Owner Reunited With Long-Lost Cat

Smelly the cat disappeared from his Orlando, Florida, home eight long years ago, when he was 8 years old. At the time, he was one of three cats and a dog in Kathleen Critchon’s home. Since then, her other pets have passed away, and she now has three little boys — who were thrilled to meet Smelly last week after Critchon got a call saying her cat had been found. Critchon made the two-hour drive to Gainesville, where Smelly was found on a street and brought to a vet by a Good Samaritan. “If only he could tell his story. I want to know how he got to Gainesville. Did he trek there over the last eight years? Did someone pick him up and move to Gainesville with him?” Crichton asked. She hopes Smelly was taken care of, but says he’s doing well. Despite his advanced age, Smelly is just as feisty as the day he wandered off, said Critchon. — Watch it at Orlando’s WFTV

Researchers Find Great White Shark Nursery

For the first time, a team of researchers has found a great white shark nursery in the waters of the North Atlantic. “We have just been totally overwhelmed by the abundance here and the volume of sharks we're seeing,” Ocearch researcher Chris Fischer said of the area off Long Island, New York. The group was able to tag nine baby great whites. Among them were two young females, who they named Montauk (for a nearby town) and Gratitude. The tags should allow the scientists to track the sharks for about a decade. — Read it at Discovery News

Puppy Survives More Than 400 Bee Stings

A veterinarian in Arizona says a newly adopted 18-month-old puppy is lucky to be alive after being attacked by bees outside his home last week. On Aug. 20, owner Jeremy DeNoyer let his dogs, Lady and Tramp, outside into his yard. “My smallest dog, Tramp, was yelping,” DeNoyer said. “I figured he just wanted to come inside. And when I saw him, I opened up the curtains and [saw] he was just swarmed by hundreds of bees.” DeNoyer tried to rescue Tramp, but was stung 20 times himself. He called firefighters for help, and they were able to spray foam on DeNoyer’s home and the vacant home next door where the hive was located. Tramp had suffered more than 400 stings. “With as many stings as he had, he had more than enough to kill 50 percent of dogs his size,” said Dr. Cynthia Jones. Amazingly, though, Tramp responded to treatment, and on Thursday he got to go home, where he’s continuing to recover. — Read it at People Pets

Zac Efron Says “Best Friend” Died

Last week, actor Zac Efron shared the sad news that his dog, Puppy, had passed away. “Through thick and thin you've always been my best friend. I'll see you at the finish line, RIP Puppy Efron,” he wrote on Instagram on Thursday, when he shared a sweet photo of himself getting a lick from his beloved dog. He also included lyrics from Chance the Rapper’s song, “Finish Line.” “Felt hog tied ever since my dog died / He lived to 84, damn, that's a long ride / I know he up there he just sit and he wait / I'll be racing up the stairs Imma get to the gate singing.” The 28-year-old announced in April 2012 that he’d adopted the Australian Shepherd the previous Christmas. He also has two other dogs, named Chappelle and Dreamer. — Read it at US Weekly

Rare Tree Kangaroo Emerges From Pouch

An 8-month-old, endangered male Goodfellow’s Tree kangaroo is finally out of his mom’s pouch and exploring at Australia’s Perth Zoo. The baby was named Mian for a province in Papua New Guinea, which is the species’ native home. Mian’s keepers were able to keep a careful eye on his development while he was still in mom Kaluli’s pouch because they trained her to have her pouch checked. They used a small camera to peer inside and see milestones like when his toenails developed and when his fur first grew. The information they learned is expected to be helpful in managing the species. — See photos at Zooborns
