Rescuers Save Dog From Drowning

A dog who fell down a 30-foot hole in an abandoned nuclear power plant is alive thanks to a construction worker who heard his desperate barking on Tuesday. Matt Mountie was installing solar panels at the Tennessee plant when he heard the dog and found him struggling to keep his head above water at the bottom of the hole in the ground. He called for help, and five agencies responded. Hawkins County Humane Society workers tried to comfort the dog as rescuers worked to reach him. He was losing his battle to stay above water, and they pulled him out just in time. The rescuers named the dog Timmy in reference to the classic TV show Lassie, where the Collie supposedly saved the little boy, Timmy, from a well. Milestone for Rare Condor in California Park

For the first time in 125 years, a critically endangered California condor hatched at Pinnacles National Park has survived long enough to fly out of her nest on the path to adulthood. Other chicks hatched at the park haven’t survived long enough to get to that stage. “She is staying near the nest, doing lots of practice flights,” said Rachel Wolstenholme, condor program manager at Pinnacles. “Her parents will help her learn how to fly and where to feed and how to interact with the other wild birds out there.” Scientists consider the chick to be a big success as they work to bring the species back from the brink of extinction. London Zoo Gorilla Recaptured After Escape

Kumbuka, a Western lowland silverback, escaped his enclosure into the secure keepers’ area at the London Zoo on Thursday evening. Officials say the gorilla was never in a public area and visitors were not in danger. Visitors in a zoo café were locked inside until the animal was tranquilized and recaptured within two hours. “We're happy to report that he's up and grumbling, and interacting with the rest of his family in his gorilla kingdom,” said Malcolm Fitzpatrick, the zoo’s curator of mammals. “I understand he will be given his favorite treats a bit later on.” He said the escape had been a “minor incident.” — Read it at the U.K.’s BBC News

Elephants Rescued From China Water Tank

Rescuers in China went all-out to save a baby elephant and two adults from a water tank where they were trapped for two days. It’s believed that the calf fell in and the adults became trapped when they tried to help. More than a dozen wild elephants surrounded the tank, trying to use their trunks to pull their companions out. The rescuers used helicopters to keep the rest of the herd away from the area while a digger took down one wall of the tank, giving them a way to escape on Tuesday afternoon. — Read it at Seeker

Boy Gets the Dog He Needs

The dream 8-year-old Aiden Heath worked so hard to achieve has come true. This week, he finally met his diabetes alert dog, a chocolate Labrador Retriever named Angel. Aiden and his family learned about the assistance dogs four years ago, when he was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The specially trained dogs can detect low blood sugar 20 to 30 minutes before a blood meter can, and they can cost about $15,000. Aiden started saving pennies right away, and he had collected about $6,000 when his story made national headlines in April. Almost overnight, more than $20,000 was donated from across the U.S. to cover the cost of the dog. On Tuesday, Angel arrived in Vermont from Nevada, where she’d been training since April. "Aiden is over the moon," said his mom, Jenni Heath. Orphaned Bobcat Kittens Form a Family

Three bobcat kittens have come together to make their own little family at a sanctuary in Minnesota. Autumn lost her family after they were hit by a car. She was taken in by the Wildcat Sanctuary, which started searching for other bobcats in need of a home to give her company. They found two orphaned bobcat brothers in Arizona just a few months older than Autumn. The pair moved to the Minnesota sanctuary, where they’ve become best buddies with Autumn. “We’ve already seen Autumn come out of her shell. What used to be a scared little bobcat kitten, afraid of humans, is now romping through the grass after her new brothers,” said sanctuary director Tammy Thies. “And our hearts melted the first time we saw them all napping in a pile together.  If they couldn’t grow up wild, this is the next best thing.” — Read it at Minnesota’s Fox 9

Injured Pup Taken in After Storm

A North Carolina family came to the rescue of a young Labrador Retriever they found badly limping along a road destroyed by Hurricane Matthew. They picked the dog up and brought him to a veterinarian, who said he had several severe wounds to his leg and foot. The vet said the pup, who the Eads family named Matthew, would need several expensive surgeries. The Eads set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Matthew’s treatment, but Carolina’s Veterinary Medical Hospital volunteered to do it for free. The Eads family has kept the fund open, however, to help other animals injured in the storm. — Read it at People Pets

Adorable Baby Elephant Gets a Name

A joyful 5-month-old Asian elephant in Singapore has been named Neha, which means love in Hindi. This sweet baby girl’s favorite pastime is climbing a muddy hill at Night Safari and then sliding down, so she’s covered in an orange sheen. Neha has so much fun that the adult females in her herd have started to join her in the game. Her keepers say she’s started to try bananas as her first solid food, although milk from her mom, Chawang, still makes up most of her diet. Horse Saved From Floodwaters

Rescue crews in North Carolina fought a current to wade through waist-deep water left by Hurricane Matthew to reach a horse trapped in his pen on Sunday. The rescuers hooked their life vests up to each other before leaving their Zodiac to try to get to Bob, the 6-year-old horse. They then fastened the horse to their vests and made their way through even deeper waters before they reached higher ground. Bob is “doing pretty darn good” despite his ordeal, said Jennifer Hutchinson-Tracy, the shelter manager of Cumberland County Animal Control, reported ABC News. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had an easy life, and his owners can no longer keep him. Police K9 Recovering After 30-Foot Fall

Mattis, a police dog in Alpharetta, Georgia, had to go through emergency surgery after unknowingly leaping off a 30-foot wall while chasing two suspects on Saturday. The K9 suffered a lacerated liver and internal bleeding, but pulled through and, though it will be a long road to recovery, is expected to be fine. The suspects, who allegedly stole dozens of cell phones and credit cards, were apprehended. Video Captures Chimp Moms Teaching Tool Use

For the first time, video cameras have recorded evidence of wild chimpanzee moms teaching their offspring to use tools. “We found that mother chimpanzees in the Goualougo Triangle teach by transferring termite-fishing probes to their offspring,” said study author Stephanie Musgrave of Washington University in St. Louis. “In this population, chimpanzees select specific herb species to make their fishing probes, and they produce probes that have a particular brush-tipped design. Lost Utah Cat Crosses Mountains to Return to Family

In May, Brandon Fitton dropped his boat off for repair in Salt Lake City, about 35 miles from his Mountain Green, Utah, home. He didn’t realize that his family’s cat, Mittens, had stowed away under the cover, and when mechanics pulled it back, he jumped out and took off. Last month, he showed up in the driveway of a Park City, Utah, resident, who fed him, gave him TLC and brought him to her vet. There, they discovered Mittens’ microchip, and he was happily reunited with the Fitton family. Based on Mittens’ condition, the veterinarian believed the cat had walked the 32 miles from Salt Lake to Park City, crossing several mountains on his trek. “I’ll bet that Mittens would have found his way back home without our help.
