Black Lab Falls Over a Cliff
Sheila, a 70-pound black Labrador Retriever, fell over an abrupt drop-off while walking in Pt. Defiance Park in Tacoma, Washington, with her owner on Saturday night. A team of volunteers with the Washington State Animal Response Team arrived on the scene shortly before dark, and tried to get a lay of the land to figure out how to find and get to the dog. Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Peters and another volunteer rappelled down over the edge that Sheila had fallen from, and found her at 2 a.m. on an outcropping just big enough for her to sit on, with her legs braced in front of her. They believe she’d been in that position since her fall at 6 p.m. The rescuers carried dog up another nearby trail. Sheila was exhausted and dehydrated, but very happy to see her owner. — Read it and see photos from WASART via FacebookDogs Crash Car Into Walmart
Customers who saw a car drive right into the side of a Walmart in West Virginia on Friday were shocked when they saw who was at the wheel: two small dogs. An elderly woman had left them in the car with it running while she went inside, so they wouldn’t suffer in the heat. She never expected the pair to knock the car into gear and roll into the building. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident and the woman was able to drive the car home. “We definitely don't want you to leave your pet in a car if it's not running, and apparently if the car is running, that's not a good idea either,” said Amanda Clark, who owns a vet service across the street from the Walmart. — Watch it at West Virginia’s WSAZStudy: Breeding Has Damaged Bulldog’s Immune System
Researchers say aggressive breeding to adjust the appearance of the English Bulldog has disrupted the breed’s immune system, making it harder for them to fight off illness. In addition, there isn’t enough genetic diversity in the breed to reduce this higher risk of illness, the researchers said. The genetic changes were particularly rapid over the last few decades. The study was published in the journal Canine Genetics and Epidemiology. — Read it at Health DayImage: Komodo the kitten
Kitten Found With Komodo Dragon
Tiny kittens and Komodo dragons aren’t exactly a good mix. But a stray kitten who wandered into the large lizard’s enclosure at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas was found Saturday without a scratch. She was taken to the Humane Society of North Texas, where she was named Komodo. “This feisty little girl was luckily unharmed. She is quite a survivor!” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. The kitten is in foster care until she’s big enough to be adopted. — Read it at the Dallas NewsPhotographers Foster Kittens
When professional photographers foster a new mama cat and her litter of kittens, we all win. A very pregnant 9-month-old cat arrived at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter in Virginia, and she was sent right off to stay with Photographers for Animals, who named her Canon, after the camera brand. Not long after she settled in, Canon gave birth to five cute kittens. “There has probably never been a more photographed litter of kittens, and these guys got used to the camera at a very young age,” the shelter said in a Facebook post with a sampling of some of their charming photos. Now, they are ready to go off to their own families, and they’ll be available for adoption on Thursday. — See photos from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter via FacebookOriginal From:http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/pet-scoop-dog-found-on-cliff-in-the-dark-stray-kitten-saved-from-zoo-exhibit?WT.mc_id=RSSFeed
