Dog Alerts Owner to Fire

Randy Bova was cleaning his room in the Connecticut home he shares with his mother and brother when the family dog, Bailey, raced upstairs and started barking frantically outside his door. Randy followed her downstairs and found the first floor full of smoke. Scared and confused, the hero dog then ran into her kennel — and that’s when Randy saved her. He pulled her out of the crate and carried her outside to safety. “It wasn’t till then that Randy realized the entire house was engulfed in flames,” his brother, Robert, wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to cover the family’s expenses. Officers Reunite Family With Dog

Thirteen Fort Worth, Texas, police officers were honored Thursday for the great detective work they used to find a puppy who was stolen from his home and reunite him with his excited family. Petey, a 4-month-old Collie and Heeler mix, was taken from his owners’ home on May 7, along with property including jewelry and electronics. The detectives found items that belonged to the family at a local pawn shop, figured out who’d pawned them and got a search warrant. When they arrived at the address on May 20, they immediately spotted the rest of the family’s stolen belongings — including Petey. Then, they decided to surprise the Templeton family with their puppy. They told Julia Templeton they had a few more questions and asked where they could come to meet with the family. It turned out that they were at her 10-year-old daughter’s birthday party. So, the officers delivered the greatest surprise gift. “This is the best birthday present ever!” Templeton can be heard exclaiming in a sweet video of the reunion that was shared on Twitter this week in celebration of the officers being honored by the city’s mayor. — Watch it at ABC News

Cats Turn on Faucet, Causing Shelter Flooding

When Florida Humane Society President Carol Ebert got a call saying water was running out of the back door of the shelter Thursday morning, she thought it might be a burst pipe. But the staff soon realized the problem was coming from the cat room, where one of the felines turned on a faucet and left it running for about 17 hours. The flooding that ensued ruined the floors, cabinets and walls, resulting in about $5,000 worth of damage. The kitty residents weren’t harmed, though — they waited out the floods while hanging out on climbing structures. The faucet has now been replaced with one the cats can’t turn on, and the shelter is hoping to get donations to cover the cost of the renovations. — Watch it at Miami’s Local 10

Good Samaritans Save Dog

A runaway dog was reunited with his owner Friday night thanks to some caring drivers on a busy Tampa highway. They spotted the pup running in the roadway with his leash still attached, and slowed down to create a shield so he couldn’t get away. Then one driver, Carlos Ramos, jumped out to save the pooch, plucking him from a railing he’d jumped up on. It turned out that little Max was in a car with his owner’s daughter, Hannah Kelley, and her fiancé when they were involved in an accident, on a road just off the expressway. The scared dog took off running, and Hannah insisted her fiancé go searching for him even though she’d been injured. Ramos used social media to try to find Max’s owners, and it worked. Kelley was reunited with the dog, who was unharmed. “If I had a million dollars, I'd give you a million dollars,” Kelley told Ramos and his girlfriend as he was reunited with Max. — Watch it at Tampa’s Fox 13

Conservation Efforts Help Cottontail Population

It looks like the New England cottontail, the region’s only native rabbit species, is hopping into better days. The bunny’s numbers have declined by more than 75 percent since 1960, due to loss of habitat. But captive breeding and reintroduction efforts seem to be working. On Patience Island in Rhode Island, the population has doubled to more than 120. The New England cottontail needs a young forest to live in, so conservationists have identified the best locations for them and have been working to maintain the shrub layer the rabbits need in those areas. — Read it at New England Cable News

Study: Monkeys Choosier About Friends as They Age

If you’ve become more selective about who you spend time with as you’ve gotten older, you’re not alone. A new study finds that Barbary macaques do this, too. In humans, this is usually attributed to the knowledge that they have limited time left in life. But it’s assumed that monkeys don’t know about their limited lifetimes. "With increasing age, the monkeys became more selective in their social interactions," said Laura Almeling of the German Primate Center. "They had fewer 'friends' and invested less in social interactions. Interestingly, however, they were still interested in what was going on in their social world." The study was published in the journal Current Biology. — Read it at Phys.org

Gas-X

Gas-X (simethicone) is an over-the-counter medicine which can be utilized to relieve dogs of painful flatulence and wind, or as a guide amid a bloat emergency. It works by consolidating little gas rises in the digestion tracts into bigger gas bubbles which can then be passed all the more effortlessly from the body.

Contrary to popular belief, the medicine is not a cure for bloat, and may not be exceptionally compelling as a guide contingent upon the reason for the bloating. Be that as it may, it might purchase your dog some additional time and all owners ought to have the drug in their bureau for crisis circumstances.

Can I Give My Dog Gas-X?

Gas-X is exceptionally ok for dog, it is not absorbed into the circulatory system and is normally all around endured at abnormally high dosages. Up to 8000 mg has been given to dogs without creating reactions separated from a free stool, which is the reason numerous pick a “better to be as careful as possible” way to deal with this solution and give huge sums at whatever point they think their pooch is bloating.

Pregnancy: There is at present very little data about the security of this medication amid pregnancy, however it doesn’t cross the placenta and is liable to be protected. We suggest checking with your vet before offering simethicone to a pregnant pet.

Security Recommendations

For security we prescribe you:

  • Always seek veterinary care if you suspect your dog is bloating.
  • Always have a box of simethicone in your home for emergencies.
  • Continuously have a container of simethicone in your home for emergencies.
  • Feed your dog when they are calm, as opposed to when they have been practicing hard.
  • Feed smaller meals throughout the day instead of one large meal.
  • Try not to give an excess of water before or after dinners.

The most ideal approach to treat bloat is to ensure it never happens in the first place. Feeding your dog littler suppers during that time and sustaining them when they are refreshed will incredibly bring down the danger of them building up this risky condition.

What Is It Used For?

Simethicone can be utilized to relieve the uneasiness and pressure associated with gas. It can likewise be utilized as a part of a crisis amid the starting phases of bloat, yet might be less compelling or totally incapable as the condition advances, especially if the stomach turns.

Reactions

Simethicone is not liable to bring about any symptoms. On the off chance that to a great degree extensive sums are given your pooch could encounter free stools.

While WXYZ Channel 7 reporter Nima Shaffe was doing a live report in a Michigan parking lot on Monday morning, someone else stole the show — an adorable stray kitten. “He tried to take over my time and he’s been hanging out underneath our truck here and so we’ve taken him under our wing,” said Shaffe, before realizing the kitten was actually a female. The kitten darted around Shaffe’s legs, but then allowed him to pick her up and appear in his report. Dubbed Lucky Seven for Shaffe’s station, the 6-week-old kitten was taken in by the Humane Society of Huron Valley. She’ll stay in foster care for a few weeks until she’s big enough to be put up for adoption. — Watch it at ABC News

Visitor Saves Ducklings at Busch Gardens

Eric Pelno was in the right place at the right time for a family of ducklings. A duck nest that was precariously sitting atop a stone barricade at one of the Tampa Bay theme park’s rides collapsed, and about 15 ducklings began falling. Pelno’s partner, Channing Deren, caught part of the incident on video as Pelno stood under the barricade and caught several of the ducklings as they plummeted to the ground. The Busch Gardens staff rushed to help, and despite one duckling with a broken leg, all of the ducklings were safe and returned to their mom. — Watch it at Facebook

Puppy With Special Needs Gets a Second Chance

The Los Angeles based Road Dogs & Rescue stepped in to help Herbie, a 9-week-old French Bulldog who was born with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes a fluid buildup inside the skull. Because of that, he was left unable to stand or walk. Many times, puppies with the condition are put down, but someone intervened and got Herbie to the rescue group instead. “I wanted to give Herbie a chance because when you meet him, you can see he has a feisty spirit,” said the group’s Nikki Carter. He’s going through physical therapy, is on medication to reduce the fluid in his skull and will probably need brain surgery when he is 6 months old. After that, Herbie will likely be put up for adoption. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Royals Fans Save Puppy

Michael Warner and his family decided it was too hot to watch the Kansas City Royals wrap up their series against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon, so they decided to leave the game at Missouri’s Kauffman Stadium early. But while they were making their way through the parking lot, they heard a whimpering noise, and realized it was coming from an 8-week-old puppy who was waiting in a hot car with the windows cracked open. Warner and his family called 911 and flagged down Royals staff members. Then, Warner was able to fit his hand through the window and pull the hot puppy out. He handed the puppy over to a Royals employee, who took care of him overnight before handing him over to the KC Pet Project. Warner said he was glad he decided to leave the game early because it went into extra innings, which would have meant more time in the hot car for the pup. The shelter is waiting now to see if the puppy’s owner comes forward. If not, he will be available for adoption. — Read it at Kansas City’s Fox4KC

Baby Rhino Splashes in the Mud

A rare Sumatran rhino calf at the International Rhino Foundation doesn’t know how special she is. The month-old baby just wants to play in the mud, as a rhino calf does. She was born in May to mom Ratu, who also appears in the video of her delightful little one playing. Sumatran rhinos are listed as critically endangered, with merely 100 of them left in the wild. — Watch it at Today
