Shelter Dog on "Price Is Right" Gets Adopted

January 31, 2017 at 10:38PM by
>br> It’s Pet Adoption Week on “The Price Is Right,” and it started with a bang on Monday, when the show announced that the first dog it featured had found a home the day after the taping. Trinket, a small white dog with a funny little underbite, was adopted by Sherry Rehfeld. “When she jumped in my lap I knew she chose me. I didn’t have a chance to say no. She is doing just fine,” she said. The game show has long supported animal rights, and for decades, every show has closed with the line, “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” You can tune in to the CBS show all this week to see more adoptable pets. — Read it at People Pets

15-Year-Old Dog Finds a Home

British comedian Ricky Gervais made an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday to promote his new film, “David Brent: Life on the Road.” But as the anchors started their interview, he interrupted and said he wanted to focus on a more pressing matter. “I was here to talk about that but I’ve just discovered there’s a dog needs adopting, so I’d rather use my segment to get him adopted,” Gervais said as he petted the recently rescued Chow and Labrador Retriever mix. “I’m not leaving until we get a phone call this guy’s adopted. He was chained up for 15 years. Give him a life... He’s so loving. He’s had no life.” On Monday, he happily reported that Bear had found a home. “Great work everyone,” he tweeted with a selfie he’d snapped with the dog. — Read it at the Toronto Sun

Westminster Reveals 3 New Breeds

The Pumi, the Sloughi and the American Hairless Terrier breeds will get the chance to compete at the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York next month. The curious and energetic Pumi is a Hungarian herding dog. The Sloughi is an athletic ancient African hound and the American Hairless Terrier is an inquisitive, spunky breed who was developed in the South in the 1970s. They round out the 202 breeds and varieties set to compete in the prestigious show. Representatives of the breeds made their debut at the Garden in a preview of the show on Monday. — Read it from the AP via Yahoo

Bobcat Escapes From National Zoo

Last week, we told you about a red panda who escaped from the Virginia Zoo. Now, there’s a new escape artist to tell you about: a bobcat disappeared from the National Zoo in Washington on Monday morning. The staff is searching the zoo’s grounds and surrounding areas for Ollie. They set out food traps for the nearly 7-year-old female, who weighs about 25 pounds. "We very much believe that she will want to come back to her habitat,” said spokeswoman Johanna Watson. She warned the public not to try to approach Ollie if they see her, but to contact the zoo. — Read it at Smithsonian

Wayward Cat Goes Wild for Catnip Toys

This has got to be a cat’s dream come true. A runaway cat hit the jackpot when she wandered into a pet store in the Netherlands earlier this month, and discovered the catnip toys. Two videos show the delighted kitty writhing around on top of a shelf full of the toys as they spill over onto the floor. The store, Pets Place, said the cat’s owner eventually tracked her down and brought her home. — Watch it at UPI

Photo of "Police Pug" Wins Hearts on Internet

January 30, 2017 at 11:11PM by
>br> Last week, the Rochester, New Hampshire, Police Department shared a photo of a K9 it said was its last recruit: an adorable Pug. “Hercules has been trained on how to aggressively hunt down any loose treats that may be in the vicinity. Don't let the flat nose fool you,” reads a Facebook post with the little dog’s photo. “He also knows how to sleep all day no matter what the weather may be. He's a sucker for a belly rub and does not enjoy running.” Alas, the department later confessed that Hercules hasn’t officially joined the force — he’s a civilian who belongs to one of the officers and was visiting the station. But that didn’t stop the post from going viral and attracting lots of attention from owners of fellow Pugs around the world, some of whom shared their own “police Pug” pictures. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Cat Reunited With Owner After Ride

Raven Huang was bringing his cat, Gumbo, to be neutered in Brooklyn, New York, on Jan. 14, when the nervous cat escaped from his car and disappeared. It turned out that Gumbo had wedged himself into a car’s engine — and wound up 230 miles away. The family who he tagged along with heard him meowing when they parked outside a hotel in Queensbury, New York, and the Warren County SPCA was called to help free the tired and hungry 10-year-old cat. Luckily, Huang was able to connect with the SPCA through Facebook, and he was happily reunited with his cat on Friday. “Hey, welcome back, buddy,” Huang said as Gumbo cuddled with him. “Feels like a family member came back, and it’s really comforting that he’s okay.” — Watch it at New York’s News 10 ABC

Study: Dogs Prefer Reggae Music

Researchers in Scotland studied the psychological and behavioral affects of different genres of music on dogs at a shelter in Dumbarton. The researchers played reggae, soft rock, pop, Motown and classical music for the dogs. “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed, highlighting the possibility that, like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences,” said researcher Neil Evans. “That being said, reggae music and soft rock showed the highest positive changes in behavior.” — Read it at UPI

Mexican Border Wall Could Hurt Endangered Species

Experts are warning that countless animal species could be impacted by President Trump’s proposed wall along the Mexican border. More than 100 threatened or endangered species live along the 1,300-mile expanse where the wall would be erected. One expert from Penn State University said that large mammals were “confounded and not knowing what to do” after their daily movement was disrupted by the partial fences and walls put up under President George W. Bush’s administration. “Dozens of animal species that migrate freely across the international line in search of water, food and mates would be walled off,” according to a Facebook post from Alt National Park Service, an unofficial page run by employees of the National Park Service. — Read it at the Washington Post

Rescue Dog Searches for Littermates

Family reunions are a challenge for rescue pups — but Frito has done a great job so far of tracking down his siblings! Frito’s owner, Corie Gemmiti of Texas, adopted him from Texas Humane Heroes in October 2015. Gemmiti has been using social media to try to find the other six puppies from Frito’s litter so they can have a play date. They’ve found four of the pups, and are hoping to find the last two before their Feb. 18 reunion at the shelter. — Read it at People Pets

Meet the Rescue Dog Named for Mary Tyler Moore

January 28, 2017 at 12:07AM by
>br> The legendary actress who died this week at age 80 left her legacy in many ways — including in the animal rescue world. Mary Tyler Moore and fellow actress Bernadette Peters co-founded Broadway Barks, an annual cat and dog adoption event hosted in theater’s famed Shubert Alley, 18 years ago. Among the many dogs who’ve found homes over the years at the event was a Lab mix adopted as a puppy by Tony Sestito in 2011. Sweet Dog Surprises Foster Mom

At the end of a long week, an adorable video of a mama Pit Bull sweetly delivering each of her 11 puppies to her foster mom’s lap has wracked up more than 27 million views. Stevoni Doyle took Grayce, a neglected, pregnant dog in to her Utah home three weeks ago, through Rescue Rovers. On Sunday night, the 2-year-old dog gave birth to the 11 puppies — 10 boys and 1 girl. Apparently, the first-time mom thought she could use a little help with the large litter. As the puppies would cry, she would pick them up, one by one, and bring them to Doyle. Then, she’d maneuver in for a little comfort herself. Doyle, who’s fostered more than 100 dogs, was touched by Grayce’s unusual behavior and trust in her. “She’s the first one that has ever brought them over and been like, ‘here you go,’” Doyle said. She shared a video of Grayce bringing her puppies over on Facebook Monday, and it quickly went viral. Grayce and her puppies will be up for adoption once the pups are 8 weeks old. — Watch it at Utah’s KUTV

Zoos Jump Into Spontaneous #CuteAnimalTweetOff

This is a Twitter battle where we all win. On Wednesday, when the National Zoo Tweeted a photo of its newborn grey seal pup, Sarah Hill, a radio host from Norfolk, Virginia, dared her beloved Virginia Aquarium to up the ante with a cute animal of its own. They quickly joined the competition. After a little back and forth, several other zoos including Zoo Atlanta, the San Diego Zoo and the Bronx Zoo, jumped into the fray with their own cute pictures. “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the response,” said Hill. “It's so wonderful to take back Twitter for something positive. I thought maybe two or three zoos and/or aquariums would respond, but wow. I'm getting Twitter notifications from zoos around the world showing off their adorable residents. Best day ever.”  — See photos at ABC News

Troopers Rescue 103 Puppies From Overturned Truck

New York state troopers safely pulled 103 puppies from an overturned box truck on an upstate highway shoulder on Tuesday, officials said. The driver, from Missouri, was taking the puppies to pet stores in local malls when she lost control of the truck. Finger Lakes SPCA said the puppies were most likely coming from a puppy mill, but that they showed no obvious signs of abuse or cruelty and that while they “abhor puppy mills,” they unfortunately knew of “no means to legally confiscate animals only because there is a strong likelihood that a puppy came from one.” — Read it at the New York Daily News

Little Brown Dog Gets a Home

Somehow, a little brown dog knew who to go to for help when she was lost in North Carolina after Hurricane Matthew. She spotted a caravan of animal control workers who were sent to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, from Charlotte to save animals from the storm’s floodwaters. They were wrapping up their trip when the brown dog started following them relentlessly. Animal Control Officer Scott Kisch said they stopped and got out of the vehicle, and the pooch jumped right in. “I think it was her saying get me out of here, take me home,” he said. They brought her to a nearby shelter, and the staff there has tried for months to find her a home. Recently, they called Kisch and his coworkers at Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control to tell them the little brown dog still needed a home — and they decided to take her in, give her a job in their humane education department, and name her Charlotte. She arrived in her new namesake city this week. “This is definitely a happy ending,” Kisch said. “I wish it was happier and that she went back to her normal family but I’m glad she’s with people that are going to take care of her and love her and treat her right.” — Read it at People Pets

Beloved Golden Dies Peacefully

A Golden Retriever in Florida stole hearts around the globe when his people took him on a final wagon ride through town to be “loved on” back in October, when they learned he was losing his third bout with cancer. Workers at Lowe’s had helped them make the wagon so Maverick would be comfortable on what they expected to be one last special day. But Maverick held on for another four months, and thousands followed his progress on Facebook. His owner, Joey Maxwell, said that when he and his wife returned home from the theater on Saturday, the smiley dog “ate a big meal and playfully barked for more.” They left him in the living room to finish his second helping while they got ready for bed, and returned to find that the dog they’d adopted from a shelter eight years ago had passed away. “He had waited until we got home so he could enjoy one last meal with us and tell us goodbye. It was as peaceful and painless as could be,” Maxwell said. — Read it at CBS News

Study: Cats May Be as Smart as Dogs

Japanese researchers say cats performed just as well as dogs on certain memory tests. The study of 49 cats suggests they have episodic memory, recalling specific pleasant experiences such as eating a favorite snack. Dogs also show this type of memory. “Episodic memory is viewed as being related to introspective function of the mind; our study may imply a type of consciousness in cats,” said Saho Takagi, a psychologist at Kyoto University. “An interesting speculation is that they may enjoy actively recalling memories of their experience like humans.” The study was published in the journal Behavioral Processes. — Read it from the U.K.’s BBC News

Red Panda Disappears From Virginia Zoo

The Virginia Zoo is asking for the public’s help to find Sunny, a 19-month-old red panda. Sunny was in her habitat on Monday night, but couldn’t be found when her keepers arrived on Tuesday morning. They are hopeful she’s still on the zoo’s grounds, but they’ve been scouring neighborhoods around the zoo, and they’re asking those who live within a mile to check the trees in their backyards for Sunny. They’re asking anyone who spots her to take a photo and text it to their hotline, but not to approach her. — Read it at Yahoo News

Cold Elephants Get Huge Sweaters

With extremely cold weather hitting their home in northern India, the 20 elephants who live at the Wildlife SOS are keeping warm with Jumbo Jackets knit by animal lovers in the area. The pachyderms who live at the center are blind, disabled or recovering from abuse, and their rescuers want to ensure they don’t have to endure any more discomfort. “It is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme winter, as they are weak and vulnerable having suffered so much abuse,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-founder & CEO of Wildlife SOS, in a statement. Thanks to the kindness of the villagers, they’ll stay warm and cozy during the cold spell. — Read it at People Pets

Adorable Gray Seal Pup Born in Washington

At 33 years old, Kara became the oldest gray seal to give birth in a zoo when she had a baby girl just after midnight on Jan. 21. Keepers at the National Zoo are keeping a close eye on the pup, but said she appears to be nursing, moving and bonding well with her mom. This is the third pup for mom Kara and dad Gunther, who’s 26. On Tuesday, the pup weighed in at 37 pounds. Once she’s weaned, the pup will be introduced to other members of the colony. — See photos from the National Zoo

“Hero” Dog Wakes Couple to Blaze

A Texas couple has their 17-year-old teacup Chihuahua to thank for saving them from a fire that destroyed their home last week. Todd and Debbie Mills said they were asleep when the fire started in the kitchen, and smoke detectors failed to go off. “This dog, Bebe, barked real harsh and loud, and I knew something was wrong,” said Todd Mills. The Mills got out of the burning home but in the chaos, they realized their hero dog was still inside. Luckily, firefighters saved Bebe, who’s blind in one eye. “She’s our hero,” Todd said. “We lost everything, that can be replaced, but lives can’t. Even that dog, that’s our family.” — Read it at People Pets

Firefighters Rescue Deer From Ice

Puppy Saved From Storm Drain

Out in Arizona, it was a puppy who needed rescuing. Last week, an emergency animal medical technician from the Arizona Humane Society responded to a call from a Good Samaritan who heard a 10-week-old puppy’s cries coming from a storm drain. The rescuer was lowered 6 feet into the drain and crawled through the dark to locate the lost puppy. She wrapped him in a towel and brought him up to safety. Trotter’s mom was found waiting nearby, and both of the dogs were brought to the humane society, where they’re doing well. They’re expected to be up for adoption later this week. — Read it at ABC 15 Arizona

Baby Hippo Arrives 6 Weeks Early

The animal care team at the Cincinnati Zoo is providing critical care to a female Nile hippo who was born Tuesday, but wasn’t expected until March. The calf was just 29 pounds — about 25 pounds less than the lowest recorded birth weight for her species. “We are giving her fluids and keeping her moist and warm,” said the zoo’s Christina Gorsuch. “Her little system is underdeveloped, and getting her to a healthy weight will be a challenge. Vets and animal staff are doing everything they can to get her through this critical time.” The baby is drinking a combination of her 17-year-old mom Bibi’s milk and other supplements from a bottle. The team is hoping to get her strong enough to stand and be reunited with her mom. — Read it from the Cincinnati Zoo

Sheepdog Pups Buried in Hotel

Emergency workers pulled three fluffy white Sheepdog puppies from the wreckage of an Italian hotel on Monday — five days after it was buried in an avalanche. Firefighters nuzzled the adorable 7-week-old puppies as they carried them to safety. They were found in an air pocket in the Rigopiano Hotel’s boiler room, and brought hope to searchers who are still trying to locate more than 20 hotel guests and workers missing after the avalanche. Nine people have been rescued, and the death toll stands at seven. The puppies are the offspring of two Sheepdogs who lived at the hotel, Nuvola and Lupo. Thankfully, they escaped the avalanche and were found by a hotel worker on Friday. The puppies will be reunited with their mom and dad, but the hotel’s owner is still missing. — Watch it at NBC News

Rare Virus Linked to Pet Rats

Federal and state health officials in Wisconsin and Illinois are investigating an outbreak of the rare and dangerous Seoul virus, which has sickened at least eight people after they were in contact with infected pet rats. The virus can cause fever, severe headache, back and abdominal pain, chills, blurred vision, redness of the eyes, or rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Officials first found the outbreak when a home-breeder of pet rats was hospitalized in December in Wisconsin, and it was traced to other breeders as well. The CDC says this is the first time the outbreak has started in pet rats in the U.S. — Read it at ABC News

Ocelot Kitten Gets a Name

A cute ocelot kitten was born on Nov. 17 at the Buffalo Zoo to mom Ayla, 6, and dad Pedro, 12. Following a naming contest, the little guy now has a name of his own: Nico. The other three choices keepers gave the public were Javier, Pablo and Tacito. The Brazilian ocelots' kitten is their second offspring. Their first was born in 2013. Their species is becoming increasingly endangered due to human population growth in their native habitat, but they are still listed as “vulnerable.” — See photos at Zooborns

23 Panda Cubs Pose for Picture

The staff at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China attempted to get a class photo recently of the 23 panda cubs in its care. Red Panda Cuddles With Plush Toy

A 2-month-old red panda cub whose neck was injured while she was being carried by her mom at Australia’s Taronga Zoo is getting some comfort from a surrogate — and a stuffed animal that looks like her mom. Maiya spent her first five weeks with first-time mom Amala before keepers made the tough decision to intervene because of her injury. “She’s definitely a little survivor,” said Tamara Gillies, the keeper who’s Maiya’s surrogate mom. She clings to the plush toy panda while feeding and sleeping. “The soft toy gives her something with a familiar scent to snuggle and play with. A recent study finds that dogs and cats show grieving behaviors after a companion animal in their home dies. Based on surveys distributed at veterinary clinics and animal welfare organizations in New Zealand and Australia, the research finds dogs and cats who’d recently lost a companion were more likely to show more affection and demand more attention from their owners, and to seek out the deceased animal’s favorite spot. Dog owners also reported their pets ate less and not as fast, and slept more. Cats were reported to have increased the volume and frequency of their vocalizations. The study was published in the journal Animals. — Read it at the AVMA

The Rock Gets Adorable Interruption

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was interrupted from filming a Ford commercial in the cutest possible way — by a group of French Bulldog puppies. Johnson, who’s a dog lover and Frenchie owner, stopped everything to cuddle with the adorable little puppies. They’d been brought in by Seven Bucks Digital Studios, part of a production company Johnson owns, as part of an announcement that for the next three months, it will donate its ad revenue to Best Friends Animal Society to help it rescue animals. — Watch it at People Pets

Pup Recovers After Eating Knife

When 1-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Macie started making a squeaking sound, owner Irene Paisley thought she’d swallowed a toy. She brought Macie to the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals in Glasgow, Scotland, where an X-ray revealed that something much different was causing the puppy to choke: an 8-inch kitchen knife. Macie underwent a delicate surgery to remove the knife. “I've never seen an x-ray like Macie’s,” said PDSA veterinarian Dr. Emily Ronald. “She was extremely lucky to survive. Her saving grace was that she swallowed the handle-end first.” Thankfully, Macie had a quick recovery. “The morning after surgery, she was bouncing all over the place as if nothing had happened,” Ronald said. Macie has been healing well in the two weeks since her procedure. — Read it at the UPI

FDA: Skin Cancer Cream Can Be Lethal to Pets

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning this week that a cream used to treat skin cancer and abnormal lesions in people, called fluorouracil, can be lethal to pets. "People using this medication should use care when applying and storing the medication if they are also in a household with pets, as even very small amounts could be dangerous to these animals," the FDA said in a statement. The FDA has received reports of two dogs who died after consuming the cream, and five who got sick from it. The agency hasn’t received any reports of cats who’ve gotten sick from the cream, but warns they are also sensitive to it. — Read it from Live Science via Yahoo

Cat Recovers After Matted Fur Shaved Off

A Persian cat whose story of cruelty went viral has been making an amazing recovery after he was found in a basement covered in five extra pounds of matted fur. The Anti-Cruelty Society came to Sinbad’s rescue after getting a call from a utility worker who spotted the cat when he was working in the Chicago home recently. It took the rescue group hours to safely shave the cat, who was severely malnourished under all that fur. “After all that he's been through he's a sweet, loving cat. How can you say no to that?” said Elliott Serrano, a humane education specialist at the Anti-Cruelty Society who adopted Sinbad. — Read it at Wisconsin’s Fox 6 Now

January 19, 2017 at 10:31PM by

In the disturbing video, a trainer looks to be forcing a terrified German Shepherd into a pool of rushing water for a scene. The video then appears to show the same dog sinking as one crew member yells “Cut it!” and others rush to help the dog. PETA called for a boycott of the movie, which opens on Jan. 27. Movie sets with animal actors are monitored by safety representatives from the American Humane Association. Trapped Dog Survives 18 Hours in Ice Storm

January 18, 2017 at 10:43PM by
>br> A neighborhood in Missouri came together to save a missing Schnauzer mix who disappeared just before an ice storm last week. After Dillon somehow got past the invisible fence in his yard, his owners immediately turned to their friends and neighbors for help. With no luck Thursday night, owner Cindy Bess’ neighbor headed out into the icy terrain in the woods to look for Dillon — and found him with his leg stuck in a trap. “He had no way out,” and had been stuck in the cold for 18 hours, said Julie Drew. Bess took Dillon to the vet and found that he suffered only a soft tissue injury, but no broken bones. Colo Was First Born in Zoo

Less than a month after celebrating her 60th birthday, Colo the Western lowland gorilla has died in her sleep, the Columbus Zoo said Tuesday. Colo was born at the zoo on Dec. 22, 1956, the first of her critically endangered species to be born in captivity. She was raised by her keepers, and eventually became a mom to three, grandmother to 16, great grandmother to 12 and even great-great-grandmother to three. She first broke the world record as the world’s oldest living gorilla four years ago, when she turned 56. Colo exceeded normal life expectancy for a gorilla by more than two decades. “She was the coolest animal I’ve ever worked with and caring for her was the highlight of my career,” said assistant curator Audra Meinelt. “It was not just about what she meant for the gorilla community but for whom she was as a gorilla.” — Read it at NBC News

Foster Dog Credited With Saving Choking Toddler

A black Labrador Retriever is being called a “real-life Lassie” after racing to get his foster mom when her toddler got sick in the middle of the night and started to choke. Rufus started barking and tugging on the arm of Emily Gunnion to get her to wake up and come to the aide of 21-month-old Betsy. “Rufus saved Betsy, he was amazing,” Gunnion said. “I was so tired after being up with her and didn’t know what was going on. Rufus alerted me. He got half on the bed and was scratching at me and barking. I knew something was wrong.” Gunnion had only been fostering Rufus for a few days, and he was downstairs with her other dogs when the incident happened. Unfortunately, Gunnion says she can’t keep Rufus because she already has two other dogs. “Rufus has shown how amazing rescue dogs can be,” and she’s hoping to find him a deserving forever home. — Read it at the U.K.’s Mirror

Video of Giant Gator Goes Viral

A massive alligator strolled past tourists and waiting cameras at the Polk County Discovery Center’s reserves in central Florida recently, stunning the Internet. According to experts, the video is likely the real thing — and alligators really can get that big. Kim Joiner, who filmed the video and shared it on social media, estimated the gator to be about 12 feet long. The locals call the huge reptile “Hunchback.” Believe it or not, Hunchback isn’t even record size. The largest published size for an American alligator was one who was killed in Alabama in 2014 who was more than 14 feet. — Watch it at National Geographic

Students Raise Money for Stray Cat’s Care

Duke University students are coming together to take care of Peaches, a beloved stray cat who lives on their North Carolina campus. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a Duke student who hasn’t met or heard of Peaches, the friendly calico cat that lives behind Few Quadrangle, one of the Duke dormitories,” says student Anna Li. “For students who are stressed out from school and missing their pets back home, this provides so much needed therapy and stress relief. Sometimes it’s even hard for me to get a minute with her because there’s always someone out there petting her!” Li and fellow student Anna Matthews set up a Go Found Me page for Peaches’ veterinary care after fearing she seemed worse for wear after a recent snowstorm. The fund more than doubled its goal of $300 to $780 in less than a week. The students say the additional money will be used to help other stray cats who’ve taken up residence on campus. — Read it at People Pets

Keepers Raise Playful Cheetahs

Two cheetah sisters are being raised by the animal care team at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The cubs were born on Nov. 19, and the team intervened because their mom wasn’t caring for them after their birth. The staff says the girls are very active and play almost constantly, except for the brief catnaps they sneak in during the day. Known so far as Yellow and Purple, for the temporary identification markings on their tails, the cubs had been confined to a large playpen. But they now have full run of the nursery room, which has been “kitten-proofed” for their safety. The cubs are now eating ground meat and will soon be weaned from the formula supplement they still receive. Yellow and Purple are being trained to be animal ambassadors with the zoo. — See photos at Zooborns

Study: Infant Marmosets Outgrow Baby Talk With Parents’ Help

Another hand-reared baby is helping researchers understand speech development in marmosets. Scientists observing monkeys who’d been rejected by their parents found that the little ones needed their parents’ direct feedback to grow out of making baby noises. While they innately developed vocalizations of adult marmosets, they mixed them in with sounds that are typical of infants. “It seems that developing the repertoire available to them heavily depends on direct feedback mechanisms much like our own,” said researcher Dr. Steffen Hage. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications. — Read it at Science Daily

Crew Saved Pup From Blaze

Back in October, firefighters in Asheville, North Carolina, rushed back inside a burning house after hearing there was still a puppy inside. Hex was unresponsive for the first 20 minutes after they got her out of the house. They gave her oxygen, and she finally came around and gave a little wag of her tail. She was only 2 months old at the time, and suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. After months of surgery and recovery, the many groups who helped Hex survive celebrated her last week — including the firefighters who saved her. Hex’s family was unable to continue caring for her, but she will be adopted by an employee of the Animal Hospital of North Asheville who has helped care for her for months. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Queen Elizabeth May Adopt 2 More Dogs

The 90-year-old old monarch has been surrounded by beloved Corgis for 70 years, but she has said that as her current pets pass away, she wouldn’t replace them because of her age and the demands of having puppies. However, there may be a couple of exceptions. Reports say Queen Elizabeth has spent the last two years quietly helping a friend, former royal gamekeeper Bill Fenwick, as a dog walker for his Corgi and Bichon Frise. Fenwick, 95, died last week, and the queen is said to be considering taking the two dogs in if no one else in Fenwick’s family is able to do so. Berlin Zoo’s Polar Bear Cub Shines

Last week, the animal care team at the Tierpark Zoo in Berlin got its first close up view of a polar bear cub born to mom Tonja on Nov. 3. During the cub’s five-minute exam, veterinarians were able to determine the baby is a boy. “The little one did really well and was very curious,” said zoo director Andreas Knieriem. “Holding such a little polar bear in your arms is always a really special experience.” The cub was 26.5 inches long and weighed just over 10 pounds. Now that they know the cub’s gender, the zoo is working on coming up with a name for him. They’re working with a local radio station and newspaper to collect suggestions before Feb. 1, and a jury will decide the “loveliest and most suitable name” for the cub. — Read it at Reuters

With a week left to go before she moves out of the White House along with her family, the Obama’s younger Portuguese Water Dog had a bad day on Monday. Sunny, apparently bit an 18-year-old girl who was a guest of the first family, when she tried to pet the dog.

The president’s physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, thought it was necessary to close the wound with a few stitches. The girl’s name hadn’t been released, but she posted photos of the gash above her cheekbone on social media.

“Who’s a Good Boy?”

If you have a tendency to talk to puppies like they’re babies, in a high-pitched, slow voice, there’s good news: they like it! Researchers had 30 women look at pictures of dogs and puppies while recording the cheerful things you might say to them, “Hi! Hello cutie! Who's a good boy? Come here! Good boy! Yes! Come here sweetie pie! What a good boy!” They then played the recording over the loudspeaker at a Manhattan animal shelter while dogs were playing, and found that puppies were most responsive to doggy speech. “[N]ine out of the 10 tested puppies responded more to puppy-directed speech than to human-directed speech, by reacting more quickly, looking more often at the loudspeaker and approaching it closer and for longer periods,” the researchers wrote in their study. For older dogs, the dog-directed speech didn’t seem to have any more of an effect than a more normal, human-directed tone. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. — Read it at Fox News

New Primate Gets a Star Wars Name

The scientists who discovered a new species of primate in Asia named it the skywalker hoolock gibbon, in part because the Chinese characters for its scientific name translate to “heaven’s movement” — and because they’re big “Star Wars” fans. Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker in the films, was quick to respond to the homage, Tweeting “So proud of this! First the Pez dispenser, then the Underoos & U.S. postage stamp... now this! #GorillaMyDreams #SimianSkywalker #JungleJedi.” The new gibbon species is an average of 32 inches tall with no tail and weighing about 13 to 15 pounds. One of the workers dug the kitten out and put him in his jacket to warm him up. “The kitten really responded to him, wanted the loving,” said Sue Knight, of CARMA Cat Rescue. They went to a nearby store for food, and heard about CARMA. A volunteer rushed the kitten, who’s been named Ajax, to the shelter for treatment. The little guy has been making a great recovery. “He’s a gorgeous little kitten, just adores being loved and hugged and purrs,” Knight said. He got a visit from his rescuers on Wednesday, and already has a forever home lined up once he’s healthy. — Read it at The Toronto Star

Orangutan “Kisses” Pregnant Visitor’s Stomach

Morgain Cole Abbott, 27, was moved to tears at the Colchester Zoo in Essex, England, last month, when Rajang the orangutan noticed her pregnant belly and sweetly gave it a kiss from the other side of her glass enclosure. Abbott, who’s expecting her second child in March, had heard that Rajang likes baby bumps, and stopped to visit him on a trip to the zoo. The tender exchange was caught on video. “The moment was absolutely amazing,” Abbott said. “I felt like we had a real connection.” Rajang has kissed at least three other pregnant women’s bellies at the zoo. — Watch it at Today
