Basset Returned to Her Owner
A New Jersey police officer went out of his way to help a Basset Hound named Bella. The dog was traveling in New Jersey with one of her South Carolina owners last month when the man had a medical emergency. Wall Township Officer Frank Kuhl responded to the scene and Bella was taken to a local shelter, where she was put on hold for a week. After the week was up, Bella’s co-owner was back in South Carolina but unable to travel to New Jersey to get Bella, and the owner she was traveling with was still getting medical attention. “It pulled on my heartstrings a little bit,” Kuhl said. “I have two dogs at home, and I got a vibe that this guy feels the same way about dogs that I do.” So, the caring officer brought Bella home with him for two weeks and then, with the company of another officer, drove the dog 650 miles home to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. — Read it at CBS New YorkNewly Discovered Bird Already Extinct
A newly recognized species of a colorful songbird in the Galápagos Islands hasn’t been seen since 1987 — making it the first modern extinction of a Galápagos bird. Scientists used museum specimens to determine that two subspecies of Vermilion Flycatchers should be elevated to full species status. It’s the smaller of the two species, the Cristóbal Island Vermilion Flycatcher, that’s believed to be extinct. "A species of bird that may be extinct in the Galápagos is a big deal," says study Jack Dumbacher. "This marks an important landmark for conservation in the Galápagos, and a call to arms to understand why these birds have declined." Three individual Arabian sand cats were photographed by camera traps in the United Arab Emirates last year, and the images have been published in a new study. The images mark the first time the rare and secretive animal has been seen in 10 years. Sand cats live in the desert in parts of Asia and North Africa. The animals, which look similar to domestic cats, are losing habitat and food sources, and are being studied so a “suitable protected area” can be created. Rare Lion Cub Triplets Make Debut
Three endangered — and adorable — Asiatic lion cubs made their public debut at the Cotswold Wildlife Park in England this week. The female cubs, Kali, Sita and Sonika, were born on May 25 to mom Kanha and dad Rana. This week, they met their dad for the first time, and the new pride ventured into their outdoor enclosure. Olivia Sievers, a flight attendant for Lufthansa, often travels to Argentina from Germany for work. Earlier this year, while she was staying in Buenos Aires for 6 months, she struck up a friendship with a stray dog who she stopped to feed and pet. He began following her back to her hotel. Sievers tried to find him a family, and thought that when she went back to Germany for work, he would give up on her. But every time she returned to Buenos Aires, Rubio was right there waiting for her. Finally, Sievers gave in and realized they belonged together.
