Firefighters Rescue Dog From Cliff

A small dog was out for a walk with her owners at Dedication Point in Idaho on Sunday when she jumped over a waist-high wall and fell 20 to 30 feet onto a rock shelf. Kuna Fire Department Captain TJ Lawrence was the first to scale down the wall to get to the dog, who wasn’t thrilled to see him. “The dog let me know right away we weren't best friends yet so I had to take my time and gain her confidence that I wasn't there to hurt her," he said. He covered her with his coat to keep her warm until Boise Fire Department arrived to assist. They lowered a stokes basket to lift the dog to safety. Her owners took her straight to the veterinarian, who said the dog will need surgery for her injuries, but is expected to be OK. — Read it at Idaho’s KTVB

High Court Hears Arguments in Service Dog Case

The eight justices on the Supreme Court heard arguments Monday in the case of Fry Vs. Napoleon Community Schools, which centers on whether a girl with cerebral palsy who was prevented from bringing her service dog to school could sue the school district for emotional damages. Ehlena Fry’s doctor prescribed the service dog when she was 5 years old to help her become more independent. Fry is now 12, and her Goldendoodle, Wonder, is semi-retired. Wonder and three other service dogs had clearance to go into the Supreme Court for the arguments but waited outside the building. The court is expected to issue its decision on the case in June. — Read it at U.S. News

Cat Trapped in New Construction

Building contractors tore down a newly built pillar outside of a home under construction in Idaho after they heard a cat’s cries coming from inside it. The builders said the cat was likely trapped in the pillar for nearly two weeks. “Hi little kitty! We came to save you. Don’t be scared,” one of the workers can be heard telling the cat in a video of the rescue. “The builder was completely unaware that there was a cat hiding within the walls before enclosing the pillar and we were all happy to see it run free, towards its home!” read the description of a video posted on YouTube in late September. — Read it from UPI

Puppy Bowl Ref Judges Cute Costumes

The big competition is still three months away, but the referee with the best job in television is always ready to give points for cuteness. Puppy Bowl ref Dan Schachner, who’s already getting everyone psyched up for the big game, stopped by People Now to give his professional opinion on some adorable adoptable pets in costume. One of the favorites wasn’t a puppy at all, but a mama dog who’d just finishing nursing two litters — her own, and a second litter who needed help. Confessions: What Our Readers Have Given Up for Their Dogs

Dogs are man’s best friend for a reason: Many dogs would do anything for us, and, in turn, we bet a lot of you would do anything for your dogs. In some cases, that means making sacrifices to your homes, travel plans and daily routines so your furry friends will be happier and healthier.

We wanted to know, what have you given up for your dog? We posed this question to our Facebook fans, and here’s how they responded. 

Furniture

Many of our Facebook fans said they gave up their beds, couches and other furniture for their dogs. Reader Anna Gardner says, “I gave up having a beautiful bed. It's more comforting to have my dogs sleep with me.” To take it one step further, Janee Hodges wrote on Facebook that she buys her furniture and vehicles based on the comfort of her dogs.

But reader Ev Woyak’s response might take the cake: “Our entire house belongs to [my dog]. She just allows us to live here (as long as we don't take up too much room in the bed).”

Travel

Owning a dog sometimes forces you to adapt your method of traveling, but many of our Facebook fans wouldn’t have it any other way. Reader Linda Jenkins says that after she retired 11 years ago and got a Yorkie, she gave up airplane travel. Instead, she goes on road trips and has seen more of the United States than she ever has before. She says it’s a “win-win with a little girl who makes us laugh every day.”

When Facebook fan Jill Gibbs’ dog got too old to get in her pickup truck, she bought a minivan. And Nicky Butler didn’t let the expense of transporting her pets from Kenya stop her from bringing them with her. “I went broke to make sure all my furry ones could come back from Kenya with me when I had to leave. [I would] rather be financially broke than emotionally!”

Daily Routine

If you’re a dog parent, you know that many times your dog’s wants and needs conflict with your schedule. Reader Jule Schweighoefer says she’s given up her mornings to get her “picky monster” to eat. Wendy Tatum Prillaman works from home and avoids going anywhere dogs aren't allowed so she doesn’t have to be away from her dog, Ben, who has separation anxiety.  

Similarly, Maryse Acriviadis also doesn’t like to be apart from her dog. She says she’s given up holidays for her pup: “Can't leave my dog for more than a couple of days!” Reader Terry Rigsby says she gave up her freedom for her dog, but the sacrifice seems to have been worth it. “[I]t's a small price to pay,” says Rigsby. “When I was sick and homebound for months and months she was by my side and helped take care of me. So I owe her big time.”

As dog lovers, we think this quote from reader Helen Louise Seward perfectly sums up the sacrifices we make for our dogs: “My life revolves around my dogs. That's all I need to say.”

When a little Adelie penguin at SeaWorld Orlando began to lose feathers recently, the park’s wardrobe department stepped in to help. Penguins have short, broad feathers that keep water away from their skin and insulate them from the cold. But sometimes they experience feather loss, even in the wild, leaving them susceptible to the elements. Lucky for Wonder Twin, the wardrobe department whipped up an adorable solution: her own wetsuit. And this new costume isn’t just for Halloween! Lost Cat Flown Home in Private Jet

Ninja the cat was on a cross-country road trip with her family from Florida to Colorado over the summer when she escaped from her crate and disappeared during an overnight stop in Wichita, Kansas. The 10-year-old kitty started living with a colony of feral cats, and the volunteer who regularly feeds the cats noticed Ninja’s unusually friendly nature. A rescue group picked him up months later, and discovered he had a microchip. They called his family, and an anonymous company offered to fly Ninja three hours home from Kansas to Florida on a private jet. Boy Surprised by Pack of Sled Dogs

Ian Dustan, 10, suffers from an incurable condition called mitochondrial disease, which has contributed to organ failure and the debilitation of his neurological system. Ian has outlived doctors’ expectations, and a nonprofit rescue group helped his family arrange a special experience for him on Saturday. His favorite type of dog is a Husky, so with the help of the volunteer group Forever Husky, he got a visit from a pack of rescue sled dogs. Ian even got a ride around his grandparents’ yard thanks to the dogs, who he was thrilled to see. “It's something I know will mean a lot to him,” said Jaime Miceli, Ian's mother. — Read it at the Chicago Tribune

U.K. Cat Named the World’s Longest

Kelsey Gill knew her Maine Coon would be a big cat. But even when Ludo was just a kitten, Gill noticed he was the same size as Maine Coons who were much older than he was. Now, he’s been given the Guinness World Record title as the longest domestic cat alive. The feline, who lives in the U.K., measures 3 feet, 10.6 inches long. Gill says one of the benefits of having a big cat is that she can always find him. Despite his huge size, Ludo is still 5 centimeters smaller than the longest cat ever, Stewie, a Maine Coon who passed away in 2013. — Read it from Guinness World Records

Elephants Get Giant Pumpkins to Smash

Zoo animals want treats for Halloween, too! On Friday, the elephants at the Oregon Zoo got the chance to smash two pumpkins that were the right size for them. Lily and the rest of the pachyderm family pulverized two gigantic pumpkins grown by the Pacific Northwest Giant Vegetable Growers Club. They used their trunks and their feet to “squish the squash,” with one elephant even lying down on the huge gourds. — Watch it from the Oregon Zoo via Facebook
