Puppy Rescued From Ocean

Clare Shaw and her family were afraid they’d never see Ryder again. They were boating off the coast of Connecticut on Sunday when the 8-month-old Shiba Inu slipped out of his harness and fell into the ocean. “After turning around and back tracking for hours, having the coast guard involved, and everyone on shore looking we weren’t able to find our puppy who we thought didn’t know how to swim,” Shaw said. But she posted Ryder’s photo on Facebook just in case. People starting sharing it, and before long, an equine vet spotted the same dog’s photo posted in the Groton Lost and Found Pets Facebook group. “They had found him swimming in the middle of the sound and pulled him into their boat,” Shaw said. “We are so incredibly thankful!” The family was reunited with Ryder later Sunday night. — Read it at Connecticut’s Fox 61

Crews Work to Save Entangled Whale

NOAA Fisheries and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department are working together to save a blue whale who got entangled in crab lines off the California coast. The 70-to-80-foot creature was spotted on Monday afternoon, and appeared to be dragging 200 feet of line and several buoys from its tail as it swam unusually close to the shoreline. By nightfall, though, the endangered whale dove out of sight, reported ABC News. Efforts to locate and disentangle the whale are expected to continue today. — Read it at CNN

Cat Evicted From Texas Library

Fur is flying in White Settlement City, Texas, after the city council voted 2-1 to evict a beloved cat from library where he’s been a fixture for the last six years. City councilman Elzie Clements claimed that the library was “no place for animals.” But Mayor Ron White, who doesn’t have a council vote, is not happy with the situation. He accused the council of evicting Browser out of retaliation. “We've had that cat five years, and there's never been a question,” White told The Fort Worth Star Telegram. “That cat doesn't have anything to do with whether somebody can have their puppy at City Hall. That cat doesn't hurt anybody ... The council just went out and did this on their own because they don't like cats.” The dissenting city councilman has asked the council to reconsider the ban at their next meeting. — Read it at Yahoo News

Cat Rescued by Home Inspector

A homeless grumpy-cat lookalike got lucky during a home inspection at an empty house in Bradenton, Florida, last week. The skinny cat surprised Paul Tateosian, a real estate agent’s assistant, when he walked behind the house to look at the roof. He saw the cat, who he thought looked like Garfield, glaring at him. But despite the sour look on the cat’s face, Tateosian said the cat was “really happy to see us.” Home inspector Jason Burnside was also drawn to the friendly kitten. He took her home and got her cleaned up. He plans to take her to the vet and get her checked for a microchip. But if they can’t find Girdy’s owner, Burnside’s mother plans to adopt her. — Read it at ABC News

Litter of 16 Pups Ready for Adoption

You might remember the story of the 16 puppies born to shelter dog Maggie, a Pointer mix, just in time for Mother’s Day. Well, those healthy puppies will be available for adoption in time for the 4th of July this weekend through SPCA Suncoast in Tampa, Florida. The 10 boys and six girls have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and now they’re ready for good homes. The adoption event is taking place at a local car dealership, and the business will pay half the adoption fee for the first 10 puppies. And there’s happy news for Maggie: the shelter announced last night that the “sweet mom” has found her forever home, too! — Read it at Tampa Bay’s ABC Action News
