Dog Finds Kitten in Sewer
Leopard, a resident at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in Ohio, was out for a walk with a volunteer on Monday afternoon when she suddenly stopped in front of a sewer grate and wouldn’t budge. Soon after, the volunteer heard faint cries coming from below. The volunteer called for help, and deputies and other volunteers from the shelter were able to pull a small kitten from the drain. The cat is now staying in the home of one of the shelter’s volunteers. Leopard, a 6-year-old Shar Pei mix is still in need of a home, but it seems the attention from this story will help. On Monday, a New Jersey assembly committee approved a bill that would ban veterinarians in the state from declawing cats, treating the procedure as an act of animal cruelty. If the bill passes the legislature, those who violate the law would face up to a $1,000 fine and six months in prison. An acoustic buoy dubbed “Melville,” located 22 miles off New York’s Fire Island, recorded the telltale call of a migrating North Atlantic right whale on Monday. There are only about 500 of the species left in the wild. The buoy deployed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Wildlife Conservation Society monitors whales in near real-time in hopes of preventing deadly encounters between whales and ships. Melville has also surprised researchers by recording sei and fin whales over the last few weeks. North Atlantic right whales “mostly pass through the New York Bight during the fall on their migration to the waters of the southeast U.S., and again in the late winter on their migration back north to the Gulf of Maine — off Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine — and Canadian waters,” said WHOI scientist Mark Baumgartner. — Read it at SeekerImage: Bam Bam reunion
Emotional Reunion in Dallas
Jessica Urbina had an emotional reunion Monday night with Bam Bam, the Shih Zhu who disappeared from her Texas home four years ago, on Easter 2012. “I just never thought I'd hear anything from him ever again,” she said. Urbina and her family searched for Bam Bam for months with no luck. Two weeks ago, she got a call from an animal hospital in Las Vegas, asking if she’d lost a dog recently. She believes the dog, who’s now 7 years old, was stolen to be used in breeding. Bam Bam will have a new friend at Urbina’s home: Pebbles, another Shih Tzu she got a few months after Bam Bam disappeared. — Read it at the Dallas Morning NewsBaby Sloth Sticks Close to Mom
