Officer Adopts Dog She Rescued

A Pit Bull who was found starving in January wiggled her whole body and smiled broadly at a press conference this week where the West Pennsylvania Humane Society announced she will go home with one of the officers who rescued her. Effie, 4, weighed just 14 pounds when Pittsburgh Police Officer Christine Luffey and a humane officer found her in an apartment. In February, Luffey arrested the dog’s owner, who was later convicted of animal cruelty. Effie immediately bonded with her rescuer, even licking Luffey as she sat in her lap on the car ride to the shelter. She spent eight months recovering there, and is now healthy at 40 pounds. “Effie will never be lonely or hungry again,” said Luffey’s 12-year-old daughter, Katrina. — Read it at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Choking Goldfish Rushed to the Vet

Conquer the 1-year-old goldfish survived a close call thanks to a very caring owner. Last week, the fish accidentally ate a pebble from his tank, and it got stuck in his tiny mouth. His owner, Emma Marsh, rushed Conquer to an exotic vet near her home in Brisbane, Australia. “[Conquer] was making excessive mouth movements trying to dislodge it,” said Marsh, 21. “If we did nothing, he would have starved to death.” Instead, she paid about $375 for doctors to sedate the 2-inch fish and remove the .4-inch pebble. Cats Take Over London Subway Station

Commuters in London were greeted by a herd of cats at South London’s Clapham Common tube station on Monday morning. The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service (CATS) replaced all the ads in the station with pictures of adoptable cats. The 68 images will stay up in the station for two weeks. Baby Ape Snuggles With Mom

A critically endangered Bornean orangutan was born Monday at Washington’s National Zoo. The baby boy was born to mom Batang and dad Kyle, who are both 19 years old. The newborn has been clinging closely to his mom, and keepers have seen her nursing him. Her keepers had spent the last three years preparing Batang for motherhood — teaching her to hold a baby upright and present it to her keepers, so that the staff will be able to retrieve the infant if it’s medically necessary. This is the first birth of a Bornean orangutan at the zoo in 25 years. — Read it from the National Zoo

Firefighters Rescue 18-Year-Old Cat From Blaze

A family in Duluth, Minnesota, is relieved and grateful that their elderly cat, Mazzy, was scooped up and saved by firefighters in a fire that destroyed their home. Shirley Reierson and her husband, Jim Gruba, were sleeping Thursday night when a neighbor called to tell them about a garage fire next door. They evacuated with their 8-year-old cat Jack, but their 18-year-old cat and their pet cockatiel didn’t make it out with them. They told the firefighters about their pets when they arrived. An hour later, the bird was rescued, and half an hour after that, a firefighter carried Mazzy outside. “That someone would take so much time to make sure that our old beloved cat was OK was really something.
