K9 Bids Partner Farewell
Hundreds of police officers and their K9s arrived at Ford Field in Detroit on Wednesday to pay their respects to Wayne State University Police Officer Collin Rose — including his own partner, Wolverine. Rose, 29, was shot and killed while on patrol near the campus last week. Wolverine and his other dog, Clyde, were in his patrol vehicle at the time. Wolverine had often worked at Ford Field with Rose on game days as part of the stadium’s security team. The loyal dog is now in the care of Officer Andy Grimm, who brought him to the service. Wolverine tried to pull away from Grimm as they approached his partner’s casket. “He didn't even want to walk up to the casket so I tried to goad him up there and once I got him, he wouldn't face it so I just held him,” Grimm said. Wolverine stood with Grimm at a distance from the casket. Crews in Jacksonville, Florida, spent seven hours digging up a city street and sawing the end of a pipe in order to rescue a manatee who was stuck in a storm drain. A woman working with a street crew spotted the trapped manatee at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and called to report it to Florida Fish and Wildlife. The 9-foot marine animal was finally lifted from the hole in the street at about 3 p.m. The manatee had scrapes and bruises from being stuck in the 36-inch pipe. During a match between Australian soccer teams Sydney FC and Melbourne City, a hero goalkeeper came to the rescue of a seagull. The ball struck the bird on the pitch, and keeper Danny Vukovic signaled to officials to stop the play when he noticed the seagull was in trouble. He carefully picked up the bird and brought it to safety on the sideline, where a member of the training staff treated it. Soldier Reunited With Lost Dog
A video that tugs at the heartstrings shows the sweet reunion between U.S. Army Sgt. Dahlberg and her lost dog, Ginger. Ginger ran away several weeks ago, and Dahlberg and her daughter had searched all over for her. Finally, the soldier spotted Ginger on the website for the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento. Ginger contracted parvovirus when she was out on the streets, but has been treated for it and is expected to make a full recovery. When Dahlberg arrived to pick Ginger up this week, the relieved dog buried her head in her owner’s chest and whined. A Santa Cruz police officer has an adorable new pal to share the holidays with. Officer Gomez heard a “desperate meowing” coming from a car in the police department’s parking lot on Monday.
