Adorable Breed Recognized by AKC

The American Kennel Club is welcoming a cute new face to the Herding group: the Pumi. The energetic dog is “amusing and fun-loving.” The Pumi originated in Hungary, where he was bred to herd sheep and cattle. The quick learner is extremely willing to work and sports hair that forms corkscrew curls all over the body. The breed will be officially recognized on July 1. To become an official AKC breed, there must be a minimum number of registrations distributed geographically across the U.S. “This lively, adorable dog makes a wonderful companion for a family willing to provide lots of exercise and mental activity,” said AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo in a news release. — Read more from the AKC and get to know the Pumi in our breed guide

Study: Bears Use Humans as Bodyguards for Cubs

A new study finds that clever mother brown bears have figured out they can sometimes use unwitting humans as shields to protect their cubs from males who are not their father. The researchers found that moms with cubs were seeking to settle closer to more populated areas — and their plan worked. Those mothers greatly increased their cubs’ chance of survival. “Successful mothers were more likely to use humans as protective associates, whereas unsuccessful mothers avoided humans,” the researchers wrote. The study was published in the journal Science Advances. — Read it from Discovery News via Seeker

Pets Take Sides on Brexit

As Britain heads to the polls today to vote on whether to remain a member of the European Union, cats and dogs have drawn their battle lines on Twitter. Thousands of cat owners who want Britain to remain in the E.U. posted photos of their cats looking depressed or irritated, with the hashtag #CatsAgainstBrexit. That quickly led to #DogsAgainstBrexit, and the opposition, #CatsForBrexit and #DogsForBrexit. At least on Twitter, the cats opposed to leaving the bloc are winning by a large margin. We’ll see if they’re a bellwether for the humans when the results come in for the historic vote. — Read it at The New York Times
