Dramatic Rescue in Baton Rouge

An amazing video captures the rescue of a woman and her dog from their convertible moments before it sank into floodwaters in Baton Rouge. The footage, which was aired by local station WAFB on Saturday, shows several men in a boat pulling up to the submerged car and breaking through the fabric roof as the woman inside can be heard saying, “Oh my God, I’m drowning.” One of the men pulls the woman out just as the car goes underwater, and the panicked woman says her dog is still inside. The man who saved her dives underwater one more time, and witnesses can be heard gasping as he comes back up with the trapped dog. At least three people have died and thousands have been rescued amid historic flooding in Louisiana in recent days. — Watch it at the Huffington Post

Five Kittens Found in a Shoebox

A Good Samaritan in northern Virginia was taking out his trash when he heard tiny meows coming from inside a shoebox that had been thrown in the dumpster. He took them in and cared for them for a couple of days while researching where to take them, and decided the best place was the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. The staff there says the kittens are healthy and are “all very friendly.” The 5-week-old “Shoebox Kittens” are getting their vaccinations and will be in foster care for a few more weeks before they’re available for adoption. — See photos from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter via Facebook

New Snake Species Found in Mexico

A new earth snake with striking orange and black bands has been found in the mountains of Puebla and Veracruz in Mexico. The burrowing reptile has seldom been encountered, and was poorly studied because of that. This is the fourth snake species the researchers who found it have discovered in the last 14 years. "Most of these snakes have notably small geographic ranges and sometimes are only found in one type of vegetation. This makes them particularly vulnerable to the destruction of their habitat. It is important to know them before it gets too late," the scientists wrote. The new snake is described in the journal ZooKeys. — Read it at Science Daily

Injured Police Dog Recovering

K9 Kina of the Greenwood Police in Arkansas is expected to make a full recovery after being shot twice during a gunfight that killed a corporal from the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday. Kina was in her handler’s vehicle and wearing a bulletproof vest when she was shot, and she then took off. Crews used ATVs and helicopters to search for her, and she was found Friday morning in a resident’s fenced-in backyard, about two miles from the scene of the shooting. She raced to her handler, Cpl. Dennis Wisner, when he called her name. Kina is being treated at Cornerstone Veterinary Clinic, which has been overwhelmed with calls from people wanting to donate to the costs of her care. — Read it at Arkansas’ 5 News

Adorable Cat Deemed Largest in NYC

People from all over the country have fallen in love with Samson, a huge Maine Coon cat who lives in New York City. At 4 years old, the “gentle giant” is 4 feet long and 28 pounds. But he’s not overweight — he’s just large. "Very sweet, tender but a tough guy. He likes to wrestle and play but secretly enjoys being tender as long as nobody is watching. He is a ladies man who loves females much more than men, except for his daddy who he loves very much,” said Samson’s owner, Splurt Zillionz. — See photos at The Dodo
