Rescued Puppy Recovering

Kaitlin Kouts and Tiffany Revay found a lot more than they were expecting when they headed out to play Pokémon Go in Texas last week. Millions of people across the country have been playing the virtual scavenger hunt game on their smart phones. While Kouts and Revay were searching for virtual creatures to add to their collections, they discovered a real live puppy who needed help. The 4-month-old puppy was lying by a tree and “looked like he was in pain,” Kouts said. In another lucky twist, they got a call from someone who could help. The man delivering a pizza they’d ordered was looking for them. When they explained what happened, he said he was an EMT. He treated the pup, calmed him down and got him to a local vet, where he’s waiting for surgery on two broken legs. Kouts and Revay named the puppy Pokey. A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise money for the treatment, and he will be fostered once he’s ready. — Watch it at Texas’ KXXV

4 Dogs Get Top Military Honors

Matty, a Czech German Shepherd; Fieldy, a black Labrador Retriever; Bond, a Belgian Malinois; and Isky, a German Shepherd, were honored for their military service on Capitol Hill Tuesday. The four canines, who’d all served in Afghanistan, were given the inaugural American Humane Lois Pope LIFE K-9 Medal of Courage by the American Humane Association. They saved lives with their ability to sniff out explosives and guarded officials visiting the troops. One of them, Isky, now works as a service dog helping his handler cope with PTSD. “Today, military dogs are more important than ever in keeping our service men and women safe,” said American Humane President Robin Ganzert. — Read it at ABC News

Sheep Help Take Photos for Google Maps

Tired of waiting for Google Street View to map their roads, the residents of the remote Faroe Islands decided to take matters into their own hands. They set up their own mapping project, fitting five island sheep with 360-degree cameras to capture images for Sheep View 360 as they walk and graze on the island. The islander who built the harnesses for the sheep uploads the pictures to Google Street View. The 18 rocky, volcanic islands are located between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean. — Read it at the U.K.’s Guardian

Country Singer Mourns Beloved Dog

A heartbroken country singer shared a beautiful photo of his 15-year-old dog, Jake, on Instagram Sunday, after the dog passed away. Dierks Bentley wrote the song “Can’t Be Replaced” about Jake. The tribute to his Shepherd mix appears on his most recent album, Black. “For 15 years, right by my side / From a single man to three kids and a wife / Friends come and go, but when it comes to Jake / There's just some things that can't be replaced,” he sings in the final verse. Bentley was known to being Jake to red carpet events. The dog had battled cancer over the last year of his life. — Read it at People Pets

Monkey’s Birth Surprises Keepers

Last month, when keepers at the Zoo de Granby in Canada arrived for their morning rounds, they were surprised to find a female Japanese Macaque baby in the exhibit. Unfortunately, their first clue of the newborn's presence was hearing her screeches. Her mom had abandoned and rejected her, so the staff quickly rescued her and put her in an incubator. Kimi is now 4 weeks old and has gotten lots of TLC from her keepers. She’ll stay off exhibit until she’s ready to join her troop. — See photos at Zooborns
