Viral Photo: Hiker Runs Into Hillary Clinton on Chappaqua Trail

November 11, 2016 at 10:47PM by
>br> Like many of us when we’re down, Hillary Clinton and her husband decided to take their dogs for a long walk in the woods on Thursday. An upset Clinton supporter, Margot Gerster, was also taking her young daughter for a hike to clear her mind — and that’s when she ran into the former Democratic presidential nominee. Gerster shared a photo on Facebook that showed her and her daughter posing with Clinton and one of her dogs on a trail near the Clintons’ Chappaqua, New York, home. Gerster said former President Bill Clinton took the photo, which has gone viral.  — Read it at CBS

Vet Given a Dog at Knicks Game

A decorated veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars was surprised and thrilled to be presented with a service dog at a New York Knicks game in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Army Retired Sergeant First Class Luciano Yulfo, who served for 36 years, was being honored in a ceremony during a break in the NBA game when Paws of War brought out Murphy, a Golden Retriever. Yulfo dropped his cane in his excitement and knelt down to greet his new dog. The veteran was injured on duty and has been on the waitlist to get a dog to help him for 18 months. Today is Veterans’ Day, and many professional sports organizations have been showing their appreciation. Earlier this week, we told you the story of another Army vet who was presented with a service dog at a New York Giants football game. — Read it at CBS New York

Study: Rats Giggle When Tickled

Humans aren’t the only ones who are ticklish. A new study finds that when rats are in a good mood, they emit ultrasonic giggles when tickled. Researchers determined which neurons in the brain were tied to ticklishness and laughter, so the findings suggest that future therapies for people with depression might target this brain region. “Rat tickling and tickling-evoked positive emotions in rats should be viewed as primitive forms of joy,” said study co-author Michael Brecht of Humboldt University in Germany. The study was published in the journal Science. — Read it at Seeker

Bald Eagle Rescued From Storm Drain

Traffic was shut down in Orange County, Florida, for 90 minutes during rush hour Thursday so authorities could save a female bald eagle from a storm drain. Witnesses say she and another bald eagle were fighting in the sky and when they fell to the ground, she dropped into the drain. A crowd cheered as the eagle was pulled to safety. She suffered a cracked beak as well as injuries to her leg and chest. Experts say the birds were likely battling over territory. The 5-year-old eagle is expected to recover in about six weeks, and will be released into the wild — but likely in a different area in the hopes that she can avoid conflict. — Read it at Florida’s WFTV

Pig Poses for Maternity Shoot

A potbelly pig who was rescued from an abandonment case in Indiana is now living in style at a sanctuary in Ohio. When Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary discovered Sophie was pregnant, they wanted to do something special for her. So, they called Enjoy the Ride Photography to do a photo shoot with the expectant mom. She sported a tutu and enjoyed some pig-friendly cupcakes for her big day. And she looked quite content, especially in one shot where she decided it was time for a nap. Sophie surprised her caretakers and gave birth to seven “perfect little piglets” this week. “All are happy and healthy and Sophie is proving to be a fantastic Mom,” the sanctuary posted on Facebook Tuesday. — See photos from the U.K.’s Metro

Viral Debate: Is This Animal a Cat or a Dog?

November 10, 2016 at 11:38PM by
>br> Perhaps in need of a distraction from election coverage, the Internet has a new debate: whether Atchoum looks like a cat or a dog. It turns out that the subject in the photos is a hairy Persian cat from Canada who’s become Internet famous. Atchoum, 2, was adopted by a groomer in Quebec and has a rare congenital condition called hypertricosis (also known as werewolf syndrome), which causes fast and continual hair growth. “Some people say my wild furs and intense amber eyes make me look like a dog, an owl, a mad scientist, a Gremlin, Lorax or the Grinch but I'm happy to be me,” Atchoum says on his web site. “I'm well cared for by a veterinarian who will monitor my health,” he noted. — See photos at the U.K.’s Telegraph

Rescued Puppy Has a New Job

A puppy who was saved from the rubble of the 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Norica, Italy, last month has a loving new home — with the firefighters who saved him. The Collie was reunited with his original owners after he was found, but later given back to the firefighters, who decided to train him as a fire service dog. They named him Terremoto, the Italian word for earthquake, and he’s making quite a splash already in his new gig. The animal rescue group Enpa Onlus has been sharing adorable photos of Terremoto on Twitter, including this one of him being “fussed” over as he gets a kiss from a visitor. — Read it at People Pets

Study: Birds Drawn to Smell of Plastic

A new study from the University of California, Davis, finds that albatrosses and other seabirds might be attracted to the small pieces of plastic they find in the ocean because it releases a smell similar to their prey. The birds naturally prey on krill, which have been found to give off the chemical dimethyl sulfide when it is eaten by a predator or breaks down in the ocean. The study finds that the chemical is also given off by tiny pieces of plastic, often because they’ve been colonized by algae that then dies or is eaten by other organisms. The study was published in the journal Science Advances. — Read it at The New York Times

Lost Dog Found After 10 Years

Lucky lived up to his name this week when he was reunited with his owner 10 years after he wandered away from his California home. The Maltese was only a puppy when he disappeared in 2006. Ventura County Animal Services believes Lucky was found and kept by the same owner for years without being checked for a microchip. It was discovered when the owner surrendered the dog to the shelter, possibly due to his age. But his original owner was thrilled to have him back after all those years. “Look how good he looks, that's amazing,” the owner said as Lucky was reunited with him and introduced to his 10-year-old son. The happy ending was streamed live on social media on Saturday. — Read it from NBC Los Angeles

Boaters Pull Pit Bull From River

Gypsy was in her Florida backyard when she apparently jumped off a sea wall Monday and swam for an estimated two miles before being rescued. Two workers in a tugboat on the New River spotted the 18-month-old Pit Bull struggling to get ashore. “There was a tree blocking her and then she couldn't get up a [sea] wall, so she finally realized she could come over to us,” said Ryan Little, one of the workers. “When she got close enough we picked her up.” With the help of social media, the boaters reunited Gypsy with her family that afternoon. “Holy moly, I can't believe that dog made that trek in the water,” said owner John Calia of his pup, whose legs are only about six inches long. “Absolutely crazy.” — Read it at Florida’s Sun Sentinel
