Injured Pups Help Each Other

Two dogs who were rescued after being hit by cars on the same day in two separate incidents in Arizona have become best buddies. Thor, a 4-month-old black Shepherd, was more severely injured, with two broken legs. The Animal Benefits Club of Arizona stepped up to get him help — and Petunia, a smaller white pup, was brought in with less severe injuries on the same day. They quickly became pals. “They act like the other dog is their whole reason for being,” said Andra Jeffress, the group’s executive director. “When one sees the other, their little faces light up and their tails start wagging ... Thor likes nothing better than to cuddle Petunia with his head and neck around her as if he is trying to let her know how much he loves her.” Petunia shows her love by giving her buddy kisses. Virginia Police Dog Recovering After Shooting

Authorities in Virginia have caught a suspect who allegedly shot a police dog who was pursing him. Police said they stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction on Sunday night. The driver was wanted on several felony warrants and was taken into custody without incident, but the passenger, Joseph Conway, fled the scene on foot. As an officer and K9 Dux chased him, police said Conway turned and fired a pistol, and struck Dux at least once. Dux was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment and is “resting comfortably” after surgery. He got to go home with his handler, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputy Kory Kelly, on Tuesday. Crowd Cheers for Released Sea Turtles

A group of Australian schoolchildren and their parents cheered as two sea turtles who’d each spent six months in rehabilitation at a turtle hospital headed back out to sea last week. Summer, a 15-to-20-year-old hybrid green and Hawksbill turtle, had been found with injuries from two fishing hooks lodged in her mouth. Sophie, a green turtle who’s between 10 and 15 years old, was found malnourished and lethargic when she was rescued. They recovered at the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium turtle hospital until they slowly made their way back out to their ocean home on Thursday. — Read it at Today

Kitten Focus Group Watches Debate

Who won the vice presidential debate Tuesday night? While cable news networks featured human focus groups watching Democrat Tim Kaine debate Republican Mike Pence to give them a sense of which candidate performed better, The Late Show with Steven Colbert had a much cuter idea: an all-kitten focus group. The panel of kittens was streamed live on Twitter and Facebook, with a screen featuring the debate in their pen. “Less than 30 seconds into the VP debate, one member of our focus group already tried to escape,” the Late Show said on Facebook. Later, more than half of the panel was “visibly napping,” while the undecided kittens hung out in the litter box. Kitten Saved From 12^th Story Ledge

A kitten in Singapore escaped from a window and got stuck on a ledge on the 12^th floor of the building. While police officers waited on the ground with an open blanket, a rescue officer from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty Animals Singapore used a long pole with an adjustable rope to capture the frightened kitten. The kitten grabbed ahold of the pole as it was gently pulled up to safety. The SPCA advised the building’s owner to ensure screens are in all of the windows so this situation could be avoided. — Read it at UPI

87-Year-Old Woman With Parkinson's Disease Gets Final Horse Ride

9 Puppies Born on Train

Passengers called for help and jumped into action when a stray dog climbed aboard a metro train in Moscow on Monday morning, ready to give birth. The new mom had nine puppies in a space the passengers made for her. “The whole [train] car was moved when she gave birth,” an eyewitness said. At the next stop, metro personnel asked the passengers to get off the train and wait for the next one while they brought the train to the depot to get help for the dog and her litter. The family is now living at the Zoorassvet animal shelter in Moscow, and they’re looking for people to adopt the puppies and their mom. — Read it at Russia’s RT

Study: Bonobos Can Crack Nuts With Tool

A new study finds that wild-born, rehabilitated bonobos can develop skills to crack nuts with a tool that are similar to that of wild chimpanzees. Bonobos rarely use even simple tools in the wild. This type of complex tool use hasn’t been documented in bonobos before. The study shows that bonobos have a greater diversity of manipulative ability than other primates, and select the most efficient hammer stones for cracking nuts. They were found to crack more nuts per minute than their chimpanzee cousins. The study was published in the American Journal of Primatology. — Read it at Science Daily

Endangered Frog Making a Comeback in Yosemite

The Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog, which is native to California, was on the brink of extinction. But the 3-inch frog is making an encouraging comeback in Yosemite National Park. Their numbers had a sharp decline when non-native trout that were stocked for fishing gobbled them up. Then, disease wiped the frogs out from 90 percent of their habitat. Efforts to save the frog have led to a sevenfold increase in their population in Yosemite in the last 20 years, new research finds. Patient Gets Wish to Ride Horse

Horses were Nelly Jacobs’ life. But she gave up riding 30 years ago, when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Rare Gorilla Born at Columbus Zoo

A critically endangered Western lowland gorilla was born at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio on Sept. 28 to dad Mac and mom Tabibu. Days later, keepers were able to determine that the baby, named JJ, is a boy. JJ is the first offspring for Mac, who’s from a family of famed gorillas born at the zoo. He and his brother were the first twin gorillas born in the Western hemisphere. And JJ’s great grandmother is Colo, the first gorilla born in human care, and the oldest gorilla on record. Panda Cub Tumbles From Table

Last week, China’s Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding showed off 23 of the adorable panda cubs who were born there this year. Staff members carried each of the baby pandas out to a makeshift stage so they could be photographed together. But it’s hard to keep an eye on that many cubs at once — and one curious little guy tumbled right over the edge of the stage. Luckily, keepers were quick to come to his rescue and he was OK. The cubs were between the ages of 1 and 4 months old, reported the U.K.’s Guardian. A total of 27 cubs were born at the base this year, twice the number reported by the staff there last year. Pandas were recently moved from the endangered species list to vulnerable status. — Read it at Today

Famed Frog Dies, Leading to Species’ Extinction

Known as Toughie, the last known Rabbs’ fringe tree-limbed frog died last week at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Toughie was believed to be at least 12 years old because he was already an adult when he was collected in 2005. He was one of many frogs rescued as scientists raced to beat the deadly chytrid fungus in Panama. He was named by his rescuer’s 2-year-old son, and it stuck and helped lead to his fame. — Read it at National Geographic

Animals Flock to Churches for Blessing

Dogs, cats, fish and even lizards arrived at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to be blessed by friars in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals. Scenes like it played out at many churches all over the world. The Blessing of the Animals traditionally takes place around Oct. 4, which is the feast day of Saint Francis. Officer Adopts Rescued Kitten

Police officers, firefighters and a plumber who happened to be passing by worked together for more than two hours last week to save a kitten who was stuck in a storm drain in California. A man passing by had heard the kitten’s cries and called for help. Authorities had been trying to call to coax the kitten from the drain when a Roto Rooter manager saw the commotion and stopped by with a sewer video inspection camera. “In the process of running the camera up there and moving it around, the cat just came out,” he said. The kitten was adopted by Officer Elen Calderon, who was the first to arrive to help her. She’s named her Stormy. — Read it at Alabama’s WIAT
