Firefighter Adopts Puppy He Rescued

February 09, 2017 at 10:23PM by
>br> A delighted puppy was adopted last week by the Sacramento firefighter who found her sick and tied to a fence in the rain in October. Mike Thawley and his crew brought Chunk to the Front Street Animal Shelter for help. She’d lost almost all her fur to mange, and it took several months of treatment for her to become healthy again. But despite her ordeal, she was always happy to see her firefighter hero when he stopped by to visit her. Once she was ready, Thawley brought Chunk home to foster her, and the rest of his family fell in love with her, too. Now, she’s officially a member of the Thawley family — and a sweet video from the day she was adopted shows how excited she is about that. — Read it at Sacramento’s ABC 10

Critically Endangered Cubs Born

Much of the attention at the Cincinnati Zoo recently has been on its prematurely born hippo, Fiona. But the zoo had another exciting arrival last week. A trio of rare Malayan tiger cubs was born Friday to 3-year-old mom Cinta. Unfortunately, the first-time mom’s maternal instincts didn’t kick in quickly enough, and veterinarians concerned about the cubs’ dropping body temperatures without mom’s warmth decided to remove them from their den. “Nursery staff is keeping them warm and feeding them every three hours,” said Mike Dulaney, curator of mammals. Malayan tigers are critically endangered, with only about 500 left in the wild. — Read it at the Cincinnati Zoo

Upside-Down Horse Rescued From Creek

Rescue workers in California came to the aid of a 13-year-old horse who wandered away from his stable during a cleaning, slipped down a steep hill and found himself stuck upside-down in a creek bed on Tuesday. “He was kind of belly-up and in a tough position,” said Capt. Marty Driscoll of the Orange County Fire Authority. Animal control sedated Honor while firefighters used chainsaws to clear the brush that was trapping him in place, and he was eventually able to get up and walk away on his own. He was reunited with his owner. — Read it at UPI

Homeless Cat Found Stuck in Pool

Scuba earned her name the hard way. The friendly cat was found at the bottom of an old, empty swimming pool behind a sports department store in Arizona last week, huddled in a corner and trying to avoid the foot of water at the bottom. “It was clear that she had been down there for some time and she was curled up in the corner, soaking wet, shaking and hungry,” said Andy Gallo, an Arizona Humane Society emergency animal medical technician who said he could hear her heartbreaking cries from the gate. “Despite her situation, she is the sweetest girl and will make someone a very loving pet.” After recovering at a local animal hospital, Scuba will be up for adoption today. — Read it at People Pets

Firefighters Use Oxygen Mask to Revive Cat

February 08, 2017 at 10:21PM by
>br> Firefighters in the Netherlands rescued an unconscious tabby cat from a burning apartment building. They immediately wrapped one of the firefighter’s oxygen masks around his face and started giving him chest compressions. Finally, Sammy gave a meow and started breathing again on his own. Stan Loemers, Sammy’s owner, lost everything in the blaze but was ecstatic his cat’s life was saved. “Even if my house may have burned down three times, this animal means the world to me,” he said. Sammy was treated at an animal hospital and released a few days after the fire. The incident took place last year but video footage from body cameras worn by the firefighters was only recently released. — Read it at People Pets

Hero Dog Barks for Help

Mack’s owner knew something was wrong when the usually mellow black Labrador Retriever started barking uncontrollably in his Iowa backyard last month. When David Scott went to check on his dog, he discovered his neighbor, Marcia Allen had collapsed in her backyard because she was suffering from a stroke. She couldn’t yell for help, so Mack did it for her. “It was crazy. He barked so long and so loud. It was kind of a frantic bark, he knew something was wrong,” Allen said last week. “He had that sixth sense that something wasn't right.” Scott called 911, and after a few days in the hospital, Allen is recovering well — and giving Mack lots of love. “Mack the hero, he's a wonderful dog. It was just amazing what he did,” she said. — Read it from AKC

World’s Oldest Aquarium Fish Dies

Grandad, an Australia lungfish, died Sunday after spending 84 years at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. The Shedd says 104 million visitors got the chance to see Grandad over the years. His health began to decline last week, and he stopped eating, which resulted in signs of organ failure. “For a fish who spent much of his time imitating a fallen log, he sparked curiosity, excitement and wonder among guests of all ages who would hear his story and learn about the incredible biology that makes his species a living fossil and one of the oldest living vertebrate genera on the planet,” said Shedd President and CEO Bridget Coughlin, Ph.D. Grandad was one of two lungfishes acquired from the Taronga Zoo and Aquarium in Sydney, Australia, in 1933. — Read it at MLive

Bison Airlifted to Canadian National Park

Sixteen wild bison have been reintroduced to Banff National Park in southwestern Canada for the first time in a century. The bison, including two pregnant 2-year-olds, were airlifted from another Canadian park to try to strengthen the population. They traveled about 275 miles in custom-made shipping containers in trucks, then the containers were lifted by a helicopter and flown to an enclosed pasture within the park, where they were released. They’ll be monitored for 16 months by park rangers before being relocated to the eastern slopes of the park. — Read it at Yahoo

“Large Dogs a Must!” at This Rental

Anyone who’s tried to find a home to rent with pets knows they’re likely to face lots of restrictions, including size and breed limitations for dogs. So, Jade Rouzeau made headlines this week because she’ll only rent her remodeled Florida home to families with big dogs — and they get extra points if they’re Pit Bulls. “People who contact us about our rental are often in disbelief, thinking that our requirement is too good to be true,” she said. It’s for real: Rouzeau is a dog rescuer who has two Pit Bulls herself and knows how challenging it can be to find housing that will allow them. “In addition to inquiries about renting the house, we get a flood of emails, texts and calls from people just thanking us for looking out for our fellow Pit Bull parents,” she said. — Read it at Today

Evanger's Dog Food Recalled After Dog's Death

One dog has died and at least five others have become ill after eating Evanger’s Hunk of Beef canned dog food. The company is recalling several lots of the food because one batch tested positive for the barbiturate Pentobarbital.

Evanger’s, which has been in business for 82 years and never had to recall its products, said the affected meat came from one supplier, and they’ve now terminated that relationship. Many dogs may have eaten the food and not had issues.

If your dog has consumed one of the affected lots and shows symptoms including drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance or nausea, you should get them to the veterinarian immediately. — Get recall details from People Pets

Anteater Gets Surrogate Teddy Bear

Keepers at the ZSL London Zoo are hand-rearing a 6-week-old giant anteater who was rejected by her mom shortly after her birth on Dec. 28. Anteater pups get around by clinging to their mom’s backs, so little Beanie now has two surrogates. Keeper Amy Heath walks around with the pup on her shoulder during the day, and she has a giant teddy bear she cuddles up to at night. “Hand-rearing an animal is an amazing privilege, but it’s hard work too; we’ve been bottle-feeding Beanie every two to three hours with special replacement milk and making sure she’s kept warm at night with a temperature-controlled incubator,” Heath said. Beanie will be reunited with her parents once she’s big enough. But for now, she’s quite content. “She’s a very strong youngster with a sweet personality; she loves to burrow her long snout into my neck for a cuddle!” Heath said. — See photos at Zooborns

Ancient Sheepdogs Reintroduced to Fend Off Wolves

An ancient breed of shepherd dog has been reintroduced to its native territory in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains to do the job it was originally bred to do: guard livestock from bears and wolves. The Carpathian shepherd dog has an innate devotion to the animals it’s guarding. A European Commission-backed organization has given eight of the puppies to shepherds at three locations and is training them in how to train the dogs so they can help revive the breed. — Read it at Seeker

Image: Ryker meets class

2nd Graders Meet Dog They Helped

A second grade class in Kansas got a surprise visit Friday from a shelter dog they helped last month. Ryker had a broken leg and needed surgery when he was abandoned and taken in by the Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka. When the Shawnee Heights Elementary School class heard about Ryker, they wanted to help. They went home and emptied their piggy banks, and came up with $450 to donate to the shelter — more than needed to cover the cost of Ryker’s surgery. Now that he’s recovered, Ryker made a visit to the class to thank the kids for their kindness. The kids were delighted to meet him in person. — Watch it at Indiana’s WTHR

Chocolate Lab Gives Birth to Green Puppy

Elaine Cooper and her husband were shocked when their chocolate Labrador Retriever, Milly, gave birth to a bright green puppy along with four yellow ones at their home in England. “The pup looked emerald green,” Cooper said. The puppy has been named Fifi after the green Princess Fiona from the movie “Shrek,” but she’s already started to lose her unusual coloring. The green tint was reportedly due to an overexposure of biliverdin, a substance found in the placenta. The color is expected to continue to fade over the next few weeks, and Fifi will then look more like her golden brothers, Gizmo, Ghost, Bear and Rover. — Watch it at Yahoo
