American Airlines Apologizes for Kicking Boy's Service Dog Off Plane

November 30, 2016 at 11:10PM by
>br> Amy Weasel, her 11-year-old son Bryant and his service dog flew smoothly with American Airlines from Indiana to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a vacation last week. But on the last leg of their journey home on Thanksgiving Day, Weasel says a flight attendant and management asked them to get off the plane in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bryant has Dravet Syndrome, which results in seizures, and Chug, his Labradoodle service dog, is trained to detect the seizures before they happen. He goes everywhere with Bryant, including to school. When she planned their vacation, Bryant’s mom says she called American Airlines and submitted the required paperwork to bring Chug on board before their trip. But the group was still asked to get off their flight and was rebooked onto another flight leaving the next day to St. Louis, Missouri, which is three hours from their home. “It was just very unfortunate that this flight attendant was not trained in knowing how to accommodate people with special needs,” says Weasel. American Airlines apologized to Weasel in a statement and says it is “looking into the issue with PSA Airlines, the regional carrier who operated that flight.” — Read it at St. Louis’ KSDK

First Dogs Star in Christmas Décor

One last time, the first family’s dogs are a big part of the White House’s extravagant Christmas decorations this year. The first dogs have often inspired the White House’s Christmas displays during their years in Washington. This year, the photogenic Portuguese Water Dogs are portrayed with larger-than-life-sized replicas made from 25,000 yarn pom-poms. The Bo and Sunny likenesses in the East Wing hallway appear alongside dog-themed ornaments and toys like tennis and soccer balls. Miniature versions of the dogs playing in front of the giant gingerbread White House were on display in the State Room, and the pair even appeared in sugar cookie form on a platter with other treats during an event for military families on Tuesday. The dogs themselves delighted children when they helped Michelle Obama welcome the families to their home. — See more photos at the Washington Post

Injured Koala Returned to the Wild

Gracie didn’t hesitate to race up a tree when she was returned to the wild at Columbey National Park in Australia last week. The 4-year-old koala broke her hind leg when she was hit by a car. She was treated at Port Stephens Koalas in New South Wales, where she had a pin put in her leg and had to wear a cast for six weeks. “I reckon she’ll take off like nobody’s business,” her rescuer can be heard saying in a video of Gracie’s release. She was right. The koala immediately hopped out of her laundry basket and onto the tree. “Nothing wrong with your broken leg anymore, is there? You’re just fine … You’re home.” — Watch it at The Western Australian via Yahoo

Rare Lemur Born at Maryland Zoo

An endangered Coquerel’s Sifaka was born on Oct. 25 at the Maryland Zoo. The baby is the fifth offspring for 12-year-old mom Anastasia (Ana) and 14-year-old dad Gratian. “Ana is a very good mother and the baby is growing rapidly,” said the zoo’s Erin Cantwell. The baby’s gender isn’t yet known. “By December, the baby should begin to sample solid food and crawl on Ana’s back periodically. Before the New Year, when the baby is six to eight weeks old, he or she will begin to venture a few feet away from Mom, which is always nerve-wracking for us, but exciting for guests to watch.” — See photos at Zooborns

Homeless Pregnant Dog Rescued in Touching Video

A heartwarming new video shows the rescue of a protective mama dog from under a shopping cart where she was living in the Los Angeles area. Caring neighbors left her food and water but said she wouldn’t let them get close enough to take her in. The experienced rescuers from the non-profit Rescue from the Hart were called, and slowly worked to gain Bailey’s trust. They eventually were able to remove her from the area. Bailey’s rescuers cleaned her up and were there to help her when she gave birth to five puppies a few weeks later. She proved to be a great mom, and now all of her pups — and Bailey herself — have been adopted into happy homes. — Watch it at YouTube

Man Proposes at Animal Shelter

Kat Woodley thought she was being filmed for an adoption video last week at the SPCA in Erie, New York. A shelter worker asked her to double check her adorable kitten’s new tag to make sure it was correct, and that’s when the big surprise was revealed. Her new kitten’s heart-shaped nametag read, “Will You Marry Me?” Her boyfriend, Jerad Forsyth, soon appeared on one knee to complete the proposal. Apparently Woodley had her suspicions. “Oh I totally knew it,” she laughed as she accepted. Gandalf, the kitty, climbed up her shoulder and then snuggled with Forsyth, too. — Watch it at People Pets

Florida Dog Found 1,200 Miles From Home

Three years after Bella, a Maltese and Pomeranian mix, disappeared from her Florida yard, she was found wandering the streets in Paterson, New Jersey. Owner Bill Gerstein was shocked to get a call from the shelter two days before Thanksgiving, saying they had Bella. “I immediately, within 10 minutes was online and booked a flight,” he said. “As soon as I picked her up, she was like speechless. Shaking, tail-wagging, couldn’t even bark. Just in shock and amazement, as was I.” Bella was back home in time for Thanksgiving with her family, and his children are so happy to have her home, “her feet have barely touched the ground,” said Gerstein. — Read it at New York’s PIX 11

Experts Struggle to Save Endangered Key Deer

In the Florida Keys, an endangered deer species is facing an alarming new threat in a flesh-eating pest called the screwworm. Officials don’t know where the painful pest came from, but they’ve killed 130 deer — 13 percent of the population — in the last two months alone. Experts are working to treat the deer on the island chain with a medication to stop parasites. They’ve also put checkpoints in place so pets can be checked, in an effort to stop the screwworm from moving north, where it could more easily spread to other animals. — Watch it at Florida’s WJHG

Lion Cub Snuggles With Mom

An African lion cub was born on Oct. 11 at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California to mom Kiki and dad Chisulo. Kiki, an experienced mom, is “taking great care of the cub,” said the zoo’s Nicole Presley. The cub and his mom are bonding behind the scenes at the lion house, and looked quite cuddly in a recent photo shoot. After a naming contest, the zoo announced on Facebook Monday that the cub will be called Kijani, which means warrior. Keepers are monitoring mom and baby with cameras, and they’re likely to be out on exhibit when Kijani is between 8 and 12 weeks old. — See photos at Zooborns

Russell Brand Serenades His Dog

Although a serenade of the theme song from the classic TV show “Cheers” sounds sweet, Russell Brand’s dog Bear didn’t look completely thrilled when he sang it to him. In a video posted to the British comedian’s Facebook page on Sunday, the cute pooch whines and then barks at his singing owner. “Russell Brand annoys his dog by serenading him with theme tunes,” the post reads. You can judge for yourself about whether Bear enjoys the tune. — Watch it at Facebook via Russell Brand

Bei Bei Recovering From Surgery

The National Zoo’s 1-year-old panda cub was briefly reunited with his mom Saturday after undergoing lifesaving surgery on Friday. Veterinarians removed a mass of bamboo the size of a lemon that was blocking Bei Bei’s intestines. The bear started showing signs of discomfort on Thursday, including vomiting, not eating and sleeping more than usual. The blockage was found with an ultrasound on Friday morning. After he responded to his mom’s vocalizations on Saturday, Bei Bei’s keepers decided to reintroduce the two to help him settle down. While he was initially excited, he then nursed for 20 minutes and fell asleep with his mom. He’s beginning to eat soft foods — but his keepers will avoid giving him bamboo for the time being. — Read it at USA Today

Study: Dogs Remember What We Do

New research shows that dogs pay attention and remember our actions, even when the events don’t carry any particular importance. The researchers trained 17 dogs with a training method called “Do as I Do.” They were trained to lie down after watching a human action, including simple things like touching an umbrella or grabbing a purse. Then the researcher would say “Do it!” and the dogs would do what they saw the person do earlier. To do this, they’d have to recall what they’d seen the person do, even though they’d had no reason to think they’d need to remember it at the time. The study was published in the journal Current Biology. — Read it at Live Science

Dog Eats $1.18 in Change

A 2-year-old American Eskimo Spitz named Lucky lived up to his name last week when he survived after swallowing four quarters, three pennies, a nickel and a dime. His owner, Terri Luxmore, brought him to see a specialist at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Michigan after the lethargic dog’s bloodwork showed his liver was failing. From Lucky’s symptoms, Dr. Brian Young suspected he might be reacting to zinc, which is found in pennies made before 1982 — and is “extremely toxic.” He used an endoscope to remove the coins from Lucky’s stomach, and he is expected to make a full recovery. — Read it at Michigan Live

22-Year-Old Adopted Cat Loving Life

Tigger was abandoned at an animal hospital in Maryland when he was about 20 years old. But he’s spent the last year being loved on by his adoptive owners, Baltimore Ravens cheerleader Adriene Buisch and her boyfriend, Michael Trentadue. They were looking for a friend for their cat Stuart, and they fell in love with Tigger, and wanted to give him a home in his senior years. Tigger is suffering from kidney failure and has a large tumor in his belly, but he continues to put on weight and seems to feel well. So, he’s been living it up, and celebrated his 22nd birthday last week with a three-meat cake. “We can't believe we have gotten the chance to spend another birthday with our old man.... he's such an amazingly sweet, hilarious, and loving soul. He's one of the best decisions we have ever made,” his owners posted on his Facebook page. — Read it at Today

President Obama Makes Final Turkey Pardon

November 23, 2016 at 10:23PM by
>br> For the last time in his eight years in office, President Obama will pardon two turkeys at the White House today: Tater and Tot. President George H.W. Bush was the first to officially pardon a turkey in 1989, and at least one turkey gifted to the White House by the National Turkey Federation has been spared each year since then. While the White House asked followers on Twitter to vote on whether they thought it would be Tater or Tot who would be pardoned in the ceremony, reports say that both birds will be safe. After the 4-month-old turkeys officially get their presidential reprieve, they’ll head to a new life at Virginia Tech’s Animal and Poultry Sciences Department. — Read it at the Miami Herald

Cougar Kittens Head to Minnesota

A pair of puma kittens was found late last month outside Port Angeles, Washington, by a local resident. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife rescued the brother and sister after determining that their mom was not returning to take care of them. The male was 13 pounds and his sister was 11 pounds at the time. While the orphaned kittens have grown considerably since their rescue, they cannot be released. So, now they have a new home at the Minnesota Zoo. They arrived at the zoo last week and are settling in behind the scenes in quarantine before they make their public debut. — Read it at Zooborns

Study: Porpoises Adjust Heart Rate to Length of Dive

A new study finds that porpoises — and likely all cetaceans — consciously adjust their heart rate to match the length of their planned dive. “Until now, we knew that the heart rates of porpoises and cetaceans in general correlate with different dive factors, such as dive duration, depth and exercise,” said study leader Siri Elmegaard of Aarhus University in Denmark. “Now we can conclude that harbour porpoises have cognitive control of their heart rate.” Researchers said that if the animals’ concentration is disrupted by a sudden loud noise, such as shipping or sonar, it could prompt them to resurface too quickly, which can trigger potentially fatal decompression sickness and lead to stranding. The study was published in the journal Current Biology. — Read it at New Scientist

Linemen Save Cat From Power Pole

For nine days, Fat Boy, a black and white cat, sat on a 45-foot power pole in Fresno, California, without food and water. Finally, linemen with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. turned off the power to the pole — and 250 homes — and climbed up with a carrier to bring Fat Boy down to safety. “Sometimes we wait out cats on poles … 99 percent of the time, cats come down on their own,” said company spokesman Denny Boyles. “In this case, it’s been up there that long, we just made the decision to go ahead and go up there.” The cat was reunited with his 14-year-old owner, Andrew Perez, and immediately began eating. — Read it at California’s Sacramento Bee

Firefighters Rescue Kitten From Car

Margate-Coconut Creek, Florida, firefighters worked to find a skittish kitten twice on Tuesday. A woman dropped by a fire station in the morning, concerned that a kitten was stuck somewhere in her car. The crew found the kitten hiding in the undercarriage near a rear wheel. But once he was safely removed, it ran inside the station to hide, so firefighters had to find him once again. Were There Dogs on the Mayflower?

November 23, 2016 at 06:21AM by
>br>

Image: Mayflower istockphoto

If you were on a voyage to a new land, would you want your dog’s companionship and protection? There’s solid evidence that some of the Pilgrims did. There were at least two dogs on board the Mayflower when it left England in 1620, bound for the New World.

As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving, Vetstreet talked with Chris Messier, a living history interpreter who plays Master Jones, the captain of the Mayflower, on a replica of the historic ship in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

“I’ve been playing Master Jones for probably more than 10 years,” Messier says. “We meet a lot of children and they always ask about the animals on board. Dogs are the most certain answer I can ever give.

“There was a Mastiff and there was a Spaniel, and because they do interesting things they get written about” in history, Messier explains.

It wouldn’t be surprising for the canines to have joined their owners on the trip, he says, because the English and Dutch (some of the people on board were from Holland) clearly had a love of dogs, even back then. We know this because they often appeared in portraits and other paintings at the time. Popular types of dogs included Mastiffs, Hounds, Spaniels, Terriers and lapdogs, Messier says.

He says he’s convinced that his character, Master Jones, brought a dog along. That’s in part because Jones had been commanding ships for 27 years, and sailors were frequently given puppies as gifts in different ports, and also because there’s documentation that he’d been taken to court in England for illegally having hunting hounds when he didn’t have the required amount of land.

Cats Were on Board, Too

Dogs weren’t the only animals on the Mayflower. Messier says there’s also evidence that pigs, goats and chickens — as well as cats and rats — were on board.

Cats were commonly brought along on ships to catch the vermin. In fact, captains who were responsible for the cost of any spoilage could get a break on their costs if they had a cat on board, Messier says.

Felines were also considered good luck — and many sailors wouldn’t even make the trip if there wasn’t a kitty companion on the voyage. It was believed they could sense a storm was coming, giving the crew time to prepare.

Most of the cats on board were feral, but there are reports of sailors taming kittens to become pets, Messier says.

New World, New Dangers

The Pilgrims and their animals ran into newfound hazards in the New World — including wolves.

Messier tells one story about how the Mastiff and Spaniel, who belonged to John Goodman and Peter Brown, had a scary run-in with the predators. The English dogs had never seen wolves before and apparently thought they were also dogs, he says. They brought them back to their masters, who had a hard time defending themselves from the wolves.

Thankfully, the Pilgrims survived and the Spaniel is credited with chasing the wolves off.

Natives and Pilgrims Had Dogs in Common

Once the 102 people aboard the Mayflower arrived in America, they discovered that the Native Americans had dogs, too. In fact, it was the only animal that the two groups had in common, Messier says.

The Natives’ dogs would often be the first to be aware of the approach of the English if they attempted to ambush one of their villages. But the Natives only had small dogs, and the English sometimes used their huge Mastiffs to terrify them.

It’s believed that there were likely more dogs with the English settlers, too, because of accounts that they were used to help their masters with hunting. So it's fair to presume that, in 1621, when the Pilgrims gave thanks for a bountiful harvest after a year of sickness and scarcity, there were probably numerous four-legged friends crowded around the table, too.

Beloved dogs were often around dinner tables back in the Pilgrims’ native England, Messier recalls. If the dogs who arrived on the Mayflower were anything like typical dogs today, maybe they were looking for scraps when the settlers had their first Thanksgiving meal!

Pet Scoop: Blind and Deaf Puppy Rescued From Wall, Lady Gaga Gets a New Puppy

Puppy Pulled From Inside Wall

After their blind and deaf puppy had been missing for several days, a family in the Bronx finally heard a clue: whimpering coming from inside the walls of their home. They called the New York Fire Department for help in getting him out safely. Five firefighters responded and determined that the puppy had fallen through a hole in the wall of a bathroom in the home that was under renovation. Mustafa apparently then fell seven feet and got stuck between sheet rock and a pipe. They were able to remove a piece of the floor and pull him out, and reunite him with his relieved family on Friday. Amazingly, Mustafa didn’t suffer any injuries. “The little boy and his mom were incredibly grateful. It felt good, and we’re so glad the little guy is okay,” said Lieutenant Steven Lucchese. — Watch it from the FDNY via Facebook

Study Reveals Unique Structure of a Cat’s Tongue

New research finds cats have microstructures that look like tiny hooks on their tongues to allow them to pull snags and tangles out of their coats. It also has a tackiness that helps cats pick up their food, but the most important use of the tongue is as a grooming tool, the researchers said. “When the cat's tongue hits a snag, it pulls on the hooks, which rotate to penetrate the snag even further,” said Alexis Noel, a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech. “Like a heat-seeking missile for snags, the hook's mobility allows the cat to better tease tangles apart.” The researchers are scheduled to present their findings at the 69th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society's Division of Fluid Dynamics this week. — Read it at UPI

Real Voice Behind Singing Snake Discovered

For years, local folklore in the Amazon has held that the bushmaster, a deadly viper, can sing. But scientists now say that the venomous snake isn’t the one doing the singing. The calls attributed to the snake really belong to two types of tree frog, they said. The frog species measure about 2 and 3 inches long, and their calls often come from tree holes. The scientists say the tale of the singing viper was widespread, but it’s unclear how so many people came to believe the snake could hold a tune. The study was published in the journal ZooKeys. — Read it at Live Science

Kitten Rescued From Subway Tracks Gets Adopted

She lost a foot and part of her tail after being saved from the subway tracks in New York City last month, but Mathilda has gained a new home. Mathilda is “settling in nicely” after being adopted by the family who spotted her on the tracks near 42nd Street in New York, said Heather Denbow. Train traffic was delayed for more than an hour while the police worked to save the kitty. "Unadoptable" Sad-Faced Cat Gets Adopted

November 21, 2016 at 11:24PM by
>br> Ben Ben the cat has had a difficult life, and his face showed it. He was brought in as a stray at the British Columbia SPCA, and was suffering from several injuries, including a damaged ear and spine. “I fell in love right away,” said Sandy Windover, who works at an emergency vet clinic. After Ben Ben was transferred to the BCSPCA hospital, he was deemed “unadoptable” because of his condition and was slated to be put down — until Windover and her boyfriend stepped in. “We decided to adopt him because we believe everyone deserves a chance! He was so broken and sick and didn’t look like he’d ever been loved!! His face melted our hearts and we knew we had to take a chance on him!” He’s now looking comfortable and content in their home, and he loves to explore and meet new people, Windover said. Now, Ben Ben is using his Internet fame to help other strays who need medical help with a GoFundMe page. — See more photos at the Huffington Post

Paramedics Save 3-Week-Old Kitten

Miami firefighters battling flames in a duplex on Saturday afternoon were searching for victims when they came across a 3-week-old kitten. He was barely alive when he was brought to paramedics on the scene, who treated him and cleaned him up. The crew searched the area for a mother cat, but when they couldn’t find her, they decided to take Smokey back to the station with them. Miami Fire Rescue shared photos of Smokey on Facebook, and the next day, a mother and son who’d seen the story on the news arrived and adopted Smokey. — Read it at NBC Miami

Panda Twins Miss Their U.S. Treats

Mei Lun and Mei Huan, the first panda twins born in the U.S. to survive, are trying to adjust to their new life in China — but the transition hasn’t been easy. The 3-year-old cubs much prefer their American crackers to the bread that they get at their new home at Chengdu Giant Panda Research, and their keepers have had to mix the crackers with their other food to get them to eat. They’re also trying to learn Chinese. While they respond to their names, they’re still learning the Sichuan terms for commands like, “come here.” The twins arrived in China earlier this month from Zoo Atlanta, where they were born. It’s part of an agreement with the Chinese government that any babies born in the U.S. would move to Chengdu. — Read it at People Pets

Rare Painted Dogs Get a Doctor’s Visit

The animal care team at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans managed to examine 10 young African painted dogs in just one hour before returning the pups to their parents. They all passed the exam with flying colors, and officials determined their genders for the first time — five of the pups are males and five are females. The endangered pups were born on Sept. 11. The zoo plans to name them now that they know their genders. — See photos at Zooborns

Stolen Dog Returned to WWII Vet

A 93-year-old World War II veteran had an emotional reunion with his teacup Chihuahua, who’d been missing since Nov. 9. A boy from Roger LeClair’s California neighborhood said he saw a woman drive up and take Lola. Luckily, she was found not long afterward and cared for by a woman who found Lola while she was coaching at a nearby field. After hearing news reports about the missing 12-year-old dog, she returned her to LeClair on Saturday. “Oh sweetheart, my goodness,” LeClair said through tears as he hugged his beloved dog. “Oh I don’t know how to thank you,” he told the woman who found Lola. — Read it at Los Angeles' Fox 11

Sad Cat Looks Quite Content After Adoption

Ben Ben the cat has had a difficult life, and his face showed it. — See photos at the Huffington Post

K9 Loses Week-long Battle

Earlier this week, we told you about how two dogs gave blood to help save the life of a Boise, Idaho, police dog who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest during a manhunt on Nov. 11. After surgery to remove a lung, K9 Jardo was recovering well and seemed comfortable at home. But on Wednesday night, things took a tragic turn. Jardo was rushed back to WestVet Emergency Center when his handler noticed he was acting strangely. The 6-year-old Belgian Malinois died after going into cardiac arrest. “Jardo served our community and though we were blessed with these few extra days to share with him, he ultimately gave his life in the protection of fellow officers,” said Boise Police Chief William Bones, according to a Facebook post on Thursday. The department thanked the community for the hundreds of cards and letters that have poured in for Jardo, and said a memorial is planned for next week. — Read it at Idaho’s KTVB

Feds: Barrier Around Harambe Failed to Meet Standards

A federal inspection of the barrier at the enclosure around the gorilla habitat at the Cincinnati Zoo found that it was not in compliance with standards when a 3-year-old boy fell into the exhibit on May 28. Only a month before the incident, however, the barrier system was found to be compliant in a U.S.D.A. inspection, the zoo said Thursday. Harambe, an endangered 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was shot and killed in the incident to save the little boy. — Read it at NBC News

Excited Dog Reunited With Owner

Five months after he disappeared, Tucker the Collie was back in the arms of his owner, wiggling with excitement, wagging his tail and giving lots of kisses. When the Central Nebraska Humane Society found Tucker, one of his front legs was caught in his collar. Tucker sometimes has seizures, and it’s believed his leg was likely caught there during an episode. “What's even better than seeing the video of the reunion is being on the receiving end of those kisses!” said one of his owners, Lisa Widga, in a Facebook comment. “I am so lucky to be one of people who got those kisses! Tucker has a large human family that loves him very much! I am still so completely blown away over his coming home!” — Watch it from Good Morning America via Facebook

Polar Bear Caught on Video Petting Dog

A sweet viral video shows a polar bear in Manitoba, Canada, with an unlikely pal. David de Muelles, who shot the video, said he stopped his tour bus near a sled dog sanctuary when he saw the bear petting and nuzzling one of the dogs. “This big bear had just woken up from a cat nap and stopped right by the dog,” de Muelles said. “The bear then just started gracefully petting the dog like a human.” — Watch it at the Huffington Post

Viral Video: Dog Stumped by Bone on the Bottom of His Water Bowl

November 18, 2016 at 05:58AM by
>br> Sometimes, things look so close, but yet they’re so hard to reach.

In an adorable viral video, a dog tries repeatedly to get ahold of the bone he sees at the bottom of his water bowl, but he can’t pick it up — and he’s stumped. You see, the bone is just a painting.

We’re hoping the poor pup will figure this out quickly and that his owner will give him something else to satisfy him!

Although the video is funny, it’s important to point out that if the poor pooch continues to do this, his owner should invest in a new bowl for him, so he doesn’t get distressed.

Dog Finds Kitten in Sewer

Leopard, a resident at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter in Ohio, was out for a walk with a volunteer on Monday afternoon when she suddenly stopped in front of a sewer grate and wouldn’t budge. Soon after, the volunteer heard faint cries coming from below. The volunteer called for help, and deputies and other volunteers from the shelter were able to pull a small kitten from the drain. The cat is now staying in the home of one of the shelter’s volunteers. Leopard, a 6-year-old Shar Pei mix is still in need of a home, but it seems the attention from this story will help. There have been several inquiries about adopting her in response to the shelter’s Facebook post about her heroic act. — Read it at Fox 6 Now

Rare Whale Calls Recorded Off New York Coast

An acoustic buoy dubbed “Melville,” located 22 miles off New York’s Fire Island, recorded the telltale call of a migrating North Atlantic right whale on Monday. There are only about 500 of the species left in the wild. The buoy deployed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Wildlife Conservation Society monitors whales in near real-time in hopes of preventing deadly encounters between whales and ships. Melville has also surprised researchers by recording sei and fin whales over the last few weeks. North Atlantic right whales “mostly pass through the New York Bight during the fall on their migration to the waters of the southeast U.S., and again in the late winter on their migration back north to the Gulf of Maine — off Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine — and Canadian waters,” said WHOI scientist Mark Baumgartner. — Read it at Seeker

Emotional Reunion in Dallas

Jessica Urbina had an emotional reunion Monday night with Bam Bam, the Shih Zhu who disappeared from her Texas home four years ago, on Easter 2012. “I just never thought I'd hear anything from him ever again,” she said. Urbina and her family searched for Bam Bam for months with no luck. Two weeks ago, she got a call from an animal hospital in Las Vegas, asking if she’d lost a dog recently. She believes the dog, who’s now 7 years old, was stolen to be used in breeding. Bam Bam will have a new friend at Urbina’s home: Pebbles, another Shih Tzu she got a few months after Bam Bam disappeared. — Read it at the Dallas Morning News

Bushes Bring Home Adopted Pup

Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, visited their local SPCA center in Texas this week to “thank them for their great work — and came home with a puppy,” Bush wrote on social media. A photo of the Bushes with their new family member, Freddy Bush, makes it easy to see why they couldn’t leave without the adorable little guy. “We already love him, and even our cats Bob and Bernadette are finding Freddy’s charm futile to resist,” he said. During their years in the White House, the Bushes owned two Scottish Terriers, Barney and Miss Beazley. In his retirement, the former president has often painted his dogs, who passed away in 2013 and 2014. In his post, Bush encouraged others to adopt, too. “If you could use a little extra joy in your life, consider adopting a pet from an animal shelter or rescue group,” he wrote on Facebook and Instagram. — Read it at Today

“World’s Saddest Polar Bear” Moved Temporarily

Following months of outrage over the conditions Pizza the polar bear was living in at a mall in China, the “world’s saddest polar bear” has been moved back to the ocean park where he was born. The move back to where his parents live comes after more than 1 million people signed a petition to have the bear moved. Authorities say the move is temporary while his enclosure at the mall is renovated. But animal advocates are hopeful that the move will become permanent. — Read it at Fox News

Koala Visits Accountant’s Office

Maybe he needed a little help with his taxes? In a viral video, the koala walks confidently up to the door of an Australian accountant’s office, then right under a desk inside the office, like he knows exactly where he’s going. “S/he seemed to be on a bit of a mission, and wasn't heading towards any of the nearby trees, so I escorted the fuzzy traveller across the road and down the street,” Harriet Shing, a member of parliament, told ABC Online. Ruthie the Comfort Dog Will Be Honored With ASPCA's Dog of the Year Award

November 15, 2016 at 11:40PM by
>br> Ruthie, a Golden Retriever who’s one of the Lutheran Church Charities’ K9 Comfort Dogs, is headed to New York City today. This time, instead of traveling to help others, she’ll be recognized for her hard work. Ruthie has helped victims cope after many devastating events around the country, including the Orlando nightclub shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing and the police officer shootings in Dallas. But her biggest contribution may have been the six weeks she spent in Newtown, Connecticut, following the December 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. On Thursday, the family of an animal-loving young victim of that shooting, Catherine Violet Hubbard, will present Ruthie and her handlers with the ASPCA’s Dog of the Year Award at the annual Humane Awards Luncheon. — Read it at Today

Sea Otter Pups Get a New Home

Two sea otters who were found alone as infants in freezing Alaskan waters now have a permanent home at the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada. The pups were just a few weeks old when they were rescued by the Alaska SeaLife Center. They were deemed non-releasable by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services because they never learned basic survival skills from their mom. The aquarium is asking the public to weigh in on the pups’ names. The choices for the male are Mak, Fritz or Paxson, all references to areas in Alaska. The choices for the female pup are Kalluk, which means thunder; Tutka, the name of a bay in Alaska; or Kunik, meaning kiss. Voting ends on Wednesday. — See photos at Zooborns

Kitten Pulled From Sewer Pipe

A drenched black kitten was saved from a tight spot in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday night. A Good Samaritan arrived at an Aurora Fire Station Friday night to ask for help rescuing a kitten who was stuck about 8 feet down a slippery PVC pipe. The firefighters worked with animal control and the water department to free the kitten. They used towels to make a rope to lower down into the pipe. The kitten used its tiny claws to grip the towel and so it could be pulled out. In a video of the incident, the kitten can be heard crying for help from deep underground. — Watch it at Colorado’s 9News

Stranded Cows Rescued After Earthquake

18-Year-Old Dog Gets Big Send-Off

When Mark Woods sadly decided the time had come to say goodbye to Walnut, his 18-year-old Whippet, he asked fellow dog owners and dog lovers to join him for Walnut’s final walk on a beach in Newquay, England. His Facebook post about the celebration of his dog’s long life went viral, and hundreds arrived at the beach to see the elderly dog off on Saturday. “He has had an incredible life and having reached the grand age of 18 is ready for his final sleep,” Woods wrote. He later posted that Walnut had died, surrounded by his family and their three other Whippets, Monty, Nelson and Charlie. “I also want to thank the wonderful people of Newquay for their support which I will never forget as long as I live,” he said. — Read it at the Huffington Post

Real Navy Seal Dies at National Zoo

The world’s oldest gray seal, Selkie, passed away recently at age 43 at the National Zoo in Washington. Selkie trained with the U.S. Navy when she was just a 6-month-old pup, during the Cold War. With her natural ability to dive 1,000 feet below the water’s surface and stay underwater for 20 minutes, she learned how to insert and remove military equipment, turn wheel valves and use a screwdriver. Polar Bear Twins Born in Ohio

Twin polar bear cubs were born at the Columbus Zoo on Tuesday to first-time mom Anana. So far, they appear to be strong and well cared for, but the animal care team continues to monitor their activity using remote cameras. Polar bears have one of the lowest reproductive rates of any mammal, and the survival rate for a polar bear cub during its first few weeks of life is only about 50 percent. “Our hope is Anana will raise her cubs but our team, who now have experience with the difficult process of rearing a tiny cub, are prepared to step in if necessary,” said the zoo’s president and CEO, Tom Stalf. Last year, they hand-reared Nora, a cub whose mom failed to care for her on her own. Nora’s mom is Anana’s twin sister. — Read it from the Columbus Zoo
