Party Turns Rescue Mission

Groom-to-be Mitchel Craddock and his buddies were on a 5-day bachelor getaway in Tennessee when someone crashed the party. They were cooking bacon one morning when a friendly but skittish dog showed up at the door, but wouldn’t come inside. The guys named her Annie for little orphan Annie, and after seeing her around for a few days and feeding her, they noticed she was protecting an area in the woods. They investigated and discovered that Annie had seven well-fed puppies who were about 5 or 6 weeks old in a den. "We were proud of her," Craddock said. "She gave everything she had to those puppies." Annie and her pups — Brimmie, Rosie, Daisy, Knox, Gunner, Bear and Finn — were all adopted by the groom and his groomsmen or their relatives, and they live within a 5-mile radius of each other. — Read it at Michigan’s MLive

Veteran Sues Airline for Rejecting Service Dog

Former Capt. Lisa McCombs, who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, is suing American Airlines for exacerbating her post-traumatic stress by repeatedly refusing to allow her service dog to fly home to Mississippi with her from a Kansas airport. McCombs and her lawyer wouldn’t comment on the pending litigation, but a 35-page legal brief details how McCombs says the airline staff wouldn’t let her through security on Sunday or Monday with her chocolate Labrador Retriever, Jake, despite providing the required forms of documentation. She says American Airlines eventually came through with a flight for her, but humiliated her during her travels. "We appreciate and thank Ms. McCombs for her service to our country," an American Airlines spokesman told the Army Times. — Read it at the Army Times

11 Endangered Pups Emerge From Den

A big litter of African wild dog pups has ventured out of their den at Australia’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The 11 rare pups are the second litter born to mom Kimanda and dad Guban on August 25. African wild dogs can have litters of up to 18 pups. “Kimanda is being a very attentive and nurturing mother,” said keeper Genevieve Peel. The pups’ older siblings are pitching in to help, too, bringing them food and babysitting. “The pups are now nine weeks old and continue to grow in confidence,” Peel said recently. The pups and the rest of their pack now spend most of their days out on exhibit. — See photos at Zooborns

Lost Cat and Owner Reunited

A tuxedo cat who’d been missing for more than 10 years is back home with his owner in Calgary after being identified by a faded tattoo on his ear. Owner Krista Sylvester was amazed to hear that Phoenix had been found, and was reunited with him on Thursday. “I was a little bit shocked … I never thought I’d see him again,” Sylvester said. Phoenix was found on the streets but appeared to have been cared for and was well fed. Sylvester believes someone else may have taken Phoenix in for the last 10 years. Although she’s happy to have him back, she said she’d be willing to work something out with them if they recognize him and contact her. — Watch it at Canada’s Global News
