Hero Dog Barks for Help
Mack’s owner knew something was wrong when the usually mellow black Labrador Retriever started barking uncontrollably in his Iowa backyard last month. When David Scott went to check on his dog, he discovered his neighbor, Marcia Allen had collapsed in her backyard because she was suffering from a stroke. She couldn’t yell for help, so Mack did it for her. “It was crazy. He barked so long and so loud. It was kind of a frantic bark, he knew something was wrong,” Allen said last week. “He had that sixth sense that something wasn't right.” Scott called 911, and after a few days in the hospital, Allen is recovering well — and giving Mack lots of love. “Mack the hero, he's a wonderful dog. Grandad, an Australia lungfish, died Sunday after spending 84 years at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. The Shedd says 104 million visitors got the chance to see Grandad over the years. His health began to decline last week, and he stopped eating, which resulted in signs of organ failure. “For a fish who spent much of his time imitating a fallen log, he sparked curiosity, excitement and wonder among guests of all ages who would hear his story and learn about the incredible biology that makes his species a living fossil and one of the oldest living vertebrate genera on the planet,” said Shedd President and CEO Bridget Coughlin, Ph.D. Grandad was one of two lungfishes acquired from the Taronga Zoo and Aquarium in Sydney, Australia, in 1933. — Read it at MLiveBison Airlifted to Canadian National Park
Sixteen wild bison have been reintroduced to Banff National Park in southwestern Canada for the first time in a century. The bison, including two pregnant 2-year-olds, were airlifted from another Canadian park to try to strengthen the population. They traveled about 275 miles in custom-made shipping containers in trucks, then the containers were lifted by a helicopter and flown to an enclosed pasture within the park, where they were released. Cat Revived With Firefighter’s Mask
Firefighters in the Netherlands rescued an unconscious tabby cat from a burning apartment building. They immediately wrapped one of the firefighter’s oxygen masks around his face and started giving him chest compressions. Finally, Sammy gave a meow and started breathing again on his own. Stan Loemers, Sammy’s owner, lost everything in the blaze but was ecstatic his cat’s life was saved. “Even if my house may have burned down three times, this animal means the world to me,” he said. Sammy was treated at an animal hospital and released a few days after the fire. Anyone who’s tried to find a home to rent with pets knows they’re likely to face lots of restrictions, including size and breed limitations for dogs. So, Jade Rouzeau made headlines this week because she’ll only rent her remodeled Florida home to families with big dogs — and they get extra points if they’re Pit Bulls. “People who contact us about our rental are often in disbelief, thinking that our requirement is too good to be true,” she said.
