Happy Reunions After Wildfires

Many happy reunions have been happening at animal shelters in eastern Tennessee in the aftermath of the wildfires that killed at least 13 people and destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses. The pets were lost in the chaos of the fast-moving fires. Some people weren’t at home when the fires reached their homes, or weren’t allowed to go back to try to save their pets — and some scared pets ran away as the flames came close. “This is a community that’s suffering from a great loss right now, so we’re just doing everything we can to help,” said Michaela Sorey, Sevier Humane Society shelter manager. Study: Female Lemurs With Color Vision Help Group

A new study of a group of sifaka lemurs native to Madagascar finds that the few females who have normal color vision can provide an advantage for their entire group. They are more likely to lead their groups when foraging, and are better able to feed themselves and their babies. The females with color vision and the groups they lived with showed higher body mass indices in the dry seasons. Groups living with females who could see color had a higher consumption of fruit, likely due to the lemur’s ability to spot it and lead her group to it, researchers said. 7 "Bond Beagles” Saved From Lab

A group of seven Beagles rescued from laboratory research in Hungary are now in the U.K. and living in foster homes. The pups have lived their entire lives in a lab, but they’re now free to play. They’ve been dubbed the 7 Bond Beagles by the Beagle Freedom Project “because it takes superior skill and expertise to be able to get them out of the laboratories so that they can ‘LIVE Another Day,’” the group said on Facebook Tuesday. Formerly known only by the numbers tattooed on their ears, the dogs have been named for the actors who’ve played James Bond: Daniel, Connery, Brosnan, Roger, Dalton, George and Niven. Firefighters Save Dogs From Ice

Colorado Springs firefighters came to the rescue of two big dogs who wandered out onto a frozen lake at a park, and broke through into the frigid water below. They were struggling to stay above the water when rescuers arrived. With the dogs safely in their arms, the firefighters were slowly pulled back to the shore. Luckily, crews responded quickly enough that the dogs weren’t harmed in the incident. — Watch it at People Pets

Dog Saved From Collapsed Building

Two days after a building collapsed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, emergency crews safely pulled a trapped Beagle from the wreckage on Sunday. The 100-year-old building was undergoing renovations when it fell on Friday, killing a construction worker. The search and rescue crew found Molly after hearing faint barking. She was found under a mattress, and it took them about 20 minutes to remove the debris around her. Molly belongs to 22-year-old Emily Fodness, who was injured in the collapse and released from the hospital that same day. Her two other dogs, a Husky and another Beagle, were also saved after the collapse. Molly was gently passed to Fodness’ emotional family, who had her examined and treated by animal control. — See photos at the New York Daily News
