Team Saves Cat From Tower

Firefighters and a technical rescue team worked together to get a cat who was stuck at the top of an 85-foot water tower down safely on Wednesday. The cat somehow climbed the tower in La Salle, Colorado, on Saturday and became trapped. His cries for help could be heard from the ground, and a crowd gathered to watch the crew climb to his rescue. Two firefighters reached the top, and the crowd cheered as they got the cat into a carrier. The carrier was then carefully lowered to the ground. The small black cat was taken to a veterinarian for an exam. He didn’t have a collar or microchip to identify an owner, so he may soon be up for adoption. — Read it at Colorado’s Greeley Tribune

Coyote and Badger Spotted Hunting Together

Amazing new photos from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show a friendship that might surprise you: a coyote and badger palling around together on a Colorado prairie. But these two species are actually known to hunt for prairie dogs and squirrels together, and they are often more successful when they work in tandem. The coyote can chase the prey if it runs, and the badger can dig to get it if it goes underground. The pair that was photographed together was hanging out around the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center. — See photos from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Study: Tadpoles Go Vegetarian During Heat Waves

A new study of three frog species finds that when they were exposed to mock heat waves in a laboratory, they preferred more plant-based meals. The researchers believe this is because the frogs can process plants more quickly. “Vegetarian diets are easily assimilated by animals under warm conditions — much easier than protein-rich animal diets,” said study co-author Germán Orizaola of Sweden’s Uppsala University. The study was published in the journal Ecology. — Read it at Live Science

“Bachelor” Stars Mourn Their Dog

Sean and Catherine Lowe, who married after meeting on “The Bachelor” in 2013, sadly revealed on Instagram Tuesday that their beloved dog Lola had passed away. “Today we said goodbye to the best dog there ever was. Easily one of the toughest 'grown up decisions' we've ever had to make. For the past couple of months I've been carrying her around the house and helping her use the bathroom because she had lost the ability to walk and stand due to a genetic disease," Sean Lowe wrote. He said they had wanted Lola to meet their baby, which she did. Their first child, Samuel, was born in July. “We're both crying like babies but we know we made the right choice for her. We'll see you when we get there sweet Lola,” he wrote. — Read it at ABC News

Duchess Meets Feline Star on Red Carpet

The star of A Street Cat Named Bob — Bob himself — got an ear scratch from none other than Kate Middleton, the Dutchess of Cambrige, at his movie’s London premiere on Thursday night. Based on a best-selling book, the movie is about how Bob, a stray, helped change the life of a homeless addict. Middleton is a patron of the charity Action on Addiction, which supports recovering addicts. While cameras flashed on the red carpet for the duchess, Bob himself appeared rather nonchalant about his audience with royalty. — See photos at USA Today
