Kitten Causes Traffic Jam
A little kitten caused a big commotion during morning rush hour on a highway in Wellington, New Zealand, on Friday. “When we arrived there were five cars stopped in the fast lane, which was causing significant traffic jams,” said Sergeant Bruce Cook, who responded to the scene with another officer. “Our first thought was 'oh no, the kitten's caused a crash'. But fortunately it hadn't.” Instead, the backup was caused by Good Samaritans who had stopped to try to help the kitten. The police were able to charm him out of hiding after he took a liking to Cook. The kitten had no identification and the veterinarian believed it was a stray, so Cook decided to adopt him and surprise his three children when they got home from school that afternoon. There’s bittersweet news for the cat-loving conductor of a Canadian freight train who made headlines this week when he saved the life of a cat he found frozen under the engine of his train. Brian Slater was contacted Tuesday morning by a couple from Saskatchewan whose missing cat Tiger matches the description of the cat Slater rescued. Slater, who fell in love with the kitty he named Q for the train, said at first he wanted to “keep denying” that Q seemed to be Tiger, but that he’s “happy either way because I know he'll be taken care of." Amazingly, Henry, an 8-year-old Retriever, is now healthy and happy after enduring terrible neglect. Back in June, he was found abandoned on a beach in Newport, California, with an enormous 42-pound tumor on his side. “Most vets that we’ve asked, and have been involved in his story, have never seen [a tumor] that big,” Newport Beach animal control supervisor Valerie Schomburg said at the time. In a press conference on Wednesday, police charged the woman they believe to be Henry’s former owner, Sherri Haughton, with several misdemeanors related to her handling of her dog. Adorable Tiger Cub Plays With Mom
A critically endangered Malaysian tiger cub delighted visitors at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo with her debut this week, as she scampered around her exhibit and wrestled with her mom. Named Bersi, which means plump, the cub was born to mom Bzui on Sept. 11. Her keepers say that since she doesn’t have any siblings to compete for mom’s milk, Bersi is larger than usual, weighing 5.85 pounds. “She likes to jump into the water, loves to tear up palm fronds and sneak up on mom,” zoo staff said. The keepers at the Cincinnati Zoo love cheese, and when they thought about the large variety cheeses there are, they decided to have some fun in coming up with names for a litter of 11 African Painted Dog pups. Born to mom Imara and dad Kwasi in October, the two boys have been named Nacho and Muenster, and their sisters are Bleu, Brie, Gouda, Queso, Colby, Swiss, Cojita, Mozzarella and Feta.
