Comfort Dogs Help Dallas Grieve

Six K9 Comfort Dogs traveled to Dallas on Monday to help a city grieving after five police officers were shot and killed on Thursday night. President Obama and Vice President Biden also arrive in the city today to offer their condolences. Just one month ago, 12 of the Golden Retrievers, who are part of the Lutheran Church Charities ministry based in Illinois, went to Orlando after the tragic shootings at the Pulse nightclub left 49 people dead. The group was invited to Dallas by a local church after Thursday’s attack. Comfort Dogs Phoebe and Pax are based in Texas, and Katie, Luther, Ruthie and Rufus traveled from Oklahoma, Illinois and Nebraska. The dogs and their handlers attended a candlelight vigil at City Hall last night, and will spent time with the police, the slain officers’ families and other members of the community to help them start to heal. — Read it at the Dallas Morning News and follow the dogs on Facebook

Study: Monkeys Have Used Rocks as Tools for 700 Years

Archaeologists in Brazil have found evidence that capuchin monkeys have used stones to smash open the shells of their favorite cashew nuts and seeds for more than 700 years. The monkeys pass their tool knowledge down from one generation to the next, and the researchers observed the younger monkeys learning from the older ones. They’d use heavy hammer stones on heavier anvil stones to open the nuts near the base of a cashew tree, then leave the stones in a pile, where other monkeys would find and use them. British Prime Minister David Cameron will resign his position Wednesday, making way for Theresa May to assume the post and move into the prime minister’s famed 10 Downing Street address in London. But Cameron’s cabinet has confirmed that Larry, the chief mouser at the residence, will keep his job. The “civil servant” tabby was adopted for his predatory skills in 2011, but he’s long been rumored to be less than stellar at the job. Still, he’s hoping to make a good impression on his new boss. “Does anyone know a good cat groomer available tomorrow? I need to make a good impression on someone on Wednesday …” read a Tweet from an account set up under Larry’s name. Senior Dog Found by Loggers

Rocky, a 17-year-old Shepherd mix who suffers from cancer, is back home in New Hampshire thanks to loggers, a local animal shelter and social media. The elderly dog ran away from his home after being spooked by fireworks on the Fourth of July. Three days later, loggers saw him deep in the woods near the state’s border with Maine, struggling to walk and looking confused. With the help of the Conway Area Humane Society, they took an ATV into the woods and found him. One rescuer carried the gentle dog out of the woods to safety. The shelter shared a video of the rescue on Facebook, and word soon reached his owners, who had been desperately searching for Rocky. Baby Elephant Splashes in Kiddie Pool

A video from the Dallas Zoo is bringing smiles to the grieving city and beyond. The zoo’s 2-month-old elephant got some relief from the heat with his first dip in a kiddie pool. He’s a little bigger than your average toddler, though, so he adorably struggled to get his four legs into the water. “This beloved boy is definitely a water baby,” the YouTube caption reads. “As he grows, so will his inflatable pool.
