Dog Missing 6 Years Returns Home

Nearly seven years ago, the Montez family’s Terrier mix, Corky, escaped from their Texas backyard. They searched for six months before assuming the worst. But on Saturday, they got a call from the Humane Society of North Texas, saying the now-8-year-old dog had been found by a Good Samaritan — and he bonded with another special little dog on the streets. The second dog, named Captain by the shelter staff, has only one eye, and gets by with help from Corky. So, the Montez family had no qualms about bringing Captain home, too. “Half the day they nap and half the day they play, but whatever they're doing, it's always together,” said owner Jimmy Montez. “It's actually pretty adorable. It looks like Corky really took care of Captain when they were out in the streets. He always lets Captain eat first, and he'll even stand guard to make sure none of our other dogs bother him.” Montez said the family now feels “complete” with Corky and Captain at home. — Watch it at ABC News

Study: Having Connected Friends Helps Female Baboons

Researchers have found that female baboons reap the biggest benefits from friendships with baboons who themselves have close, stable bonds with other females in the group. This social networking is associated with greater offspring survival. “There seems to be a strong selective pressure for close, same-sex friendships in these baboons,” said Dorothy L. Cheney of the University of Pennsylvania. “You can easily imagine that, if you have a friend who herself has a lot of other close friends, you're indirectly connected to them and could derive benefits from those connections.” The study was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science. — Read it at Phys.org

Prednisone

Prednisone and prednisolone are glucocorticoids which decrease aggravation and restrain safe framework reactions. They are a few times more grounded than the anxiety hormone “cortisol” which is delivered actually in a pooch’s adrenal organs and are frequently utilized for regarding Addison’s malady as a part of which your canine’s organs don’t create enough cortisol all alone. Since they smother the resistant framework they are likewise successful in the treatment of hypersensitivities and are here and there utilized as a subsequent meet-up epinephrine when puppies have endured anaphylactic stun (an exceptionally serious unfavorably susceptible response).

What’s the distinction amongst prednisone and prednisolone?

Prednisone is really a “forerunner” to prednisolone. This implies once your canine takes prednisone it is changed over by the liver into prednisolone. Consequently, vets frequently offer prednisolone to canines who have poor liver capacity to keep away from the requirement for change.

Prednisolone is likewise the best decision when your canine can’t take prescription by mouth as it is viable when given as an infusion or notwithstanding when connected topically onto the skin.

Is It Safe?

Not all canines are fit for treatment with this drug. Some of the common side effects can be uncomfortable, and it is known to cause abortion when given to pregnant pets (which is likewise the case with different glucocorticoids). It ought not be given to any puppies under 6 months of age as the immunosuppressant properties could harm.

Treatment might be unacceptable for puppies with:

  • Systemic contagious contaminations (unless utilized as substitution treatment for Addison’s infection)
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (when infused intramuscularly)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Heart disappointment

At the point when mutts get a lot of glucocorticoid for drawn out stretches of time their body reacts by closing down its own particular characteristic creation. On the off chance that this happens the adrenal organs will decay and the pooch’s body will then battle to deliver hormones even after you stop treatment. This is the reason it’s best to utilize an each other-day dosing plan at whatever point conceivable.

Safety Guidelines

Here are some important reminders to help keep your dog safe:

  • Speak to a vet before giving this medicine to your dog
  • If possible avoid using this medicine until you have a diagnosis
  • Avoid treating cancer with this drug before chemotherapy begins
  • Notify the vet of any medication or supplements your dog is on
  • Notify the vet of any medical conditions affecting your dog
  • Avoid use in pregnant pets and those under 6 months old
  • Avoid live vaccines during treatment

After longer-term treatment it’s very important that you slowly wean your dog off of the drug instead of stopping suddenly. Stopping treatment suddenly could lead to Addison’s disease.

What Is It Used For?

Prednisolone and prednisone have a wide range of potential uses but are most often used for the treatment of Addison’s disease to supplement a pet with the glucocorticoids their own body is unable to create. Because of the drug’s ability to suppress immune system responses, they are also used to control allergic reactions and autoimmune conditions such as lupus and AIHA. Here is a larger list of the possible uses of prednisone:

  • Adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s)
  • Asthma
  • Cancer (some forms)
  • High blood calcium levels
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Skin disease
  • Arthritis
  • Shock

They are considered useful in the treatment of shock due to the ability of steroids to improve circulation.

Side Effects

Side effects from prednisone are common, but dangerous reactions do not occur as often when it is used correctly. Dogs who are taking immunosuppressive doses are more likely to suffer side effects. During treatment your dog may experience the following:

Common

  • Increased thirst (very common)
  • Excessive urination (very common)
  • Slower wound healing
  • Increased appetite
  • Infection

Less Common

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Behavioral changes

 Incidence Unknown

Call the vet immediately if you notice any of these signs.

  • Shortness of breath
  • Blood in stools
  • Kidney problems
  • Coughing blood
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Serious heart problems
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Addison’s disease
  • Allergic reaction

Study: Hummingbirds Wired to Avoid Collisions

Researchers from the University of British Columbia set up a tunnel and projected patterns on its sides to study how hummingbirds can fly up to 30 miles per hour without colliding with the objects in their path. Orphaned Baby Glider Gets TLC

Luckily, Boop the feathertail glider escaped injury when she fell from her mother’s pouch in Australia. Now, she’s one of the smallest patients at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Boop weighs less than 1 gram, and a team of specialized wildlife caretakers is feeding her a balanced milk formula through a very fine tube. “Two milliliters is plenty for this tiny patient!” the hospital explained in a Facebook comment. The feathertail glider is the world’s smallest gliding mammal. An adult will grow to be between 6.5 to 8 centimeters in size. The joey will be returned to the wild when she’s ready to survive on her own. — Read it from Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors via Facebook

Study: Traveling Broadens Chimps’ Horizons

A new study finds that chimpanzees who travel use tools more frequently. Chimps and the bonobo, a close relative, travel the same average distance as the chimps who were observed for the study, and they use a similar set of tools. Gorillas and most orangutans, however, spend significantly less time traveling per day and show limited or no feeding-related tool use. The team concluded that travel created an extra need for high-energy food, while the challenge of inaccessible honey created an opportunity for innovation in the chimps’ use of tools to get to it. Peanut Butter Vaccines May Help Save Ferrets

A new plan to save the black-footed ferret, which has been declared extinct twice, involves vaccinating the prairie dogs they prey on with an oral vaccine disguised as a peanut butter treat. The ferrets and the prairie dogs they prey on are threatened by the sylvatic plague, a devastating flea-borne illness. The ferrets can get the vaccine themselves through an injection, but that’s impossible to do with large populations of prairie dogs. This week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to test a prototype of a treat dispenser on an all-terrain vehicle and spread the vaccine treats to prairie dog populations in northeastern Montana. — Read it at National Geographic

Crowds Drive Goat to Tragic End

The drowning death of a lost mountain goat in Alaska is being blamed on a crush of people onshore who were trying to get its picture on Saturday. The goat’s presence in the city of Seward was unusual, as the animals usually stay above the timberline in remote areas. State troopers got calls saying the wayward animal was being harassed by people trying to photograph it. With nowhere to turn, the goat dove into the ocean, where it drowned. It’s the latest in a sad string of human encounters with wild animals that have ended badly for the animals. The most notable may have been the baby bison who died in Yellowstone National Park in May after tourists who thought it looked cold put the calf in the back of their vehicle. Officials are reminding people to give animals their space. — Read it at the Chicago Tribune
