Adorable Rhino Born in Iowa

A critically endangered Eastern black rhino was born on Oct. 11 to mom Ayana and dad Kiano at the Blank Park Zoo in Iowa. The baby girl weighed 80 pounds at birth. She’s healthy — and never lets her mom out of her sight. “It’s so great that the baby is a female, because the black rhino population tends to be skewed toward male,” said Susie Ellis, executive director of the non-profit International Rhino Foundation. The Eastern black rhino is endangered due to poaching of their horns, and there are believed to be fewer than 1,000 left in the wild. — Watch it at the Des Moines Register

Dog and Cat Pair Romeo and Juliet Need Each Other

Romeo the cat and Juliet the Miniature Schnauzer were found huddled under a car together in San Diego. A Good Samaritan brought the duo to the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, where they “immediately showed they didn't want to be separated, and they physically tried to stay together,” said shelter administrator Amanda Mills. The shelter normally separates dogs and cats, but these two were “lovesick” without each other. “Romeo got kind of sick, pretty depressed. He wasn't eating well, and he was lethargic and didn't want to play. Even his coat and fur weren't in good condition,” Mills said. So, the staff made special accommodations to put them together. “As soon as Romeo saw Juliet again, he just perked right up. The cat finally started playing and eating again.” The shelter is now trying to find a home for the bonded pair together. — Watch it at Virginia’s 13 News Now

Stray Kitten Interrupts the News

A homeless kitten wandered onto the set of a live morning show broadcast on Turkish television recently, surprising host Kudret Çelebioğlu. The kitten hopped right up on the news desk and walked toward the host’s computer. Çelebioğlu took the opportunity to encourage his viewers to adopt homeless cats. “As you know, winter is coming and cold weather is passing through,” he said. “It's an unexpected guest, [but] we should cuddle him. We should open the doors to stray cats and give them water and food [...] We all should take care of them somehow.” Çelebioğlu and his coworkers fed the kitten and gave him a warm place to sleep — and one studio employee decided to give him a permanent home. — Watch it at The Dodo

Service Dog Gets Caricature Drawn

A photo of an adorable service dog in training posing for a caricature at Disneyland has gone viral. A pair of visitors who happened upon the cute scene snapped a photo of the attentive dog and sent it to their daughter, who shared it on Twitter, where it got lots of attention. It turns out that the pooch, whose name is Yahoo, is actually in training to be a service dog with the non-profit Canine Companions for Independence. CCI says that the trip to the busy California theme park was part of Yahoo’s training, designed to make sure he could be attentive and calm in a distracting environment. It looks like he passed that test! — Read it at the Huffington Post
