Dogs Complete Incredible Feats

They dove from docks, raced through hurdles, leapt to catch Frisbees and hit the waves on surfboards, all during this month’s Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge and Surf Dog event in Huntington Beach, California. Talented dogs from across the country showed off for judges including former Olympic beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor. There were lots of winners, and the highlights included Ziggy, an American Eskimo Dog from California who won the Small Dog Surf Event for the third year in a row, and Saphira, a Belgian Malinois, also from California, who set a new world record for the Fetch It event with a whopping 25’6” jump.

Men Honored for Saving Cat From Fire

The U.K.’s RSPCA honored Richard Price, 21, and Daryl Webb, 32, on Saturday for rushing into a burning house to save a woman and her 17-year-old cat. The two were driving in Wales when they saw flames coming from Kathryn Hayler’s home. Price called for help while Webb dashed inside. They found Hayler in the front room and evacuated her, and put out the fire that was spreading from the curtains. That’s when they saw her scared cat, Marmalade, cowering in the corner of the smoke-filled room. “If they hadn't managed to put the fire out I dread to think what would have happened to him,” Hayler said. “I'm so grateful to them for saving Marmalade.” — Read it from the U.K.’s South Wales Evening Post

Newborn Kittens Rescued From Dumpster

Six tiny kittens are safe at the Sacramento SPCA after an “eagle-eyed waste management worker” found them and brought them in for help. It’s unclear how they wound up in the dumpster, but they’re now being bottle fed at home by two of the shelter’s veterinary technicians, Kari and Tammy. They’re just days old now, but they’ll be available for adoption when they’re about two months old, the SPCA said on Tuesday. “So many thanks to the waste management worker who has a heart and did the right thing,” said one Facebook commenter. — See photos from the Sacramento SPCA via Facebook

Dog Saved From Trash Gets Home

Those kittens aren’t the only pets who were saved from the trash recently. A 6-pound Chihuahua is adjusting to life in a loving new home after an employee at the Montgomery County, Maryland, recycling plant found him in the back of a trash compactor truck last week. Luckily for the pooch, named Packer, the ride lead to a new home with the employee, Mark Wheeler, and his wife. “Sometimes, the word recycling takes on a whole new meaning!” said the Maryland Environmental Service in a Facebook post. “Our thanks to employee Mark Wheeler for not only taking care of the dog at the facility, but also adopting him as part of his family.” — Read it at People Pets

Police Dogs Ecstatic to See Handler

After two weeks of leave, North Yorkshire, England, police officer Marc Richardson returned to pick up his police dogs — and Dutch and Bailey were thrilled to see him. The larger of the two dogs leapt right into Richardson’s arms, in an adorable moment caught on video and later shared on the police department’s Facebook page. The dog then smothered Richardson with kisses while the smaller dog raced around, barely able to contain his joy. — Watch it at Today
