Penguin Sports Adorable New Look

When a little Adelie penguin at SeaWorld Orlando began to lose feathers recently, the park’s wardrobe department stepped in to help. Penguins have short, broad feathers that keep water away from their skin and insulate them from the cold. But sometimes they experience feather loss, even in the wild, leaving them susceptible to the elements. Lucky for Wonder Twin, the wardrobe department whipped up an adorable solution: her own wetsuit. And this new costume isn’t just for Halloween! Wonder Twin comfortably sleeps, eats and swims alongside her pals in her new jacket. — Read it at People Pets

Lost Cat Flown Home in Private Jet

Ninja the cat was on a cross-country road trip with her family from Florida to Colorado over the summer when she escaped from her crate and disappeared during an overnight stop in Wichita, Kansas. The 10-year-old kitty started living with a colony of feral cats, and the volunteer who regularly feeds the cats noticed Ninja’s unusually friendly nature. A rescue group picked him up months later, and discovered he had a microchip. They called his family, and an anonymous company offered to fly Ninja three hours home from Kansas to Florida on a private jet. Ninja was happily reunited with his family on Sunday. — Read it from Kansas’ Wichita Eagle

Boy Surprised by Pack of Sled Dogs

Ian Dustan, 10, suffers from an incurable condition called mitochondrial disease, which has contributed to organ failure and the debilitation of his neurological system. Ian has outlived doctors’ expectations, and a nonprofit rescue group helped his family arrange a special experience for him on Saturday. His favorite type of dog is a Husky, so with the help of the volunteer group Forever Husky, he got a visit from a pack of rescue sled dogs. Ian even got a ride around his grandparents’ yard thanks to the dogs, who he was thrilled to see. “It's something I know will mean a lot to him,” said Jaime Miceli, Ian's mother. — Read it at the Chicago Tribune

U.K. Cat Named the World’s Longest

Kelsey Gill knew her Maine Coon would be a big cat. But even when Ludo was just a kitten, Gill noticed he was the same size as Maine Coons who were much older than he was. Now, he’s been given the Guinness World Record title as the longest domestic cat alive. The feline, who lives in the U.K., measures 3 feet, 10.6 inches long. Gill says one of the benefits of having a big cat is that she can always find him. Despite his huge size, Ludo is still 5 centimeters smaller than the longest cat ever, Stewie, a Maine Coon who passed away in 2013. — Read it from Guinness World Records

Elephants Get Giant Pumpkins to Smash

Zoo animals want treats for Halloween, too! On Friday, the elephants at the Oregon Zoo got the chance to smash two pumpkins that were the right size for them. Lily and the rest of the pachyderm family pulverized two gigantic pumpkins grown by the Pacific Northwest Giant Vegetable Growers Club. They used their trunks and their feet to “squish the squash,” with one elephant even lying down on the huge gourds. — Watch it from the Oregon Zoo via Facebook

Pets Who Can't Wait for Halloween to Be Over

October 30, 2016 at 06:27AM by
>br>

A Halloween Message from Your Pets

Dear Humans,

You're going to have to explain Halloween to us because we just don't get it. So many things don't make sense  — do you really want to be scared? Why? And what's with the constant doorbell ringing? (We think that's pretty scary, honestly.)

But the part that confuses us most is the costume. You go around to all the other humans asking for treats, but you only get one if you're dressed up, right? Don't take this the wrong way, but we think you're making this begging thing much more complicated than it needs to be.

We get that you like to dress up (it's weird but whatever, you do you) — but do you have to subject us to wearing costumes? We honestly don't need fancy outfits to beg for treats. We're just fine begging naked. Trust us.

Still not convinced of our disdain for Halloween? Check out the slideshow below to see some of our fellow pets looking downright miserable in their costumes. (Please try to ignore the cuteness. We're miserable. We promise! Now where are those treats?)

Sincerely,

Your Faithful Furry Friends

Party Turns Rescue Mission

Groom-to-be Mitchel Craddock and his buddies were on a 5-day bachelor getaway in Tennessee when someone crashed the party. They were cooking bacon one morning when a friendly but skittish dog showed up at the door, but wouldn’t come inside. The guys named her Annie for little orphan Annie, and after seeing her around for a few days and feeding her, they noticed she was protecting an area in the woods. They investigated and discovered that Annie had seven well-fed puppies who were about 5 or 6 weeks old in a den. "We were proud of her," Craddock said. "She gave everything she had to those puppies." Annie and her pups — Brimmie, Rosie, Daisy, Knox, Gunner, Bear and Finn — were all adopted by the groom and his groomsmen or their relatives, and they live within a 5-mile radius of each other. — Read it at Michigan’s MLive

Veteran Sues Airline for Rejecting Service Dog

Former Capt. Lisa McCombs, who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, is suing American Airlines for exacerbating her post-traumatic stress by repeatedly refusing to allow her service dog to fly home to Mississippi with her from a Kansas airport. McCombs and her lawyer wouldn’t comment on the pending litigation, but a 35-page legal brief details how McCombs says the airline staff wouldn’t let her through security on Sunday or Monday with her chocolate Labrador Retriever, Jake, despite providing the required forms of documentation. She says American Airlines eventually came through with a flight for her, but humiliated her during her travels. "We appreciate and thank Ms. McCombs for her service to our country," an American Airlines spokesman told the Army Times. — Read it at the Army Times

11 Endangered Pups Emerge From Den

A big litter of African wild dog pups has ventured out of their den at Australia’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The 11 rare pups are the second litter born to mom Kimanda and dad Guban on August 25. African wild dogs can have litters of up to 18 pups. “Kimanda is being a very attentive and nurturing mother,” said keeper Genevieve Peel. The pups’ older siblings are pitching in to help, too, bringing them food and babysitting. “The pups are now nine weeks old and continue to grow in confidence,” Peel said recently. The pups and the rest of their pack now spend most of their days out on exhibit. — See photos at Zooborns

Lost Cat and Owner Reunited

A tuxedo cat who’d been missing for more than 10 years is back home with his owner in Calgary after being identified by a faded tattoo on his ear. Owner Krista Sylvester was amazed to hear that Phoenix had been found, and was reunited with him on Thursday. “I was a little bit shocked … I never thought I’d see him again,” Sylvester said. Phoenix was found on the streets but appeared to have been cared for and was well fed. Sylvester believes someone else may have taken Phoenix in for the last 10 years. Although she’s happy to have him back, she said she’d be willing to work something out with them if they recognize him and contact her. — Watch it at Canada’s Global News

9 Puppies Rescued From Texas Roadside

A woman who found a cooler on the side of a road in Texas Friday was shocked when she opened it and found nine puppies huddled inside. The Good Samaritan called the Hunts County Pets Alive rescue, which came and got the 4-week-old puppies. Amazingly, all nine puppies — five boys and four girls — survived and are recovering well. “They are eating great and playing,” said Dr. Karri McCreary of Vet Ranch. “They are fat little chunky puppies.” The pups are all now up for adoption through the rescue. — Read it at Inside Edition via Yahoo

Firefighters Rescue Hiding Kitten

A feisty little kitten was finally found after a Florida woman stopped her car three times to investigate. The woman first noticed a stray kitten in her yard in the morning, and then heard what she thought were cries coming from the engine compartment of her car. She pulled over to check, but didn’t see anything. She heard it again while sitting in traffic, so she stopped at a Tarpon Springs fire station, but firefighters didn’t see anything either. But when she started to drive away, she heard the sneaky kitten again, and turned around. The firefighters heard it, too, and removed a wheel and part of the wheel liner — and found the stowaway inside the fender well. The grateful woman took the kitten in and named him Fender. She thanked the firefighters on Facebook and said their little rescue is doing well. — Read it at Florida’s Fox News 13

Former Puppy Mill Dog Goes Toy Shopping

Katarina, a 10-year-old Yorkshire Terrier who spent her entire life in a cage at a puppy mill, just discovered one of the joys of life after being rescued: visiting a pet supply store. In an adorable video shared by Mississippi’s Hub City Humane Society, the excited dog hops in and out of toy bins in disbelief at all of the choices. Katarina is in a happy foster home for three months while she’s being treated for heartworm disease, gets dental treatment and is spayed. The rescue is looking for a loving foster home for an older male Maltese, too, who came from the same puppy mill. — Watch it at People Pets

Loyal Dog Rescued From Curb

For a month after his family moved out of their Detroit home, Boo waited for them, along with the furniture they left on the curb. Concerned neighbors brought him food and water, but the loyal dog refused to budge. That’s when Mike Diesel of Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue stepped in to help. He spent 11 hours working to gain Boo’s trust by keeping him company and feeding him treats. He returned the next day with McDonald’s for Boo, and Boo allowed him to put a collar on him. Eventually, he felt comfortable enough to give up his vigil for his family and leave his old home with Diesel. The sweet dog is now in a foster home and enjoying visits from his pal while the rescue group works to find him a forever home. — Read it from Inside Edition via Yahoo

Cat Found “Swimming for Her Life” in Lake

Good Samaritans came to the rescue of a gray and white cat who was found swimming desperately in the middle of an Arizona lake on Saturday. A woman on a wave runner first pulled the cat out of the water, and called to Denise Vlahos, who was out on a nearby pontoon boat with her boyfriend. Vlahos, who has two cats of her own, said she would take the soaking kitty in. She tried to warm her up with a beach towel, and when she got home, the scared cat crawled “straight under the bed” in her spare bedroom. Vlahos says it’s “most definitely a miracle she’s survived,” and she’s trying to find the lost cat’s family. — Read it at People Pets

Manatee Sets World Record

At 68 years old, Snooty now officially holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest manatee living in captivity. The manatee has been living at the South Florida Museum since 1949, when he was brought in as an 11-month-old calf. Most manatees in the wild don’t even make it to age 10, so Snooty is quite the elder statesman. The museum staff credits the “intelligent” and “personable” manatee’s long life to the controlled environment he lives in with two other sea cows. — Read it at Seeker

Critically Endangered Rhino Born

A rare 103-pound Eastern black rhino was born on Sept. 12 to dad Jubba and mom Imara at the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. The critically endangered baby boy is one of 57 of his species North America, and there are believed to be only about 740 of the animals left in the wild. Their numbers have dropped drastically due to illegal poaching for their horns. The calf’s parents have had two other offspring, including a female named Kapuki in 2005 and a male named Kiano in 2010. Kapuki had her own first calf in 2013. — See photos at Zooborns

State Trooper Rescues Drowning Deer

Workers at a home in Harmony Township, New Jersey, called police when they found a deer struggling in a backyard pool on Friday. The New Jersey State Police said in a Facebook post that they “don't necessarily teach recruits in the academy how to rescue drowning deer, but we do teach them how to think on their feet and adapt and improvise when a peculiar situation presents itself.” And that’s what Trooper Dwayne Phillips did. He pulled the deer out by his antlers, saving him from drowning. The exhausted buck lay by the side of the pool for some time. Once he was recovered, he got up on his own and ran off. “Great job troop! #Attaboy,” the department wrote in the Facebook post. — Read it at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley Live

Ryan Lochte Wishes His Dog a Happy 8th Birthday for the Third Year in a Row

October 25, 2016 at 09:44PM by
>br> Maybe being 8 for Ryan Lochte’s dog is like being 39 for Jack Benny — he doesn’t want to reveal his real age and will just be 8 every year? On Sunday, the Olympic swimmer tweeted happy birthday wishes for his Doberman, Carter, who he calls his son. But he raised some eyebrows because he said the pooch was turning 8 — for the third year in a row. Lochte has since deleted this year’s Tweet and replaced it with one wishing Carter a happy 9th birthday, which would line up with what he’s previously said was his date of birth, Oct. 23, 2007. Of course, the Internet caught wind of the snafu before he could make the switch, and had plenty of jokes to make about it. Actor Rescues Dog in China

While shooting his latest film, British actor Orlando Bloom came to the rescue of an abandoned dog he found injured in the streets of Shanghai, China. Bloom, 39, known to be a dog lover, was working on Smart Chase: Fire & Earth, when he found the dog, and documented her rescue on social media. “This lil’ girl,” he wrote with a broken heart emoji with a photo of her injury. He immediately got her to a local veterinarian — where he assisted in her care. A short video shows the Lord of the Rings star helping to carefully shave her fur and bathe her, even telling the vet when the water was too hot. By the end, the sweet dog was resting peacefully while wearing an E-collar. We’re sure Bloom’s own 13-year-old dog would be happy to know he’d helped this fellow canine get on the road to recovery. — Read it at Yahoo News

Cat Swallows 27 Hair Ties

When Mowglie, a 10-year-old Bengal cat, was throwing up and generally not feeling well, his owner took him to the San Francisco SPCA. The vet decided to do exploratory surgery, and found that the cat apparently had an affinity for hair ties: a whopping 27 of them were found in his stomach. The vet said Mowglie could have been eating the ties over a long period of time before there were enough in his stomach to cause him this trouble. The ties were removed in the surgery, and Mowglie is expected to make a full recovery. — Read it at San Francisco’s KRON 4

Study: Noise Can Affect How Animals Use Scents

New research finds that noise from humans can have a detrimental impact on an animal’s use of scent, putting them at a greater risk of being attacked by predators. Scientists from the U.K.’s University of Bristol used recordings to show that mongooses in South Africa had a harder time detecting predator feces when road noises were played. Even after they did detect the feces, they took in less information from the smell and were less vigilant when the additional noise was present, making them more vulnerable to danger. The study was published in the journey Current Biology. — Read it at Science Daily

Giraffe Moves in Extra-Tall Trailer

A 2-year-old Masai giraffe was transferred this week from the Santa Barbara Zoo to the Oregon Zoo in Portland. Buttercup, who’s 12 feet tall, made the 1,000-mile journey to his new home in an extra-tall trailer equipped with a video camera so keepers could make sure he was safe inside. Once he arrived, Buttercup was given access to an indoor space and a walled-off section of the yard. In a video of his arrival, the majestic animal poked his head out of his trailer and took it all in before stepping out to explore — and get a snack from an encouraging keeper. He’ll spend the next month adjusting to his new home and getting to know his new companions, Bakari and Desi, before he meets visitors at the zoo. — Watch it from the Oregon Zoo

Lab Survives 27 Days in Well

Bruno, a chocolate Labrador Retriever, disappeared from his home in Saskatchewan, Canada, last month. His owners, Cindy and John Billesberger, searched desperately for him for four weeks until Oct. 14, when they were out for a walk with their two other dogs. That’s when yellow Lab Esme stopped in one spot and wouldn’t budge. It turned out that she was standing near an abandoned 10-foot well — and her pal Bruno was trapped inside. They got Bruno out and rushed him to the veterinarian. He was in rough shape — dehydrated, skinny and suffering from deep rashes from the wet environment. But the 7-year-old dog has defied expectations and is doing “much better” this week, said the family. “He’s pretty goofy ... he got in ‘trouble’ today for chasing a cat in the [vet] clinic, which they were happy to see,” said the owners’ daughter, Jill Desautels. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Gorilla Birth Surprises Keepers

Keepers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park discovered a new Western lowland gorilla in the troop when they arrived for work on Wednesday morning. The critically endangered, 4-pound baby girl was born to mom Kokamo. The keepers were able to examine the mom and baby and found they were both doing well. Kokamo is an experienced mom — the baby is her seventh offspring — and the staff reports she’s been very protective and attentive. — See photos from the San Diego Zoo

Hero Dog Saves Owner From Fire

Neighbors say Andrea Bulat survived a blaze that consumed the first floor of her Philadelphia row house thanks to her 10-year-old dog, Che. “The dog's really protective of her,” said neighbor Anthony Daly. “If you go past her house it's 'Bark, bark, bark, bark!' and that kind of stuff.” But when Che’s barking woke neighbors up at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, they knew something was wrong — and saw flames coming the home. Firefighters found Che lying on top of Bulat, and they were both unconscious. “The dog stayed on her chest the whole time, which prevented her from being burned totally,” said another neighbor, Adele Butler. Bulat was rushed to a hospital for treatment and is in critical condition. Her loyal dog was resuscitated by firefighters and is being treated for smoke inhalation. Vets are hoping Che will pull through, but recovery may be difficult at his advanced age. — Read it at Philadelphia’s ABC 6

He’s just enjoying the heck out of every moment and making people laugh without trying,” Banaszak said. Party on, Garth! — See photo at Today

George Clooney Spotted Carrying His Dog Up Stairs

When you’re a Basset Hound with famously stubby legs, some steps can be challenging. In a sweet moment captured on camera, actor George Clooney swept his 5-year-old rescued Basset, Millie, off her feet and gave her a lift up the steps to his trailer. Millie was keeping Clooney company on the set of his upcoming movie, Suburbicon. Clooney and his wife, Amal, adopted Millie almost a year ago from the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society. — See photo at People Pets

Bao Bao, a female panda who was born at Washington’s National Zoo, will leave for the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China early next year, the zoo announced Thursday. The zoo has an agreement with China to send offspring from its adults, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, back to the home country to breed. Now 3 years old, Bao Bao was the first surviving panda to be born at the zoo since 2005. Her older brother, Tai Shan, left for China in 2010. Bao Bao leaves behind a 1-year-old brother, Bei Bei. “We are sad to see her go, but excited for the contributions she is going to continue to make to the global giant panda population,” said the zoo’s Brandie Smith. — Read it from Reuters via Yahoo

Ailing Senior Dog Gets Happy Days

An Indiana shelter with a soft spot for seniors is making life better for a Golden Retriever with terminal cancer. The staff at the Humane Society of Johnson County picked Howard up from a nearby shelter about a month ago, and he was found to have several tumors. “We don't know what his life was like before but we wanted to make sure it had a good ending," said office manager Pam Self, who adopted Howard and brings him with her to the shelter. She and her coworkers put together a bucket list for Howard with some little things they thought he would enjoy: being a firehouse and police dog, starring in a parade and going out for a cold treat. They’ve been sharing his end of life adventures on Facebook. Next, they plan to take him out to dinner and get him a canine massage. But the staff says the item on the list that’s most important to Howard is to raise $10,000 on his GoFundMe page to help other senior animals in need. — Read it at the Indy Star

Study: “Mean Girl” Meerkats Make Twice the Testosterone

A new study from Duke University finds that female meerkats can produce twice the testosterone as males, who have more of the hormone in other species. Female meerkats with naturally high levels of testosterone and related hormones are more likely to be leaders, but they also tend to be big bullies — swiping food from the females beneath them or banishing them if they become pregnant. Dominant females tend to live longer and give birth to 80 percent of the surviving litters, the researchers said. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports. — Read it at Phys.org

Dog Missing 10 Years Found

Erika Slovikoski was taking her own dog for a walk in the San Francisco area Tuesday when she heard a dog’s cries for help. She found a 12-year-old Pekingese without a collar stuck on the side of a steep hill. Thinking the dog had been missing for a few hours, she brought her to San Francisco Animal Care and Control. That’s where her microchip was scanned and her owners were contacted. It turns out that Mooshu had actually been missing for 10 long years. “So much time, I hope they enjoy saying hi again,” Slovikoski said. Mooshu’s owners are traveling out of the country but were delighted to hear the news that she was safe. Mooshu is staying with a friend of the family until they return and can be happily reunited. — Read it at ABC 7 Chicago

Zoo’s Nanny Dog Honored by City

One very special animal at the Cincinnati Zoo was honored at City Hall this week for his work in comforting orphaned baby animals. Blakely, a rescued Australian Shepherd, has had a particularly busy year, playing the role of surrogate to five cheetah cubs at the zoo who lost their mom. Like most parents of toddlers, he’s now focusing on teaching the cubs the difference between fighting and playing. Impressed by Blakely’s selfless acts, the city of Cincinnati issued a proclamation declaring Tuesday Blakely Day. Sounds like he deserves it! — Read it at People Pets

Deputy Adopts Kitten He Rescued

A tiny black kitten is free after a slippery situation in Florida. Last week, Seminole County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony McDaniel and other authorities responded to a call that a woman needed help getting a stray kitten out of the door panel of her Dodge truck. The kitten was caught in the door hinge, and was being pinched each time the door moved slightly. McDaniel had the idea to use baby oil to grease the kitten up, and then he slipped right out of the hinge. The woman who called for help took the kitten in — but her other cats weren’t happy with that idea. When she posted on Facebook that she was looking for someone to adopt the kitten, McDaniel and his family jumped at the chance, and named the little guy Dodge. — Read it from the Seminole County Sheriff via Facebook

Study: Monkeys Make Tools They Don’t Use

Researchers have observed capuchin monkeys in Brazil deliberately breaking stones and unintentionally creating flakes that resemble tools created by Stone Age hominins. But the flakes appear to just be the byproduct of hammering the monkeys do, rather than tools they intend to use. Otherwise, the researchers said it’s unclear why the monkeys break the stones, but it may be to extract minerals from them. They never saw them use the flakes. They said the behavior raises “important questions too about the uniqueness of early hominin behavior.” The study was published in the journal Nature. — Read it at Phys.org

Florida Zoo Cares for Baby Turtles After Hurricane

The Brevard Zoo in Florida is rehabilitating 74 baby turtles rescued from the Space Coast after they were washed ashore by Hurricane Nicole. Most of the turtles are loggerheads, and there were a few green turtles mixed in. The tiny turtles were eating bits of plastic instead of the food they needed to grow when they were rescued. “When we get strong storm events, we'll see turtles that are weakened wash back to the beach,” said the zoo’s Melanie Stadler. “Right now, the whole East Coast is inundated with washbacks.” — Read it at Florida Today

Dog Caught in Hunt Trap Rescued

A stray black Lab mix puppy named Nittany is recovering after surgery to amputate her leg, which was severely injured when she was found with a hunting trap caught on her leg in Pennsylvania. Volunteers with the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society spent two days trying to catch Nittany after she was spotted with the trap on her leg. Once they got ahold of her, they immediately got her help. She had her surgery yesterday thanks to donations to the Humane Society, and will be headed back to the shelter to recover today. The shelter says the “very loving girl” is in good spirits, and thanked the community for their support — including the person who anonymously sent her flowers. Several people offered to adopt her in Facebook comments about her plight. — Read it from the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society via Facebook

Adorable Rhino Born in Iowa

A critically endangered Eastern black rhino was born on Oct. 11 to mom Ayana and dad Kiano at the Blank Park Zoo in Iowa. The baby girl weighed 80 pounds at birth. She’s healthy — and never lets her mom out of her sight. “It’s so great that the baby is a female, because the black rhino population tends to be skewed toward male,” said Susie Ellis, executive director of the non-profit International Rhino Foundation. The Eastern black rhino is endangered due to poaching of their horns, and there are believed to be fewer than 1,000 left in the wild. — Watch it at the Des Moines Register

Dog and Cat Pair Romeo and Juliet Need Each Other

Romeo the cat and Juliet the Miniature Schnauzer were found huddled under a car together in San Diego. A Good Samaritan brought the duo to the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, where they “immediately showed they didn't want to be separated, and they physically tried to stay together,” said shelter administrator Amanda Mills. The shelter normally separates dogs and cats, but these two were “lovesick” without each other. “Romeo got kind of sick, pretty depressed. He wasn't eating well, and he was lethargic and didn't want to play. Even his coat and fur weren't in good condition,” Mills said. So, the staff made special accommodations to put them together. “As soon as Romeo saw Juliet again, he just perked right up. The cat finally started playing and eating again.” The shelter is now trying to find a home for the bonded pair together. — Watch it at Virginia’s 13 News Now

Stray Kitten Interrupts the News

A homeless kitten wandered onto the set of a live morning show broadcast on Turkish television recently, surprising host Kudret ÇelebioÄŸlu. The kitten hopped right up on the news desk and walked toward the host’s computer. ÇelebioÄŸlu took the opportunity to encourage his viewers to adopt homeless cats. “As you know, winter is coming and cold weather is passing through,” he said. “It's an unexpected guest, [but] we should cuddle him. We should open the doors to stray cats and give them water and food [...] We all should take care of them somehow.” ÇelebioÄŸlu and his coworkers fed the kitten and gave him a warm place to sleep — and one studio employee decided to give him a permanent home. — Watch it at The Dodo

Homeless Pit Bull Is So Happy to Be Rescued

October 19, 2016 at 05:03AM by
>br> Some dogs are timid and afraid when Hope for Paws, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit animal rescue organization, comes to rescue them. But not Brutus.

The friendly brown and white Pit Bull had been living on the city streets, while kind mechanics were providing him with food. They knew he needed shelter, though, so they called the rescue group for help.

Experienced rescuers Eldad Hagar and Lisa Arturo arrived with treats to win him over — but it didn’t take much. The video of the rescue, below, shows how the sweet dog quickly accepted their food, and then their love.

They named the gentle giant Brutus, and he didn’t hesitate to hop into the car on Arturo’s lap when he was invited. Then, he proceeded to smother both of his saviors with thankful kisses. In the video, Hope for Paws says this was their easiest rescue mission ever.

The delighted dog has now been cleaned up and is ready to find a forever home.

Baby Elephant to the Rescue

Ever since he saved her life last year, Darrick Thomson has been one of Kham Lha’s favorite people. So, when the baby Asian elephant thought her pal was struggling in the river at the Save the Elephant Foundation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, she raced into the water, sheltered him with her body and gave him her trunk to hold on to. Luckily, Thomson wasn’t really in trouble. He was calling to Kham Lha from the water, and she interpreted his calls as distress cries. Her sweet save was caught on a video that’s now gone viral. “Since [Thomson] rescued Kham La, he spent time to heal her from the mental [anguish] and has shown love to her,” said the staff at Save the Elephant. “It's not long after that, she [made a] strong bond with him, and accepted him to be part of her herd.” — Watch it at CNN

Study: Female Chimps Wait to Climb Social Ladder

A new study finds that while male chimps move up the social ladder by directly challenging higher-ranking members, females wait until a higher-ranking female dies for their chance to move up. The researchers from Duke University say that’s likely because females have so much at stake. “You may get injured. Your offspring may be killed, if you have a little baby. Finding that females actually do not fight for rank tells us how costly these challenges must be for them,” says study co-author Anne Pusey. The study of 100 chimps in Tanzania's Gombe National Park was published in the journal Scientific Reports. — Read it at Seeker

Cat Poop Debate Rages in Hawaii

Two groups of animal advocates in Hawaii are at odds in an intense debate over contaminated cat poop from feral cats. Government researchers believe the feces from the many feral felines roaming around Hawaii is spreading a disease that’s killing the state’s endangered monk seals. A parasite common in cats that can cause toxoplasmosis is believed to have killed eight Hawaiian monk seals since 2001 — a large number relative to the species’ population, which is only about 1,300. Some conservationists have advocated for euthanizing stray cats, which outraged feral cat advocates. The matter remains unresolved in Hawaii. — Read it from the AP via CBS News

Puppy Involved in Wreck Found

Former NFL player Dennis Byrd was bringing a 10-week-old black Labrador Retriever puppy to his daughter’s home in Oklahoma on Saturday when he was struck and killed in a head-on collision. Byrd’s daughter, Ashton, was planning to give the puppy to her husband for their wedding anniversary. Willow disappeared after the crash, and members of the community searched for her throughout the night. On Sunday, she showed up at a nearby home, and the resident contacted the family. A family friend said finding Willow will give the Byrd family a glimmer of hope after the tragic accident. The family has been in Oklahoma City while Byrd’s 12-year-old son, who was injured in the crash, recovers from surgery, and they’ll soon be reunited with the little Lab. — Read it at Oklahoma’s KJRH

Viral Video: Dog Howls With "Zootopia" Wolves

October 18, 2016 at 04:42AM by
>br> This family’s German Shepherd wasn’t interested in the movie playing on the TV behind him — until something caught his attention.

When the wolves started to howl in a scene from the Disney animated movie, Zootopia, he perked right up, and didn’t hesitate to join in.

In a hilarious video first shared on YouTube over the summer, the pooch sat up and howled his heart out, even after the wolves on the screen were finished.

Once his work was complete, he settled right back down on the living room rug. But we’re thinking he might have a future in Hollywood!

Dogs Trapped 65 Feet Underground

Crews in Boxford, Massachusetts, brought in heavy machinery and worked for five hours on Thursday to free a family’s two dogs, who were stuck in an underground drainage pipe behind their home. “The little dog figured out that he could go in and come back out and the big dog followed him,” said Boxford Police Department Chief James Riter. Police, firefighters and workers from a nearby town used an excavator to dig 65 feet down to the pups. Winston, the smaller dog, managed to get out first on his own. Then, using a pipe camera, the crew was able to nudge the larger dog until he backed out of the pipe on his own. Five hours later, the Boxford Police Tweeted photos of the joyous dogs rolling around above ground. “Both dogs are now free and very happy to see each other! Great work by all,” the caption read. — Read it at ABC News

Rhino Gets Snout Stuck in Tire

National park rangers in Zimbabwe rushed to the aid of a white rhino who couldn’t eat or drink after getting his horn and snout stuck in a tire. The wildlife group Aware Trust Zimbabwe got a report about Mark’s plight on Saturday, and rangers found the bull trying desperately to free himself from the tire. When Aware’s veterinarians arrived, Mark was lying down, “looking decidedly dejected and exhausted from his ordeal on this scorching hot day.” They tranquilized Mark and worked with the rangers to yank the tire off of him. The rhino quickly recovered from the incident. — Read it at the Washington Post
