally Gets a Home

September 16, 2016 at 10:05PM by
>br> Nearly two years ago, Bart the “Zombie Cat” dug himself out of a grave where he’d been buried for five days and seemingly came back from the dead. The cat had been hit by a car and was mistakenly presumed dead by his owners. The owners took the severely injured cat to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and the staff there argued he shouldn’t return to his former home. That led to a 20-month legal battle between the original owner and the Humane Society for custody of Bart. Now, the case has finally been settled out of court, and the shelter was able to keep the cat and adopt him out. On Wednesday, the now-healthy cat moved into his forever home with the Humane Society employee who’d been fostering him. — Read it from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay

Hero Dog Saves Pup in Rubbish

“Miracle” puppy Autumn is alive and comfortably snuggling under blankets thanks to the determination of the dog who found her abandoned in Dublin, Ireland. The week-old puppy “would not have lasted probably even 24 hours if she had not been spotted by a very clever Terrier called Poppy, who when out for a walk with her owner ran over to the rubbish pile and refused to return when called,” the Dublin SPCA explained in a Facebook post Wednesday. “Poppy's owner had to walk over to see what Poppy was sniffing when she discovered little Autumn just lying there in the rubbish.” When her owner investigated, she found the puppy underneath the garbage pile and brought her to the SPCA. She’s now getting lots of TLC in the home of an experienced foster. — Read it at UPI

Study: Cat-Scratch Disease Can Cause Serious Illness

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control finds that while the total number of people infected with cat-scratch disease has gone down, the number of people who’ve become seriously ill with it has increased. The disease is caused by bacteria passed between cats by fleas. It can build up in the cat’s fur and gets on their paws and in their mouths when they groom themselves. If a person is then scratched by contaminated claws, they are at risk of getting the disease. It’s long been considered a mild illness, but the study finds it can be more serious for people with suppressed immune systems. — Read it at NPR

Seven Manatees Saved in Massive Rescue Effort

Dozens of volunteers worked Thursday to remove seven manatees from the golf course pond they’ve been stranded in since Hurricane Hermine hit Florida earlier this month. A storm surge had washed the marine animals over a bridge that separates the pond from a canal. While the manatees needed to be moved back to Crystal River, they weren’t exactly unhappy in their temporary home. “They've had a veritable buffet of vegetative life,” said Terry Natwick, a spokesperson for the Plantation golf course. “They're probably going to be really bummed that they're being taken out, to be honest with you.” The volunteers carefully hauled the manatees out onto land using nets. They were examined before being released back into Crystal River. — Read it at Tampa Bay’s Fox 13

8 Reasons Dogs Can't Wait for Fall to Begin

September 16, 2016 at 04:17AM by
>br> Many of us can’t wait to sip our first pumpkin spice lattes of the season, cheer for our favorite football teams and throw on our coziest sweaters. But what about our canine friends? Are they as excited as we are that it is almost fall? We’d like to think so! The pools may be closed and the days might be shorter, but there are plenty of reasons for dogs to love everything autumn has to offer.

To get in the fall spirit, we've rounded up our favorite fan-submitted photos of dogs enjoying the season and paired them with a few reasons why we suspect canines (and their owners, if we're being honest) can't wait for fall to begin.
