Sweet Moment Caught on Video

Prissy, a 4-year-old Hound mix, was transported to New Hampshire after she was found abandoned in a junkyard in Tennessee along with her three puppies. Last week, Prissy was spayed at the Conway Area Humane Society, and staffer Chrissy Ireland knew the dog would have a tough time as she came out of anesthesia. So, Ireland decided to comfort her by curling up beside her in her kennel — without knowing her coworker was capturing her kindness on camera. “I saw [Prissy] and she was all shaky and she didn't feel good,” Ireland said. “It made me feel so sad for her. So I just found myself laying on the floor with her and kissing her and loving her.” The video went viral on the shelter’s Facebook page, and the staff is hoping it will help get Prissy adopted. — Watch it at ABC News

New Venomous Snake Discovered in Costa Rica

An international team of scientists has solved a mystery and identified a new species of venomous snake that had been mistaken for another species for 100 years. The black and green Talamancan Palm-Pitviper lives in the most remote regions of Costa Rica. It shares its striking coloring with its close relative, the Black-Speckled Palm-Pitviper. The two species look almost identical but are genetically different. The study was published in the journal Zootaxa. — Read it at Phys.org

2,000-Year-Old Dog Graveyard Found in Siberia

The remains of five dogs were found carefully buried in a 2,000-year-old graveyard near the Arctic Circle, archaeologists said. The discovery reveals close relationships between the region’s people and their dogs even at that time. The dogs had various jobs in the ancient village, including pulling sleds, researchers said. The remains of two sleds and a carved bone knife handle thought to depict a sled dog in a harness were also found at the site. The remains of more than 115 dogs were actually found at the Ust-Polui site, but just five of them were found carefully buried in a group near the edge of the site, indicating the close bonds between some people and some dogs in the village, the researchers said. — Read it at Discovery News via Seeker

Puppy Saved From Trash Can

An adorable 2-month-old Labrador Retriever mix puppy now has a happy new home after an animal control officer in Tennessee found her abandoned in an empty trash can outside the Springfield Animal Shelter last week. “When I looked in the trash can, she was inside, just looking up at me like, ‘Help me; save me,’” the officer, Zoraida Luna, told The Tennessean last week. “So, I picked her up and brought her in the shelter, gave her a bath and some food and water. She was really happy after that.” Then, Luna shared photos of the puppy on Facebook. Immediately, offers to adopt her started pouring in. By the next day, the puppy had a new family. The new owner posted a photo on the shelter’s Facebook page of the pup being held by a young girl who looked thrilled to have her. — See photos from Springfield Animal Control via Facebook

Fennec Fox Mom Surprises Keepers With Kits

Keepers at Poland’s Zoo Wroclaw thought its fennec fox was expecting one kit — so they were in for a treat when she trotted out of her burrow with a litter of three following her earlier this month. The zoo reports that the triplets are doing well, and they’re keeping their caretakers entertained with their antics. — See photos at Zooborns
