Carrie Fisher's French Bulldog to Live With Her Daughter, Billie Lourd

December 29, 2016 at 10:38PM by
>br> As shocked fans mourned “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher, many wondered what would happen with her beloved French Bulldog, Gary. The dog was always by his owner’s side, and visited her at UCLA Medical Center after she suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday. Family friends say Gary will now live with Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd. Lourd has her own Frenchie, Tina, who was best friends with Gary. Fisher, 60, had said in the past that she wanted Gary, who acted as a service dog to help with her bipolar disorder, to live with Lourd if anything happened to her. The family suffered another tragic loss on Wednesday, when Fisher’s 84-year-old mother, legendary actress Debbie Reynolds, died one day after her daughter. — Read it at TMZ

Orangutan Adopts Second Baby

An experienced and affectionate 41-year-old Sumatran orangutan mom gave birth to a baby boy in October, and soon took on the role of raising another baby born in her group. Jahe, 13, became overwhelmed soon after the birth of her first baby, and willingly handed her baby over to Matra. “This is a great relief for Jahe,” said Beatrix Köhler, a curator at the Hellabrunn Zoo in Germany. “Although she always watches Matra from afar, she is not interested in the child.” Experts have often observed that the most experienced mom in the group of orangutans tends to take care of all the offspring. The two infants share the same dad, Bruno. The Sumatran orangutan is listed as critically endangered in the wild. — Read it at Zooborns

Drones Help Steer Elephants From Danger

Small unmanned aerial vehicles that are used by hobbyists have proved successful at spooking wayward elephants just enough to steer them away from private farmland in Tanzania, where they can get in trouble with farmers. Field trials by wildlife managers showed that when drones were flown overhead, the elephants would consistently leave the farmland where they were grazing. The study was published in the journal Oryx. — Read it at Seeker

Firefighter Adopts Shelter Pup

Rob Tackett, a 34-year-old South Carolina firefighter and Army veteran, posed with a shelter puppy for the annual Charleston Animal Society Firefighter Calendar — and found a new best friend. The German Shepherd named Kimber was randomly placed with Tackett for the charity calendar’s photo shoot. The puppy had been found starving and suffering from mange on a roadside before being nursed back to health by the shelter. “He carried her around like a baby all day,” said Jen Coleman, assistant producer for the calendar shoot. “She had an abusive past, and she’s not great around men, but there was this instant connection and she warmed right up to him.” In a Facebook post earlier this month, Tackett said he has been training Kimber as a PTSD dog and plans to bring her to visit other veterans. — Read it at the New York Post

Rescued Puppy Joins Her Hero’s Family

Orphan Annie was a tiny puppy when she was found all alone outside a few weeks ago by Fairfax County, Virginia, Police Officer Leyton. Annie was only a few weeks old at the time and Leyton brought her to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, where she stayed while they waited to see if an owner would come forward. When no one did, Leyton asked if he could foster the puppy, and he and his family fell in love with her. Now that she’s 8 weeks old and ready for adoption, Officer Leyton has officially made Annie part of his family. — See photo from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter’s Facebook

Cat With Bullet in Spine Thrives, Needs Forever Home

December 28, 2016 at 10:15PM by
>br> When animal control officers in Naples, Florida, first found Roger, they didn’t think would make it. The cat had been shot; the bullet was lodged in his spine and he was unable to move at all. But a veterinarian had an idea. Injecting Roger with a steady dose of steroid shots brought about amazing changes. The cat not only survived, but improved by leaps and bounds — literally. Though Roger still has trouble controlling his bladder, and the bullet (under the advice of top surgeons) remains in his spine, an anonymous donor has pledged to pay his medical expenses the rest of his life. Now all Roger needs is a forever home. — Read it at The Dodo

"Christmas Miracle" Reunites Dog with Owner

When the Ryan family’s dog disappeared after a hit-and-run on December 15, they feared they might not see their beloved Kacy again. But on Christmas Eve, Thomas Ryan was celebrating the holiday at his niece’s house when he received some good news. “I got a phone call from the Warwick Police Department. They asked me if I believe in Christmas miracles and I said, ‘Yes, I do,’” Thomas recalled to NBC 10. “They said, ‘A lady on Jefferson Street has your dog.’” The family drove right over to be reunited with Kacy. “I opened the door and Kacy was so excited to see me,” Linda Ryan said. “She was wagging her tail and kissing me.” — Read it at People Pets

Trying Not to Hit a Reindeer? There's an App for That

With 300,000 reindeer roaming the wilds of Finland, it’s no surprise that nearly 4,000 are killed every year in traffic accidents. But a new app is hoping to change that. Called “Porokello,” or “Reindeer Bell,” the app allows drivers to register any reindeer spotted near roads with the touch of a button. Using GPS technology, it creates a one mile warning zone that lasts for an hour and warns other app users approaching the area.“If there are reindeer, (drivers) reduce speed,” Ylinampa said. “When they have passed the warning place, then they can get back to the normal speed again.” And it seems to be working — there were 300 fewer reindeer accidents in November than compared to the same month in 2015. — Read it at Yahoo Sports

Study Reveals Bat Communication

Researchers are starting to understand what bats are saying, thanks to a study from Tel Aviv University that monitored the animals audibly and visually for more than two months. After recording more than 15,000 calls, the team found that there was a significance to their screeching. Different calls were used for different situations, many of which were aggression-filled encounters, the team observed. "We have found that bats fight over sleeping positions, over mating, over food or just for the sake of fighting," said study lead Yossi Yovel.  The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports. — Read it at Seeker

Man Could Face $60,000 Fine for Pet Rabbits

A man in  Queensland Australia could face a hefty fine for keeping pet rabbits, which are illegal under the city’s biosecurity laws. The Brisbane City Council has received 11 complaints of domestic rabbit sightings and traced them back to the same property. “Council understands the source of the rabbits is a local resident, who is keeping the animals on his property,” they said in a statement. “Council is working with the resident to have the rabbits removed.” Queensland has been facing mounting pressure to change the law, which some residents deem “ridiculous.” — Read it at The Guardian

Carrie Fisher’s French Bulldog Holds Vigil for Her

December 27, 2016 at 09:55PM by
>br> Actress Carrie Fisher, best known for her iconic role as Princess Leia in “Star Wars,” is reportedly in stable condition in a Los Angeles hospital recovering from a “cardiac episode” during a flight from London on Friday. Fisher has been touring to promote her new memoir, “The Princess Diarist.” On Friday night, her service dog Gary, a French Bulldog, “tweeted” a photo of himself staring out a window with the caption “I’ll be waiting right here mommy.” The dog, who helps Fisher cope with her bipolar disorder, is always by her side. He became a celebrity, too, when he accompanied her on interviews promoting last year’s movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” On Sunday, Fisher’s mother, legendary actress Debbie Reynolds, tweeted that her daughter was in stable condition. — Read it at People Pets

Elderly Dog Adopted for Christmas

Christmas came one day late for Holly, a 17-year-old dog who was sadly surrendered to Dallas Animal Services just a few days before the holiday. A few short hours after the shelter shared the “very sweet” deaf dog’s story on Facebook Monday, they had an update. They shared a photo of her contentedly sitting in her new owner’s lap by a Christmas tree! The deaf dog will be starting the New Year in a loving new home. “Holly's had a bath, a walk, a snack, a chew and now a power nap. Cheers to 2017!” her adopter posted Monday night, with a photo of her curled up in a comfy bed. — Read it at Dallas Animal Services’ Facebook

Study: Cheetah Faces Risk of Extinction

A new study finds there are only 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild, and that the species has been driven out of 91 percent of its historic range. The researchers say the dramatic decline means the cheetah should be listed as an endangered species. “Given the secretive nature of this elusive cat, it has been difficult to gather hard information on the species, leading to its plight being overlooked,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Sarah Durant. “It is likely to be much more vulnerable to extinction than was previously thought." The authors are calling for urgent new conservation efforts to save the cheetah. The study by the Zoological Society of London, Panthera and Wildlife Conservation Society was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. — Read it at Phys.org

Dramatic Rescue for Dog on Christmas Eve

Technical rescue teams in Washington State came to the rescue of a dog who got separated from his owner during a slick hike on the Rattlesnake Ledge Trail on Christmas Eve. The Pit Bull could be heard but not seen after falling down a slope and getting stuck on a ledge. It was too slippery for him to get back up, and he needed some help. Seattle Mountain Rescue and Washington State Animal Response Team managed the “very icy conditions” to reunite the 4-year-old dog with his relieved owner. — See photos at WASART’s Facebook

Shelter Celebrates Empty Kennels for Christmas

With the help of some generous donors, a Colorado animal shelter was able to waive its adoption fees for dog and cats over 5 years old for the holidays — and cleared out its dog kennels for two days in a row. Last week, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region posted a video on Facebook of its staff and volunteers cheering in the empty dog kennels, because they’d all been adopted out to happy homes in time for the holidays. “Seeing so many pets find wonderful new homes is what makes it all worthwhile for us,” said the shelter’s community relations manager, Gretchen Pressley. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Our 6 Favorite Animal Rescue Stories of 2016

December 27, 2016 at 11:42AM by
>br> They lived through very different ordeals, including being trapped in a well, swimming desperately for help and enduring the rubble of a devastating earthquake. But as we put together a list of our favorite rescued animals from 2016, we noticed one thread they each have in common: They’re all amazing stories of survival.

We’re recounting their tales — and filling you in on a few updates — below.

Hero Officer Saves Dog Hit by Train

If it hadn’t been for Amtrak Police Officer Kevin McMullen, it’s unlikely “Miracle” Molly would have made it. McMullen got a call from dispatchers in January saying engineers had spotted a dog in the Baltimore train tunnel system. McMullen tracked her down just in time. The mini Pit Bull had lost a hind leg and more than half of her blood. The officer rushed her to the BARCS shelter, where she had lifesaving surgery. When he visited her a week later, Molly clearly remembered her hero and smothered him with grateful kisses. Despite already having three other dogs at home, McMullen’s girlfriend, Claire, recognized their strong bond, and they added Molly to their family. In an update last month that the shelter shared on Facebook, Claire said that Molly and McMullen now visit schools to teach children how to safely interact with dogs. — Read it from BARCS Baltimore via Facebook

Cat Found Swimming in Lake

Image: Splash rescued from AZ lake

Denise Vhalos was out for a ride on a pontoon boat in an Arizona lake with her boyfriend in October when they were approached by two people on WaveRunners — who’d found a cat in the water. Vhalos, who has two cats of her own, didn’t hesitate to take the gray-and-white cat in. She named the cat Splash and warmed her up with a beach towel before giving her the guest room at her house. With the help of her veterinarian, Vhalos nursed the shocked cat back to health. Splash is “extremely loving” with Vhalos, but she’s making slow progress in getting used to the other two young cats in the house. Vhalos continues to try to find Splash’s original owner but tells us, “As for now, little Splash is safe, has her own room, toys to play with, her very own scratching post, litterbox and water bowl to play in. She also has an adopted sister and brother that seem very interested in getting to know her.” — Read it at Arizona’s 12 News

Dog Trapped for 9 Days in Earthquake Rubble

When a couple in Villa San Lorenza a Flavione, Italy, returned to what was left of their home after an August earthquake that killed 300 people, they started calling for their Golden Retriever. Despite nine days of being buried in what remained of their home, Romeo barked in return. Firefighters helped them dig through the debris to get to their dog and pulled him out safely. The inspirational rescue was deemed a “sign of hope” by the newspaper Latina Quotidiano. — Read it at ABC News

Dog Falls Overboard From Ferry

In August, passengers and crew on board an Island Queen ferry headed to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, from Cape Cod were surprised to spot a Spaniel about a mile offshore. The ferry started to circle the dog, and two Coast Guard officers on board attempted to rescue her — but the dog was scared by the size of the 125-foot vessel and kept swimming away from it, the company said in a Facebook post. So the captain sounded the horn five times as a danger signal, and a recreational boater arrived on the scene to help. The ferry passengers and crew cheered as the boaters pulled the dog on board. It turned out that the dog, Chesney, had fallen off of another passing ferry, and her family was alerting the captain at the time that she was located. Luckily, she was reunited with her relieved family later that day. — Read it at the Cape Cod Times

Lost Lab Survives 27 Days in a Well

Image: Bruno in wagon

Bruno, a 7-year-old chocolate Labrador Retriever, was missing for nearly four weeks when his family discovered him trapped at the bottom of a 10-foot well — thanks to one of his family’s two other dogs. They were out for a walk near their Saskatchewan, Canada, home in October when Esme, who’s also a Lab, stopped and refused to move. As it turned out, she was showing them the spot where Bruno had fallen into the well. Bruno’s owners, John and Cindy Billesberger, got the emaciated dog out of his predicament and rushed him to the vet. After a month of treatment at the veterinary hospital for dehydration and deep rashes, Bruno finally got to go home in November. From the updates on Bruno’s Facebook page, it looks like he’s still getting used to being part of the pack again, and he’s enjoying lots of snuggles and TLC from his people. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Heroic Shelter Dog Rescues Cat

Leopard, a 6-year-old Shar-Pei mix, was out for a walk with a volunteer at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in Ohio in November when she suddenly stopped in front of a sewer grate and wouldn’t budge. The volunteer listened closely and heard the faint sound of a kitten’s cries coming from below. The volunteer called for help, and deputies and other shelter volunteers saved the kitten from the drain. The kitten has been adopted and is staying at the home of a shelter volunteer. And now Leopard has her own happy ending. A longtimer at the shelter, the hero dog was adopted on Dec. 2, just in time to spend the holidays in the loving home she deserves. “She came in the house and sniffed over everything and then did a playful little dance,” her new owner reports. “So cute and such a sweetie pie.” — Read it at Ohio’s Fox 6 Now

K9 Unit Surprises Girls With Puppy

Just over a week ago, the Payne family was devastated when their German Shepherd was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident in front of their Tennessee home. Now, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, which was heartbroken by the story, has stepped in to help the grieving family. Their K9 unit worked to find them a puppy, and surprised the Paynes’ three daughters, ages 5, 7 and 9, with her. The girls thought they were at the sheriff’s office for a K9 unit demonstration and meeting their newest recruit last week, but they were thrilled when they were told they could bring the German Shepherd home. The sisters named their new puppy Jolly, and she’s helping to bring them a Merry Christmas despite the loss of their beloved dog Beau. “It's just a simple gesture that made a huge impact on those kids,” said Lt. Chris Harris, commander of the K9 unit. The girls spent the next day playing and cuddling with Jolly. “I don't know if she understands she can walk anymore,” Harris joked. — Watch it at USA Today and read it at the Commercial Appeal

World’s Oldest Gorilla Turns 60

Colo, a Western lowland gorilla, made history when she turned 60 years old on Thursday. The first gorilla to be born in human care, Colo has spent her life at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio. Colo was abandoned by her mother when she was born, and was raised by her keepers. She first broke the world record as the oldest living gorilla in 2012, when she turned 56. She has quite a legacy: she’s mom to three, grandmother to 16, great-grandmother to 12 and great-great-grandmother to three young gorillas. Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered in the wild. — Read it at Live Science

Study: Grazing Reindeer Can Help Ease Climate Change

A new study finds that while feeding on shrubs, wild reindeer herds in Norway raise the level of surface albedo, which is the amount of the sun’s energy the Earth reflects back into space. Their grazing reduces the height and number of shrubs, leading to a higher albedo. That results in a cooling effect on the climate. “Most of the arctic tundra is grazed by either domesticated or wild reindeer, so this is an important finding,” said the study's lead author, Mariska te Beest. The findings were published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. — Read it at Seeker

Keepers at the Adelaide Zoo in Australia started celebrating the holidays early with the arrival of a critically endangered white-cheeked Gibbon baby on Dec. 10. The infant is the fourth offspring of doting parents Viet and Remus. “The baby is absolutely adorable and is looking strong and healthy, clinging tightly to mum,” said keeper Jodie Ellen. “Viet and Rhemus are incredibly loving and capable parents and it’s heart-warming to see the entire family caring for the little one.” The baby’s older sisters will play key roles in helping to bring up the youngest member of their family. — Read it at Zooborns

5 Year-Old Dog With Terminal Cancer Adopted in Time for Christmas

December 22, 2016 at 10:41PM by
>br> A 5-year-old dog who’s had a very hard life will spend what’s likely his last Christmas in a loving home. The Terrier mix known as Wiffle Ball arrived at the Richmond Animal League in Virginia with a severe case of heartworms and later came down with pneumonia. Once he was treated for those things, the shelter learned Wiffle Ball was also suffering from terminal lymphoma. The staff decided they just wanted to make the end of Wiffle’s life happy — and now that’s going to happen with a new family. Over the weekend, the shelter shared a photo of Wiffle headed home with a couple and their other dog. We hear Wiffle loves french fries and pup cups, and it looks like he’ll get all the treats — and love — he deserves after a tough year. — Read it at People Pets

Cop Saves Dog From Traffic

A police officer in Rose City, Arkansas, rushed to the rescue of a tiny Chihuahua he saw running around in the middle of a busy intersection on Monday. Wendy Peeks and her husband saw the officer put his lights on and stop his car, and grabbed their phone to videotape when they noticed he was trying to help a tiny dog. “It took a couple minutes to convince her to come to me, but once she did she was happy to be there,” said Officer Iradale Whitney. “I had to make sure she made it home for the holidays.” Peeks’ video went viral on social media, and helped to locate the dog’s owners. She will be reunited with them in time for the holidays. — Watch it at Arkansas Matters

Rare Baby Elephant Gets a Name

An endangered Asian elephant calf was born last weekend to 12-year-old mom Sundara at the Chester Zoo in England. Her whole family gathered around as Sundara gave birth to the baby girl and encouraged her to get to her feet. Minutes later, she was up and trying to nurse. The baby has been named Indali. Mom and daughter are doing well, officials said. “It’s a hugely positive event for the herd — not least for one-year-old Nandita who was experiencing a new arrival for the very first time,” said keeper Richard Fraser. Nandita is Indali’s half sister. “Having a new play mate around means that Christmas really has come early for her!” — See photos at the U.K.’s Chester Chronicle

Lab Rescued From Drainage System

Zeta the yellow Labrador Retriever barked and howled for two days last week before children playing outside in Nampa, Idaho, followed the noise to a drainage grate. They peered into the grate and saw the Lab’s sad face looking up at them. One of their parents called Nampa Dispatch, and animal control and the fire department quickly got her out of the drainage system. Thanks to her tags, she was reunited with her relieved family, who said now it “really will be a Merry Christmas.” Zeta’s owner shared her thanks to the first responders and the children who found her in Facebook comments about the rescue. “Zeta was SUPER excited when we got back with her,” wrote Laura Heather Fry. “After licking everyone and doing a doggie happy dance, she ate a HUGE meal and fell fast asleep. Poor girl was exhausted, but obviously grateful to be back home.” — Read it at the Idaho Statesman

Panda Destroys His Snowman

Last week, we were reminded just how much the Toronto Zoo panda Da Mao loves snow with an adorable video of him somersaulting in it. Now the zoo has another cute video of the playful bear “attacking” a snowman that the staff made for him. In security footage, the panda can be seen climbing on top of the snowman’s head before tumbling over, and dismantling it in the process. — Watch it at Today

Church Cat Evicts Baby Jesus From Manger to Take Nap

December 21, 2016 at 10:31PM by
>br> Pips the cat, who spends her days prowling around All Saints Church in England, recently found a cozy new place to sleep: in the baby Jesus’ manger in a Nativity set up inside the church. When children arrived recently to rehearse their Nativity play, they were surprised to find the doll playing Jesus on the floor, and Pips curled up in the straw. The cat was put outside for the rehearsal, but “we let her back in so the children could fuss over her during refreshments,” said the Rev. Christine French. French shared a photo of Pips napping in the manger on Twitter, and it went viral. — See more photo at People Pets

Researchers Find New Ocelot Kitten

For the first time in nearly 20 years, biologists using GPS tracking have discovered a new ocelot den on Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. And inside, they rejoiced at finding a 3-week-old male kitten. The researchers examined the endangered kitten, took photos and left the area as quickly as possible to avoid disturbing his 11-year-old mom. She returned soon after. There are seven known female ocelots at the refuge, and three of the others have recently been photographed with healthy-looking kittens following closely behind them. But this was the first den the researchers have found. — Read it from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Chicago Police Honor Dying K9

K9 Officer Rachel sniffed out explosives for the Chicago Police Department for 10 years, until she recently developed a rapidly spreading form of cancer. The dog had done some high-profile work in her career, including protecting the president and first lady. Minutes before Rachel was put down on Sunday, she was honored with a final call over the police radio. “All units standby,” a dispatcher said. “7323 canine Rachel. 7323 canine Rachel. No response for canine Rachel. This is a final call for Chicago Police Explosives canine Rachel.”  The department shared its condolences for Officer Chuck Kocanda, her partner, on Facebook. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Study: Canned Dog Food Increases BPA in Dogs

Researchers have found that even short-term feeding of widely available canned dog food lead to a significant increase of the chemical Bisphenol A in dogs. BPA is a widely used industrial chemical that’s found in many household items, including resins used to line metal storage containers like food cans. While the healthy dogs in the study did have minimal BPA in their blood when it was drawn as a baseline, their “BPA increased nearly three-fold after being on the either of the two canned diets for two weeks,” said author Cheryl Rosenfeld of the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The study was published in the journal Science of The Total Environment. — Read it at Science Daily

Elderly Dog Saved From Icy Pond

Firefighters in Fairfield, Connecticut, came to the rescue of a senior dog who was stuck on thin ice on Monday morning. Delilah, a 19-year-old Shepherd mix, wandered out onto an icy pond and couldn’t get back. Firefighters said Delilah’s owner did the right thing by calling for help instead of attempting to rescue the dog himself. When a firefighter stepped out onto the ice, it immediately broke. He was able to pull Delilah to safety using a rescue stick. The crew reminded citizens to follow the owner’s example and call 911 “if a pet or loved one falls through the ice.” — Read it at Connecticut’s WTNH

Browser the Library Cat Gets to Keep His Job for Life

December 20, 2016 at 09:54PM by
>br> Browser the library cat made international headlines last July, when the White Settlement, Texas, city council voted to ban him from the library where he’s resided for six years. After a backlash, he was quickly reinstated — and now he’s guaranteed the job for life. The councilman who tried to ban Browser, Elzie Clements, lost his reelection bid in a landslide last month, and even tried to ban the cat again at his last meeting, held last week. Instead, Mayor Ronald White named the beloved feline “Library Cat for Life.” Library staff members say patrons love Browser, who curls up next to children who read to him and enjoys stopping in a regular knitting class held in the building. “He’s such a gentle soul — people adore him,” said Lillian Blackburn, president of Friends of the White Settlement Library. “And if somebody does have an allergy, all they have to do is call the library and they’ll put him in a back room for a while, so they can come in. As far as I’m aware, there haven’t been any problems. Cats and books seem to go together somehow.” — Read it at People Pets

Overjoyed Dog Reunited With Owner

It was around Thanksgiving when a dog named Daisy escaped from her Jacksonville, Florida, backyard after someone accidentally left the fence gate open. The family searched for her every day for two weeks with no luck. Then, their babysitter found Daisy on the local animal shelter’s Web site. Seeing that Daisy would be at a big adoption event on Saturday, the man rushed to find her. Daisy may have been the one who spotted her owner first. Shelter worker Jennie Clutterback said she was shocked to look over and see Daisy jumping all over. Daisy had broken Clutterback’s heart at the shelter because she always looked so sad. “(I) thought, ‘Holy cow, she found someone she really likes,’” Clutterback wrote on Facebook. “It turns out this is her Dad!!” Daisy’s now happily back with her family. — Watch it at Florida’s Action News Jax

Study: Anxiety Can Give Dogs Gray Hair

Humans aren’t the only ones who can get gray hair when they’re going through trying times. Their canine companions can, too. A new study finds that young dogs whose owners rated them as anxious and impulsive were more likely to have prematurely gray muzzles than dogs who weren’t considered anxious. The researchers based their findings on the results of a 42-item questionnaire filled out by 400 Colorado dog owners. They focused on dogs aged 1 to 4 years old. The study was published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science. — Read it at Live Science

Tiny Kitten Rescued From Cold

A 5-week-old kitten weighing barely a pound was found hiding under a car by a family in Washington, D.C., recently. They noticed the adorable kitten’s right eye was swollen shut and got her to the Humane Rescue Alliance’s adoption center right away for help. The staff was able to open her eye with a warm compress and some medication, and they got her some much-needed food. She’s now “recovering nicely” in foster care thanks to the Good Samaritans who found her. — See photos from the Humane Rescue Alliance via Facebook

Keepers Raise Cheetah Sisters

Two cheetah cubs who were born on Nov. 19 at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are being hand reared because their mom stopped caring for them after their birth. A team of eight keepers has taken on the task of raising them, bottle-feeding them a formula specially designed for cheetahs. The sisters don’t have names yet, but their caretakers have been calling them Yellow and Purple due to the temporary identification markings on their tails. The girls are expected to try solids this week, and their bottle feedings will start to become less frequent. — See photos at Zooborns

Shelter Shaves Neglected Cat

After her owner went into a nursing home, a Pennsylvania cat got a serious makeover. A medical team at the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh shaved two pounds of matted fur off Hidey, who will now be cared for by a distant relative of the cat’s owner. “She suffered from severe matting (dreadlocks, really), the likes of which had been neglected for years,” said a post on the shelter’s Facebook page on Friday. But now, Hidey will “finally have a chance at a happy and healthy life.” — Read it at People Pets

Study: Horses Ask Humans For Help

Researchers from Japan's Kobe University have found that when horses encounter problems they can’t solve themselves, they will turn to humans for assistance. Hiding carrots in a bucket that the horses couldn’t access, the researchers watched as the animals looked at and even nudged their human caretakers, communicating their need for help to reach the carrots. The scientists suggest these attributes are evidence of a high degree of cognitive skill. The results were published in the journal Animal Cognition. — Read it at Seeker

Six Meerkats Born in Australian Zoo

Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia, welcomed its largest litter of meerkats ever in November. The six playful pups are being monitored by keepers and are just now starting to venture out into their habitat. “They are growing a bit slower than our two previous litters, but they’re still hitting all the right milestones and starting to show their own little personalities,” said keeper Courtney Mahony. — Read it at Zooborns

Kitten Causes Traffic Jam

A little kitten caused a big commotion during morning rush hour on a highway in Wellington, New Zealand, on Friday. “When we arrived there were five cars stopped in the fast lane, which was causing significant traffic jams,” said Sergeant Bruce Cook, who responded to the scene with another officer. “Our first thought was 'oh no, the kitten's caused a crash'. But fortunately it hadn't.” Instead, the backup was caused by Good Samaritans who had stopped to try to help the kitten. The police were able to charm him out of hiding after he took a liking to Cook. The kitten had no identification and the veterinarian believed it was a stray, so Cook decided to adopt him and surprise his three children when they got home from school that afternoon. He named the kitten Jam. — Read it at the New Zealand Herald

Owners of Cat Rescued From Train Found

There’s bittersweet news for the cat-loving conductor of a Canadian freight train who made headlines this week when he saved the life of a cat he found frozen under the engine of his train. Brian Slater was contacted Tuesday morning by a couple from Saskatchewan whose missing cat Tiger matches the description of the cat Slater rescued. Slater, who fell in love with the kitty he named Q for the train, said at first he wanted to “keep denying” that Q seemed to be Tiger, but that he’s “happy either way because I know he'll be taken care of." The cat’s owner, who’s a retired employee of the same railway, plans to take a train trip to Edmonton on Friday, and will bring the cat home if it is indeed hers. — Read it at Canada’s Guelph Mercury Tribune

Dog Survives Massive Tumor

Amazingly, Henry, an 8-year-old Retriever, is now healthy and happy after enduring terrible neglect. Back in June, he was found abandoned on a beach in Newport, California, with an enormous 42-pound tumor on his side. “Most vets that we’ve asked, and have been involved in his story, have never seen [a tumor] that big,” Newport Beach animal control supervisor Valerie Schomburg said at the time. In a press conference on Wednesday, police charged the woman they believe to be Henry’s former owner, Sherri Haughton, with several misdemeanors related to her handling of her dog. Henry’s surgery was paid for by donations and he’s now “a happy dog” living with a foster family, an animal control officer said. — Read it at People Pets

Adorable Tiger Cub Plays With Mom

A critically endangered Malaysian tiger cub delighted visitors at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo with her debut this week, as she scampered around her exhibit and wrestled with her mom. Named Bersi, which means plump, the cub was born to mom Bzui on Sept. 11. Her keepers say that since she doesn’t have any siblings to compete for mom’s milk, Bersi is larger than usual, weighing 5.85 pounds. “She likes to jump into the water, loves to tear up palm fronds and sneak up on mom,” zoo staff said. There are only an estimated 250 Malaysian tigers left in the wild. — Read it at WFLA and watch it at YouTube

Painted Dog Pups Get “Cheesy” Names

The keepers at the Cincinnati Zoo love cheese, and when they thought about the large variety cheeses there are, they decided to have some fun in coming up with names for a litter of 11 African Painted Dog pups. Born to mom Imara and dad Kwasi in October, the two boys have been named Nacho and Muenster, and their sisters are Bleu, Brie, Gouda, Queso, Colby, Swiss, Cojita, Mozzarella and Feta. The keepers use their unique color markings to remember who’s who while the pups learn their names. — See photos at Zooborns

Lost Kitten Takes Shelter in Barn

Amanda Egan was moving her family from Utah to Washington on Nov. 28, when a tire on her van blew out, causing it to roll over and land on top. Thankfully, Egan and her three young daughters were not injured, but her pets didn’t fare as well. Their dog, a Chihuahua and Pug mix, was tragically killed when she ran into traffic, and their 7-month-old kitten, Cleo, ran off. The devastated family stayed in Oregon for three days to regroup and search for Cleo before continuing on their way to their new home. Now, they’ve finally had some good news. It turns out that Cleo had taken shelter in a hay barn about a mile from the crash site. The barn’s owner spotted the kitten scampering into the rafters, and called the phone number on her tag. “They were so excited when I told them Cleo had shown up,” Egan said of her daughters, who are ages 5, 3 and 1. “Their mouths were wide open.” The Pendleton, Oregon, Animal Welfare Shelter is working on finding a way to get Cleo back to her family. — Read it at ABC News

Retiring Police Officer Wants K9 to Retire, Too

Cambridge, Massachusetts, Police Officer Peter Neal is retiring next month after 30 years of service, and wants to take his explosives detection dog with him. The problem is that Rumba, a highly trained yellow Labrador Retriever, is only 4 years old, so the department says he has lots of working years ahead of him and wants to reassign him to a new partner. Neal’s family has taken their request to allow Rumba to retire public with a Change.org petition that so far has nearly 2,000 supporters. “It is understandable that this may be a difficult transition for an officer, who likely has formed a unique relationship and bond on and off the job with their assigned explosive detection canine,” said Jeremy Warnick, a spokesman for the department. — Read it at the Boston Globe

Giraffe Born After High-Risk Pregnancy

A healthy female giraffe calf was born to 19-year-old mom Uzuri at the Blank Park Zoo in Iowa on Dec. 6. Uzuri’s pregnancy was considered high risk because she’s on the older side for giraffe moms. The baby girl, who was named Lizzy after a longtime zoo supporter, already stands at 6 feet tall and weighs in at 136 pounds. Uzuri gave birth to her first calf in 2001, but the baby didn’t survive, and she hadn’t conceived since. Her keepers were surprised by this pregnancy and are happy to report that mother and calf are doing well. — Read it at the Des Moines Register

Cat Rescued From Garbage Bag

Public works employees in Miami Shores saved the life of a cat who they found tossed on the side of the road in a garbage bag this week. The cat is recovering at a local animal hospital while Miami Shores Police investigate the case. Animal cruelty is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The cat’s rescuers have named him Kringle, and he’s being treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion. He will soon be put up for adoption, and the rescue is hoping he’ll have a loving new home in time for the holidays. — Read it at NBC Miami

Woman, Dog Fall Into Icy Pond

Cathy Medernach and her dog are warm and dry at home thanks to Medernach’s quick-thinking 8-year-old son. Medernach and her son, Caden, were out for a walk behind their Aurora, Illinois, home with Bailey on Monday when the 11-year-old Labrador Retriever spotted some ducks on a retention pond. She ran out onto the ice after them, and fell through. Medernach then ran up to her property and grabbed a canoe and a broom to use as an oar, and went out on the ice after the dog. “As soon as I took that first brush through, I fell in,” she says. With both his mom and dog struggling in the frigid water, Caden called 911. The dispatchers told him to yell for his mom to come back to the shore while they sent help. The fire department’s dive team arrived and had Medernach and Bailey out of the water within minutes. Study: Number of Bird Species Could Be Double What We Thought

Typically, experts believe there are 9,000 to 10,000 species of birds worldwide. But in a new study, researchers from the American Museum of Natural History argue that number is likely closer to 18,000. That’s because birds had been placed in various species based on which animals breed together, which the study’s lead author says is an outdated idea that’s hardly used outside of birds. The researchers instead used different metrics to assign species, such as plumage and color. In a random sampling of 200 species, they found almost two new species for each bird they examined. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. — Read it at Seeker

Young Humpback Whale Freed From Rope

After getting a report from a group of commercial fishermen about an endangered humpback whale who was trapped by a rope near the coast in Boston, rescue teams were able to reach the whale on Sunday to free it. The young whale, who was about 30 feet long, had been entangled in the rope for about a week. "While the prognosis for the whale is now much better, it will take time for it to heal," the Center for Coastal Studies said in a YouTube posting with video of the rescue. — Read it at UPI

Emotional Reunion Caught on Video

Iris Estrada Samaniego had an emotional reunion with her cat at a California animal shelter after a long search. “Something told her to check the shelter today and when she looked she saw a cat [that] looked just like her Diego,” reads a Facebook post by Estrada Samaniego’s sister Crystal Samaniego, who shared the video. “She came straight to the shelter after work and when we saw him we knew it was him.” Diego, Estrada Samaniego’s cat of 12 years, disappeared in 2015, and his owner feared he’d been attacked by a coyote. But something told her he was still alive. “You have no idea how long I’ve been looking for him,” a tearful Estrada Samaniego tells a shelter worker in the video. “My kids are gonna flip out … I knew he wasn’t dead.” She says she hopes the video, which has been viewed more than 3 million times, will “give others hope.” — Watch it at People Pets

Panda Happily Rolls in the Snow

Da Mao ecstatically welcomed the year’s first big snowfall at the Toronto Zoo on Monday. Security cameras caught the panda, who’s dad to 1-year-old twin cubs, somersaulting off his play structure and down a hill in his enclosure — and then climbing back up the hill for more fun in about 6 inches of snow. Later, the cubs followed in their dad’s footsteps, adorably frolicking in the snow. — Watch it at YouTube
